Clavius Posted June 8, 2013 Author Share Posted June 8, 2013 Drank a 2011 bottle of Mer Soleil Silver Unoaked Chardonnay over the course of 2 nights recently. Pretty good Chard, imo. bigtoys Posted July 2, 2013 Share Posted July 2, 2013 had a great Merlot from Napa tonight. Shafer. Smells like when you walk into the wine caves in Napa. big wine to me; nice fruit. I think it'd stand up to many Cabs. had it with a steak and asparagus. My son liked it with his cheeseburgers, too. we will be visiting the winery in Sept. downside: $50. sutton Posted July 13, 2013 Share Posted July 13, 2013 Just tried my homemade 2010 Pinot Noir Columbia Gorge ... needed about an hour of air time, then classic red berry, earth/mushroom aromas, red cherry palate, and a bit of sour cherry/vanilla on the finish. This vintage was slow ripening with a late harvest; I might have pushed the barrel aging a bit long for the vintage. Needs another 6-12 months before opening the next one. devillighter Posted August 24, 2013 Share Posted August 24, 2013 Had a 2004 Dönnhoff Schloßböckelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Spätlese tonight with dinner. I had the most trouble I've ever had with a cork, it crumbled immediately, couldn't get it out, did not have my Ah-so handy, so I bored a hole, poured and filtered the wine without ever getting the cork out. I bought this at the store today, so I am guessing poor storage, although I was a bit surprised since the store I purchased it from is pretty reputable, although not one of my normal wine haunts. The wine was pretty disappointing to me, although I lack experience with more mature Dönnhoffs - the finish was extremely short and the nose was more rubber band and less expressive than a more recent vintage of Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle I had that was absolutely excellent. Other people I drank with enjoyed it more than me, however. Also miffed that I probably overpaid a bit when looking at winesearcher - need that smartphone to prevent these situations... sutton Posted August 24, 2013 Share Posted August 24, 2013 Seven Hills Ciel du Cheval Vineyard 2007 - primarily Cab Sauvignon, but a Bordeaux Blend w/ Merlot, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot. Fruit has faded some exposing more acidity, but tannins are resolved. Lost a lot of fruit in the last two years and is staying reasonably balanced; still, going to be drinking up the rest soon. (Gigondas as a region doesn't get much attention from American consumers, so many wine shops won't carry many.)If the Delaware wholesaler does not carry it as a regular stock item, they will have to special order a solid case from a Jersey warehouse(Where most importers hold stock), so you may have to commit to an entire case.Of course, if Delaware is a control state, and I have no idea if it is, disregard my advice and accept my condolences. The Jersey location that I referenced is where most importers will hold extra stock for shipping to various wholesalers in each state. Every retailer in Delaware still must order wine through their state wholesaler.So, Vintus brings in wine directly from Guigal in France, holds it in Jersey, a wholesaler in Jersey will order through Vintus and store it in a Delaware warehouse, then your friendly neighborhood retailer orders Guigal from said wholesaler, who then ships it to the store.My original point was that stores can't carry everything, but they have access to most things. One does not need to run from store to store to find something, because any retailer worth a damn will bring in a special order for a customer.
