Not actually bourbon, but I swung by Kovel Distillery yesterday evening to buy an empty, slightly leaky 30-gallon barrel and picked up a bottle of their Lion's Pride Wheat Organic Whiskey.

Don't quite know what I'll do with the barrel, but it seemed like a fine opportunity to get a unique item at a nice price.

Really great bottle to have around for when you're in the mood for that after dinner desert pour.

Has anyone picked up a bottle of the OWA107 TPS bottling and have an opinion. I still haven't picked up a bottle of the NAS yet but just recently opened a 08 OWA107 7yr and was pretty impressed with it. I've read great things about the new NAS but was wondering if the TPS was possibly even better than the rest?

Jay at TPS is a great guy, but his palate and mine don't line up. I've had a number of his barrel selections including AAA 10 year and OWA 7 and I've preferred the off the rack versions each time.

Of course, YMMV.

Stopped in a new store today on a tip from a SB contact and was able to obtain Pappy 20, 15, and Lot B. 2010 Sazerac 18, Knob (1.75 for $38 and the new Early Times Bourbon to have a try....my liver was twitching with excitement.

Congrats Osacr, that's a hard one to come by and one of my favorite looking packages. Glad you got it without me having to part with mine for it to happen. :toast:

Picked up a bottle of PVW15 and PHC10 yesterday that the MI contingent so graciously "missed."

Got home not too long ago from my recent trip back home. Along with the above, I picked up bottles of:

PVW 20

WTKS

OWA

OGD114

A pretty good trip if I say so myself.

OWA

EWSB 96

EWSB 98

EW1783

Never tried the 1783 before. For some reason I always thought it was a step down from the black label, but some reading has convinced me otherwise.

I've always liked it more than the Black Label.

I tried to purchase some Wild Turkey 81.

But Mr Retailer said that the WT Rep said that the 81 would not be available for 2 months because they want to get rid of the 80 first.

In spite of it being listed in the MI LCC book today.

If 81 needs to mix in older barrels and presumably older barrels are in short supply, how do they drop the 80 product line? Is is just a Michigan thing?

Also, does being listed mean that retailers have an obligation to provide a product upon request? I'm not familiar with Michigan's rules.

No no not a MI thing at all.

WT 80 has always been younger than 101.

The new 81 is the same age as 101 but cut to 81.

...The new 81 is the same age as 101 but cut to 81.

That's the perplexing part to me. If they have a glut of younger barrels and a shortage of older barrels, why cancel the line that uses the most young barrels?

Maybe my assumption is wrong and WT can more easily spare the older barrels than the younger.

Whatever it is, I haven't been intrigued by an 80 proof bourbon in quite some time. I guess I'm still not as this one goes to 81.

Hmmmm... If we can taste WT81 and then taste the WT101 to see how much proof adds, shouldn't we be able to taste Four Roses Yellow Label at 80 proof and then at 100 proof to see what the proof adds??? Maybe someone should propose that to Four Roses... :slappin: :slappin: :slappin:

Nope.

You are comparing apples to asparagus.

The old WT 80 is and always has been younger than WT 101.

The new WT 81 is the same age as WT 101 but cut to 81.

Four Roses Yellow Label is a blend of 14 different bourbons cut to 80 prf.

Four Roses Small Batch is a blend of four different bourbons cut to 90 prf.

Four Roses Single Barrel is only one bourbon cut to 100 prf.

I tasted the WT 81 and the WT 101 back to back then added water to the 101 to get it close to 80 proof. The sample of 81 I have did not taste like 101 with water to me.

Well, see it was a joke.

I wasn't talking about Small Batch or Single Barrel at all.

When some of us had lunch at Four Roses, I asked Jim Rutledge if he'd consider releasing Yellow Label at a higher proof. He said of course he could, but no, he wouldn't really consider doing it.

In my opinion WT shows a lot of batch variation. So I think it would be hard to compare the 101 and the 81 given that I've had several recent 101s that really didn't show that much resemblance to each other.

Back on topic, bought a Russell's Reserve rye yesterday. Definitely not the same profile as the 101 Rye, but there's room for both in the cabinet for sure.
