Well, I lined up my Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13yo and VW Special Reserve Lot B 12yo -- and the rye won by an extra 1/8th-inch. If I decide on another round later tonight, the Lot B will have a bit more, so it'll win. I win either way.

Ancient Ancient Age 10 Year Old. Not a lot of complexity in the taste of this Bourbon, but it is wonderfully smooth and creamy. Very nice!

Elmer T. Lee. Anyone ever try one of those "christmas beers" made by several different microbrewerys (Anchor Steam makes one, and so does Sierra Nevada)? They taste like beer with nutmeg and other spices added. That's what Elmer T. Lee tastes like to me...bourbon with spices added. A very distinctive taste. Some days I like it and some days I don't. Unfortunately, today I don't. So I think I'll move on to some Van Winkle to cleanse the palate.

I have tried Christmas beers by Sam Adams, Harpoon, & Saranac. . . . and you are right! That is what Elmer T Lee tastes like, good call!

Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year Old 107 Proof. This stuff is just SOOOO GOOD! One of these days I'm going to open up the ORVW 15 YO big brother and compare 'em. Should be tasty!

Tonight it is Buffalo Trace. I am getting so much apple in here that at first I though I picked up a glass of hard cider confused.gif I wish everyone had access to this bourbon. At $15 a bottle, this is a perfect example of what a premium bourbon should be (and cost) toast.gif

Basil Hayden's 8 yr, 80 proof. Just trying to get rid of it. To me, this is another smooth, mellow, bland whiskey. My preference for bourbon (or any whiskey) is for FLAVOR.

I'm on the other end with Weller "Special Rerserve" 7yo. Not bad bourbon for the price, but I'd go for a couple more dollars and the 12yo. yum.gif

All this Weller talk made me go open my bottle of Weller 12 year I got at the festival this year. This bourbon is a sleeper, not the best looking bottle on the store shelf but a great bourbon for the price. You are right Jeff, Chris and I opened a bottle of the Weller Special Reserve 7 year and Weller 12 year while in the hotel room during the festival and we both said the 12 year was a better bourbon for the few extra bucks.

I like the 12 year better than both the special reserve & the Antique, though the 7/107 is good enough to keep around. . . if fact I thnk I will have some tonight!

I'll be damned. Tonight is Weller night. I just finished a drink of the 12 yo before I came online to see all the rest of you enjoying Weller products.

Sadly, though, my 1.75L is getting low. Time for a KY road trip.

Definitely have to agree with what Marvin was saying at the festival... That weller 12year gets much better after sitting out in the glass for a while...

Tonight it's just a simple Old Forester 86 -- I've already had a glass of wine with dinner, and a Finlandia and Coke watching the Cubs lose (I started the series rooting for Chicago, until the "It's got to be someone else's fault" uproar about the foul-ball grabber in Game 6; now I'm glad the Marlins won, though I have no real stake in it either way). A 2-ounce taste of OF makes this a wild night for me.

I'm going to stop by my local retailer and pick up the ORVW10YR107. It seems to get the approval of a lot of bourbonites. I'll smoke a R&J Vintage V. Heck...that sounds so good, I'd better get going.

And then you're going to march right down to the "Smokes" forum and give us your impressions toast.giflol.gif

I'm having a glass of the Van Winkle 12 y.o "Old Time" rye. Damn, this stuff is good. I still have a couple of bottles bunkered away, but once those are gone it will be a sad day indeed.

I am a transplant to Virginia and should have studied up on the limitations of what would be available at the ABC. Stopped in today and saw a Virginia Bourbon distilled just a bit down the road from me in Spotsylvania (what a town). Picked it up and I am suprised that I thorughly like it...Virginia Gentleman Single Barrel. drink.gif It has a sweet aroma and a mild taste with a medium finish. It is put through a copper still and I think that this makes a difference. It is the first NON Kentucky bourbon I have tried and I am truly enjoying it!

Goodnight from the south.

Well, not right now, but in a few minutes I'm going to have a healthy shot of WT Russell's Reserve while doing some reading. It (RR) is really starting to grow on me. Finally.

I am finishing up reading Tolkien's The Return of the King and starting to anxiously await the release of the movie. I have re-read each book of the trilogy over the past three falls in preparation for the release of the movies. I also re-read The Hobbit at some point in there. It amazes me how fresh the writing still seems.

Tim,

I have read all four books (accompamied many times by a great bourbon pour) over the last year, actually in rather quick succession over the summer. In a great compliment to the author, after reading like 2000 pages of his work continuously, I was dissapointed that I was "done already".

The sporting events last night kept me out of the mood to drink reflectively (more like wanting lots of beer to alleviate stress), so I abstained completely. Because of the results, instead of the victory Stagg I had planned, I had a healthy pour of comforting Ancient Ancient Age 10 year.

I am, too. I have actually finished the story and am now diligently wading through the "reference materials" at the end.

To continue my habit, I may have to get The Silmarillion , but I have always heard that it isn't quite up to the standard of the rest of them. Actually, didn't J.R.R. just leave a bunch of manuscript and the actual book was finished by his son?

Tim

P.S., the Russell's Reserve was excellent. Sweet and spicy.

Well last night it was a nice shot of EB 15year and a bit of ginger ale .... normally I don't mix but last night it was a good choice very enjoyable ...As to the works of Tolken, I have enjoyed them all but for The Silmarillion , it is a correct that is was a completed byhis son and a compilement of note and manuscripts for the history of Middle Earth . I found it very hard to really get into in that it was more of a dry out line history than like his works before ,IMHO.
