amg
Had a nice glass of EWSB '01 tonight. Every time I open a bottle of EWSB it doesn't stick around long. This will be no exception.

polish.bourbon
I found GTS 2014 at a restaurant this evening. $24 for a very healthy pour. Followed up by EC12 x2. Very pleased.
beerforbreakfast
coincidentally, i just tast tasted bourbon for the first time last night--EW 2005 SB (barrell number 50) would you happen to know if the earlier the barrell number means it's likely to taste better, or is there relatively no difference? I can't say but my 05 I just carried upstairs is Barrel number 75 and my 04 is Barrel number 1195 so I will try to post my comparison/notes when I eventually do a SBS. Richnimrod
coincidentally, i just tast tasted bourbon for the first time last night--EW 2005 SB (barrell number 50) would you happen to know if the earlier the barrell number means it's likely to taste better, or is there relatively no difference? My experience with EWSB Vintages is that, within a given Vintage the bottles are mostly similar, regardless of barrel #. BUT, there are certainly some outliers to be found, being a 'Single Barrel' offering. HH is pretty good about picking for a profile, but nobody is 100% perfect, nor would we want that! A SB offering is supposed to be able to show some variation, and generally does. But, I don't think earlier barrel numbers confer any likelihood of 'better' Bourbon, whatever that may mean to anybody.
squire
would you happen to know if the earlier the barrel number means it's likely to taste better, or is there relatively no difference?Sorta like non identical twins, the similarities are there yet some slight differences are apparent. Those who have followed the brand over the years have favorites of course but the guy responsible, Master Distiller Craig Beam, is on record as saying he thinks recent years are better than earlier ones because "I've gotten better at picking the barrels". It is a showcase best of breed label for Heaven Hill though so I'll take whatever they pick.
dcbt
Celebrated the end of a year-and-a-half project at the same client with a couple pours I've never had before at Whiskey Cake. Tried the McKenna BiB since that was just about the only bourbon on the menu I hadn't tried before. Enjoyed it but it also didn't stand out to me.Then I looked around and noticed the off-menu stash, which included Cured Oak for 20 bones. What the hell, let's give it a spin. I think the comparisons to ER17 are valid. I happen to love that so Cured Oak was very enjoyable to me. Not worth the secondary prices but glad I got to try a pour. The bottle still looked half full or so but not sure when I would have been back up in time to try it.

I haven't opened my 2005 so have no opinion on it. That said, I posted someplace on SB (probably more than once - you know how THAT goes when you get old:searching:) that I like them all enough, even at 86.6 proof, to keep buying them but probably not more than one or two of each year coning up unless it s WONderful. EW Black is my basic mixer and the one I offer up neat to new-to-bourbon.Tonight, I'm sipping KC. I'm still torn on what to do with JBB "Extra Aged" and the new JB BIB -- Do I really need three JBs in my rotation? Is a puzzlement, and KC even though it s a little rough, may fill the space. But that JB BIB . . .

zillah
Was drinking MMCS. I don't think I particularly like wheated bourbons other than BT's wheated bourbon. I am starting to think wheated bourbon is the inferior recipe...
kjbeggs
Tried a couple of new pours.First up, the Jefferson Manhattan Cocktail- Not anywhere near as good as I was hoping. I found it very Vermouth-heavy. Maybe it's just me, as I tend to overpour on the whiskey element when making myself a Manhattan, and almost always use Rye (this is bourbon-based). Anyway, the Vermouth completely overpowers the Bourbon in this. The High West 36th vote tastes much better in my opinion, and is slightly higher proof (37% VS 34%). Of course, neither is quite as good as just making your own with quality ingredients.Secondly, I opened my first bottle of Balcones True Blue, Cask Strength Corn Whiskey. When I found this on the shelf, I was tempted to grab two of their six bottles, but I was afraid I wouldn't like it. (I was expecting that very corn-forward, young whiskey profile that I find so displeasing in things like Garrison Brothers). I could not have been more wrong. This was one of those moments that makes this hobby so much fun. A totally new experience, sitting somewhere between a nice bourbon and a smoky (not peaty) single malt scotch, and yet somehow different from either. After the first sip, I immediately looked at the clock to see if the store might still be open. Alas, it was already past closing time, and when I rushed up there the next day, the other five bottles were all gone.
