camduncan
If you're looking for one for Derby Day, it doesn't get much closer than this: http://www.kentuckyderby.com/experience/traditions/mint-julep2 But this is my all time favourite. I make it up in bulk so I can enjoy them whenever, or share with a large number of people without having to spend an hour behind the bar when entertaining:
Harry in WashDC
What Cam said.If you don't have time to make your minted simple syrup, here's a recipe my wife found in the April 2005 Bon Appetit magazine and modified a little.Crush about 4 cups of ice. Put some in a metal cup or glass that holds about 10-12 OZ. Pack it and mound it. We use double Old Fashioned glasses. In a mixing glass without ice, bruise (that is, don't smash to bits) 8 good-sized fresh mint leaves and stir them with 1 teaspoon of brown sugar and 2 OZ of good bourbon (BIB or higher proof preferred by us to counter the ice effect over time) until the sugar is dissolved (it takes awhile but helps blend all the flavors).Strain the mixture over the ice. Garnish with a mint sprig (the little leaves at the top work fine). Serve with a straw. As Cam stated, it's best to make a batch of the mint/sugar/bourbon ahead of time and let it sit then measure some out as needed and as ice gets crushed. This also allows the maker to decide how much bourbon to put in the ice.
