on a side note.....ive only been into bourbon for about a year or so. i live in louisville, and despite being in bourbon central, i not only have never seen any ECBP, ive also never seen any PHC, Stagg, etc....I assume a lot of these upper level offerings are seasonal? maybe large chain stores are not the places to be looking? ive also tried lots of small mom&pop stores too, but they seem to have just the everyday stuff, $40 range and under. maybe I need to be schooled on how to shop for this stuff?

Not sure on those specifically, but if you haven't done so - I'd take a drive south to Bardstown and check some of the stores there. Some may be willing to put you on a list and call. When I had given up hope of finding any 2012 FRSmBLe, I found some in a Krogers in Bardstown (and a couple years ago, in May found some ORVW sitting on a shelf).

Yup, that was a solid move on his part - I'm always good to see SB members get hooked up by others in here.

Yessir, that is where a community such as this can shine. To that end, if we have any SB'ers in the Spokane, WA area it would appear that the Total Wine in that fine city has at least one bottle available!

Noah's Mill 750 ml and Very Old Barton BiB 1.75 L...my first of either. Cannot believe that 1.75 L of VoB was only like $23!

Probably not for long! This part of the forum is open to people other than members which likely includes more than a few flippers. Specific info on a less common bottle might be best posted in a limited thread. I forget where the line is drawn but I think you can tell by seeing what is accessible when you aren't logged on versus when you are.

Of course I suppose there is nothing to keep flippers from becoming members.

So you could also say something like "I know where bottle X might be found in city Y. If interested feel free to PM me for details". Then you can decide who you want to share info with.

Can't stop flippers but doesn't hurt to put up as many roadblocks as possible! Well, in my opinion anyway.

PM is the way to handle sharing information. There are ALOT of members that only lurk, and never post.

Good news is that bourbon is booming...bad news is that in the last 1-2 years it went from special releases sitting on the shelf for a few weeks to a few days (if that in some cases). Even in the Louisville market, 2 xmas holidays ago places like Liquor Barn had massive shelves full of Stagg (i remember for the simple reason of wondering why the heck anyone would buy that high a proof and being confused as to why it was so much more than the bottle next to it). Now.....nope, never put on the shelf and to add to that the distribution has been spread really wide and shallow instead of a given market getting cases.

I don't fault the distillers for satisfy a demand on other locales, but will continue to shake my head why they wouldn't hold more back for their own gift shops (even if jacking the prices up a la HH) so that folks traveling to the area would be able to take a crack at it. Granted, at about the same time the above demand went crazy places like eBay and now BX have popped up meaning more and more people just flipping across state lines in lieu of consuming their purchases. So the "stock in the home turf" theory i have may have been shot to hell anyways.

So, to echo many of the other comments on SB.com, find a store you like, support it well and develop a relationship with an owner. Won't guarantee product, but will be a heck of a more cost effective way than buying from flippers in the future.

That's a very good point.

In situations like these, you can see the similarities to scalping. When tickets are priced "reasonably" and lots of people want them, it creates a secondary market. By pricing higher, you are actually making tickets more available to the general populace and not just scalpers. The same could probably be argued about bourbon; even the special releases, they are just too cheap. (cue groans and eye-rolls). In this way the gift-shops really should have all of their products, hard to get or not, available at a pricing structure similar to HH, keeping some product available and rewarding those who actually trek to mecca.

That being said I don't think there's a ceiling of price that would stop people for Pappy at this given moment. It is insanity.

I agree with this 100 percent. The days of openly posting locations of bottles and expecting anything but buzzards to strip the bones bare are LONG gone on the board. The avarice of the market right now is appalling. Keep it to yourself and share it only with your friends.

Nice to be home from Cincinnati, brought some good stuff back for myself and some for other local SB folks.

I'm really becoming a sucker for trying the barrel selections of various retailers. I was interested to see a Rock Hill Farms barrel selection, I haven't seen one for awhile.

After being properly chastised for not picking up the Michter's 10yo rye yesterday I returned today and bought it and its friends! Also picked up a VSOF 12yo to play around with for variations on the SB blend.

Visiting my parents in Louisville this weekend. I picked up a Weller 12, OWA 107, and Ancient Ancient Age 10. All 1.75L. I don't see the 1.75s of OWA in St. Louis, and have not seen the AAA in St. Louis in any size.

Well done! Tasting notes in the Rye forum would be appreciated. Also if you happen to have a Saz18 open a SBS w the M10 would be interesting.

I will try to work it into the rotation as soon as I can. I will definitely plan to come up with a Saz 18 for comparison and maybe a VWFRR. But that kind of company calls for a few people to share in the experience so not sure when that might be. Definitely will bring it along to the next GBS event for some "professional" evaluation!

That damned goat knows everything.

I've been making a point to stop in various liquor stores around town to venture out from the comfort zone that is BevMo. Seen a lot of talk about Weller 12 Year so I grabbed a bottle. Almost got a bottle of EH Taylor Single Barrel, too.

Dollar for dollar, you made the right pick. I've found most all of the EH Taylor releases meh (at least considering they were all like $70).

Hey MarkRuck, if you can you should post the trio of 1.75 liters. I've never seen those in the wild.

Another '13 FRSB LE just couldn't resist,as it seems the two I picked up in Kentucky didn't last all that long for some reason.

HH is doing that with the limited items keeping them extremely scarce in this area. ECBP, ec20+ and PHC. The gift shop has/had no shortage of the three.

Make a friend with a store owner/manager. Spend your dollars there even if it costs a buck or two more for your daily pours. Walking in the door (or calling) and asking for pappy/stagg et al will rarely get you a bottle at a normal price.

This can't be said enough Eric. It's opened the doors I only once dreamed about.

Like today, get a followup email form my whiskey monger about a EC12 and EWSB barrel pick tasting, hell yah I'm in for it!!

He said the EC samples ranged from 144 to 157 proof. I'm giddy with excitement over that!!

Makes the recent ECBP and Stagg look rather tame......
