Well I'm certainly not getting Anise. Nose isn't half bad, but there is a bit of a "soapy" quality pushing the rye out of the way. Not in love with the finish either. For the record, mine has barrel #3 listed on the label. I'll revisit after it gets some air, maybe it will improve for my tastes. Certainly doesn't live up to the mash bill.

First pour hasn't been great. Heading back through KY this weekend on the way to the Indy 500. Won't be bringing another one of these home. Might grab someone's Old Scout 10 selections if I can find one. McScrooges had a few a few weeks back.

At least you aren't getting lots of anise on the nose!

Did a blind tasting of 4 JB offerings with a buddy who is a JBW drinker. We tasted:

JBW

JBB

JBSB

JB12

we were both able to pick JBW correctly but after that all bets were off. Interestingly to me I end up ranking JJB as my fav. Here was my final order from fav to least:

JBB

JBSB

JBW

JB12

We had a good time and learned a bit as well, I always knew I liked JBB just didn't know I liked it this much.

Cracked open an interesting bottle tonight. A Japanese export called The Yellow Rose of Texas 15 yr 101 proof. It's excellent, HH all the way and not over-oaked at all.

Please tell me more about this

The flavor profile immediately reminded me of HH 6 yr BiB, but much more refined. It had a nice sweet caramel finish as well. HH made this brand for export to Japan, not sure if they still do or not.

Keeping it simple tonight with 4R Small Batch. This another exceptional pour that is always available. The more I find that I really enjoy pours like this, the smaller is the list of limited releases I feel the need to chase.

Started with a pour of FR OBSO last night--it is barrel strength, but only about 104 proof. I like it, but frankly don't love it, and it is not a FR I would stock up on. Without having access to other FR private bottlings, FRSB at $30 is plenty good for me for my FR fix.

Moved on to a Dickel 14 that I've had open for a couple of months, and didn't do much for me initially. I think airtime has done it good, and it was tasting very nice last night.

Id love to try that sometime. Louisville recently got a small trickle of '14 9 year in, but still havent seen a 14 year.

Had a pour of my BS 4R Smb that I vatted the other night. Cut it to 100 and enjoyed a delicious multi-layered pour. Different from 90p Smb as my ratios were 1:1:1:1 and I don't know what 4R does with standard Smb. I was certainly able to enjoy the contributions of all the individuals after getting to know them first in SB form. Good fun and a great drink.

Cracked open the RRSmBSB I snagged from the WT Gift Shop. I got sold by the hang tag that shows it was for the grand opening, and gives me the hope it is "better" than what is generally available (which I like well enough anyways, so if it is only as good as my first bottle, I'm happy). First pour is promising, at least as good as the last bottle I had. Big, chewy, sweet chocolate.
