After leaving work for the last time (at least with this company), I picked up a bottle of Noah's Mill - which I've never owned but remembered liking when I tried it before.

Hope you like that OWA Joe, I helped picked that barrel out last spring. Yes, Thomas runs a great shop and he is always buying barrels.

Thomas said you guys helped pick it out. Well, you did a really nice job. Love the Goetze's Caramel Cream's note to it. Nice spice on the finish. Really, really good. It has always amazed me how such a small shop does so many private barrel selections. They're good people, too. Next time you're heading through there, give me a heads-up, and I'll see if I can arrange a biz trip to the area and we can meet-up at the store and talk shop. I get through there several times a year.

Picked up 2 Virginia Gentleman 90 proof (The fox)

A .375 of WTRB with the 1-99 date.

2 1995 EWSB.

And a .375 of WT Liqueur.

Maybe this should have gone in the dusty thread?

It was a 750. I didn't realize that they were different, but it wouldn't have mattered as I pretty much shot my wad in Chicago buying a crapload of beer.

I got something new yesterday at least new to MI, Evan Williams White Label Bottled In Bond.

For $14.98 it was worth it. I got a bottle in KY years ago but I don't remember how it tastes.

Blanton's Straight From the Barrel arrived at the Post Office today from the UK. Another bottle off the list in my quest to try every Double Gold and Gold medal winner from the 2011 and 2012 San Francisco Spirits Competition (USA, Canada and Irish only, no Scotch). Its been great fun trying to acquire all these different Whiskey's and Bourbons and even more fun trying them with my friends. So far not one has been a big disappointment and many are just great IMHO. I've tried a good number of siulver and bronze medal winners, but am often disappointed in them. After I meet with a buddy on Wednesday, who picked up three bottles on a trip to Kentucky, I will be down to Watkins Select Bourbon, Sazerac 18, two Reservoir's, one Canadian and two Irish ($100 - $240). I hope to find the Resevoirs on a trip to Virgina in September. The SAZ 18 is no where to be found in Texas or any other state I have visited this year (6 total). The Watkins seems to be a bit obscure and low end at $20. But I will keep hunting.....

True, but I'm staying away from the silver and bronze medals. The few I've tried are a step down from the gold medal winners. But I'm new and don't have a great pallet. This list gave me a good starting point and an excuse to buy different bourbons and whiskeys. Since we don't have access to all those Pappy's in Texas I had to go another route.

Wild Turkey 81 Rye won a double gold medal. I recommend staying away from that one :-)

Sorry you didn't get my point those awards are meaningless they are just a show for the distilleries. A double gold medal winner is not any better than a bronze winner it's all advertising. You bring up pappy you really think ER 10/ 90 is better than a pappy? ER 10/ 90 won double gold 5 years in a row. It's just advertising .

I looked at the list of winners of the bourbon categories for 2012. There are a lot of good pours listed, some not so good, some very bad, and some I can't speak to. I think it comes down to this: bourbon is good. If you take a large set of bourbons you'll end up with a lot of good bourbons. Blanton's Straight from the Barrel is definitely one I'd like to try.

While on vacation in east Tennessee I hit up McScrooges for a FRSB for me and a family size OWA single barrel for a fellow SB'er. A side trip to B&B Package netted an OWA and an EC18 barrel pick along with a Weller 12 as a gift for our track host.
