What Bourbon Are You Drinking - Spring 2014

Bourbon Club met last night at work. New bottles this month were Barterhouse, Bulleit 10, and OWA. Everybody liked the Barterhouse. I don't think it's worth the price and the finish is lacking but I'd drink it again. Ppeople really liked the nose on it. The Bulleit 10 was good but not worth the upcharge. There are other bottles I prefer for ~$35. The OWA showed well though most prefer Weller 12. We finished off a FR OESK store selection that blew everything else out of the water. No idea what I'm buying for the club in June. Depends on how many people commit with their wallets but right now I'm thinking a bottle or three from this group: OGD, BT, Woodford, WTRB, and EHTBP.

My first go at Henry McKenna Single Barrel 10 year. I am impressed, good caramel flavor up front and a tobacco finish.

Wonderful cool evening here in GA, enjoying an Aging Room F55 Quattro on the porch. Just finished a pour of Saz18 that was absolutely Devine. Finishing the cigar up with a pour of 4RSB (older party source selection). Watching my tired German Shepherd pup zonk out on the couch inside. It was a rewarding day of yard work and dog training, he's going to be a very handsome dog. Wondering why I didn't get one sooner, he's been worth every minute and every frustration.

Went back to OFBB '13. Love the taste but can't get excited about the medicinal after taste.

Sounds like a great evening, Mark. Pretty much the same here, except the Sheltie has been hunkered down and hiding in Littlesmokinjoes closet with all the thunder and lightening. Oliva Serie V and Old Forester BIB dimpled bottle are making this nice Georgia evening a very good one.

Ive been waiting the radar on and off, it looked threatening here, but never materialized into anything more than a few small rumbles. Cloud cover certainly cooled off what was a pretty warm day. I just hope the wife doesn't notice the Saz18 bottle shrunk again, I know she's dying to hit it once the baby comes. She's got top shelf taste.

Daryll, I'm pretty sure that's the first good thing I've ever heard about Bernheim Wheat.

I did some errands and helped plant four tomato plants and some flowers today. It was sunny and hot, so thank goodness for bourbon and ginger ale (gotta stay hydrated somehow)! Took a little break to wash up and have dinner, and now I'm about to have a little EW BIB (neat).

Got home from a gig, and relaxing with Four Roses Single Barrel. I tried this last Monday and my allergies were crazy, so it's nice to actually nose and taste this bourbon this time!

Pretty good day of flat out relaxing after a few tough weeks at work. Started early in the evening with 4R SmB and then some Booker's. Fired up the grill for some thick pork chops and now that dinner is done, I'm finishing up with some OGD114 thanks to some inspiration from being in chat with squire prior to the grilling.

Spent 5ish hours cleaning my house after finally finishing some home renovations. Rewarding myself with a nightcap of OGD114. My most recent bottle of this (bottling code puts it at 2013) was a little off when I opened it, so I took the cork out and let it sit open for about 8-9 hours total. At this point nearly all of the off flavors have disappeared, and I've got a great pour of vanilla, oranges, and baking spice. Well done OGD, well done.

Pete - I had tried it a couple times before and was always left underwhelmed. Haven't bought a bottle myself, but with the wheat PHC I really wanted to revisit it (without buying a bottle). I honestly was prepared to not like it (again), and was surprised. My prior brushes left me thinking it was pretty bland overall (disclaimer, these were on nights when we were pouring some other robust bourbons!). I thought it had a unique sweetness about it, and a bit of a bite on the finish (I recalled there being pretty much zero bite before). I'm still not sure I'll pick one up (although I might just to have something "different" in the cabinet), but I'm now more excited about this years PHC for sure!

Guess I wasn't alone when I had OGD114 last night. Started with a Smooth Ambler 7 year. Both tasted particularly delicious. I think it was one of those nights when my palate was especially attuned to the beauty and wonder that is bourbon.

Sounds like a good night. If you do want to revisit the Henry McKenna 10, I'd suggest looking for a store select at some point. They can be very very good.

Found some RHF yesterday and cracked it open for a taste. It was very good IMO. I did not pick up on the grassiness that I've seen mentioned in some old threads, but got a lot of the cinnamony goodness. I may have to make a trip back to the store today to grab one more since these seem to be hard to find.

Last night was a quick first try dram of WTRB 108 proof.

Very, very good bourbon, but just ever so slightly not my taste.

I do it with any whisk(e)y I open up that has weird chemical-flavored off notes. In recent memory, I've also had to do it with my bottle of Parker's Heritage Promise of Hope, Connemara, Springbank 10, and Kilchoman Machir Bay. In the case of the Springbank and Kilchoman, it was a night and day difference, with both whiskies going from unenjoyable to amazing. The OGD114 also falls into that category. Still working on liking the POH. I think it needs more air time. The Connemara never made it beyond "awful," and I ended up giving the bottle away to someone who wanted it.

Nope - it's one my dad has had for a bit (I'd guess more than 6 months, but not positive). Although my expectation is that the taste isn't going to change when the add the age statement. I think with the wheat, it has likely always been 7yrs or older since it tends to be so mild already, and they figure that they can add more marketing spin with the label change to take credit for what they're producing. If someone thinks it will taste like a 7 yr old bourbon, they'll be sorely disappointed though.

So Gary, when producers add age statements it's simply "marketing spin"? :skep:
