List of similar bourbons?

Hi All,

New to the group and was wondering if there is a list anywhere of similar bourbons. Something that groups them together based on different characteristics.

A list that I can look at and see something I like and then see others that are similar without having to try everything. Not that I wouldn't want to try everything but that could get expensive and take years.

Thanks,

Dave

easiest way would be to look and the whiskey tree and group by mashbills.

there are some outliers (yeast and rickhouse location can be causes) that are the same mashbill, but for the most part, same starters going in and similiar proof in the bottle are going to be pretty darn close.

This could help a bit for you, it gives each major Distilleries Mash Bill breakdown. You could judge by similar mashbills what you might like and might not, for example I tend to gravitate toward high rye mash bill bourbons while some others are silly and only like wheaters.

Beam - http://bourbonr.com/blog/jim-beam-distillery-mashbill/

Four Roses - http://bourbonr.com/blog/four-roses-mash-bill/

Heaven Hill - http://bourbonr.com/blog/heaven-hill-distillery-by-mashbill/

Buffalo Trace - http://bourbonr.com/blog/buffalo-trace-distillery-bourbon-mash-bills/

But it is more fun just to try everything!

the whiskey tree is a great start but last year I just gave up using it and decided to try them all.

Much more fun.

And you know, its really not that many. I've only been really into bourbon the last 2 years and I think I've tasted nearly all of them currently on the market from the major distillers, and a decent amount of older/rarer stuff at random bars.

Its not like Scotch, a man would kill himself and his tastebuds even trying that.

Use the whiskey tree, I try to group recipes in my head by high rye (over 20%), standard, and wheated mashbills. There are a few experimental mashes out there now too using different flavor grains.

May not be exactly what you're looking for, but drinkdistiller.com has a nice feature where, given one whiskey, shows you three others with similar characteristics

  • 5 years later...

Visited the Heaven Hill Welcome Center in Bardstown last week.   Enjoyed the tasting, as well as the tour guide's knowledge and talk on Heaven Hill's history.

(Unfortunately, no tour is currently available, which was disappointing.   The Welcome Center is about to go through a multi-million dollar renovation & expansion, due to to be completed in about a year (but, my impression is that tours would still not involve the working distillery or rick houses).

The tour guide displayed the following Heaven Hill mash bill chart, indicating that all of Heaven Hills whiskies follow one of the mashbills:

Wow. Two posts five and half years ago. We’re getting pretty good at scaring people away. I feel a little like Aykroyd in nothing But Trouble.

What a great story.  Very few of us get to live our fantasies.
