Just what is Southern Comfort anyway?

For some reason it seems to be a starter liquor for many as a teen, myself included. Seagrams 7 was another like that.

Haha, after a couple of healthy pours of real bourbon, I initially read this as "it seems to be starter fluid." That conjures up images of using it to light charcoal or starting lawnmower engines.

I just found out about Southern Comfort Lime. Is this new news or am I just the last one on the train.

Aggghhh! Lime and apricot with bourbon flavoring. Lemme at it.

I remember seeing it in a store, I think, several months back about the time I saw SouCom 100 proof on the shelf. According to the SouCom website, they also offer SC with "bold" black cherry (aside: glad it's not meek black cherry) and a couple other mixtures that are only available overseas (no comment but I am smirking). One domestic offering piques my interest - SouCom "Special Reserve" with the tagline, "If you know what "Special Reserve" means, this is probably the Southern Comfort for you." Since I don't, I guess it isn't.

I knew I should have stayed out of this thread. Your orange citrus descriptions just brought back a lot of memories I thought I had forgot. My college dorm roommate would often split a fifth of this garbage with another guy. The other guys was 200 lbs. My roommate was 140 lbs soaking wet. The bigger guy would call my roommate all kinds of name to get him to keep up. They usually put it away in an hour. Man, my roommate would get sick on that like clockwork. Simply nasty. The worst was when he crawled up into his bed - we had a loft in our dorm - and he got sick and it splattered all over the room from the seven foot drop. Needless to say, I stayed away from our dorm that weekend.

Good ol' SoCo was a common bottle in the "drinking to get drunk" days (i.e. College)

With that said, I would guess a Sloe Comfortable Screw is still a nice summer cocktail, whether it's up against a wall or otherwise.

Not bragging but the drunkest I have ever been was on Southern Comfort. I was a teenager still living at home and not really sure how I got home that night but I didn't want my parents to know I was drunk (and sick.) I opened my bedroom window, pushed the window screen out into the yard and hung out the window throwing up most of the night. Haven't touched Southern Comfort since.

I moved into drinking alcohol slowly only after I turned 21. Started with craft beer (not a bad start!), then got into wine tastings with my new bride (again... an admirable transition). But, when I moved to spirits, it was unfortunately SoCo that served as my starting point. I thought I was buying bourbon (shows how much I knew). My main recollection of that night (besides the total shock of realizing it was a super sweet liquour), was seeing my friend throw up ON the St. Louis Arch having imbibed too heavily for the first time in his life.

Thankfully my booze buying trends went up substantially in the years that came.

I too thought I was drinking whiskey the first time I tried SoCo. I first had it in a mixed drink, which was surprisingly good. I realized that it was a liquour when I drank it straight. I later found out that it gives you hangovers that only the likes of Jose Cuervo can compare. Just the thought of drinking that stuff again makes me ill.
