Four Roses Single Barrel Vs Four Roses Small Batch

I love 4R Small Batch it ranks very high for me, but I have never had 4R Single Barrel. Today I saw what must has been a new shipment for the store, I was in, as it is the first time I have seen the 4R Single Barrel and they have at least 10 bottles on the shelf. The Single Barrel is about $25 higher than the Small Batch.

Is the Single Barrel a worthy purchase vs the Small Batch?

$25 higher seems way out of line to me. Around here the 4RSB goes for 39.99 and the 4RSmB for 26.99. Whether or not it is worth the difference, depends upon your taste and which 4R recipe you prefer. Finding out is the fun part!

I prefer the standard small batch to the standard single barrel. I'm happy to have both. You might look for a miniature bottle of the standard single barrel. They're not very expensive and Total Wine or BevMo should have them.

Short answer both are worth having ( I do!!). Longer version, they are different animals. The Smb is a "batch" of 4 of the 10 recipes, OBSO,OESO,OBSK,OESK and it exhibits characteristics of all 4 which will become evident if you ever get to try the recipes individually but it has no bearing on the enjoy-ability of the Smb. Just trying to splain that rainbow of flavors effect it has, its a great pour.

The SB is the OBSV recipe alone and it is a higher proof than the Smb and features the flavor profile of its lone recipe which BTW is a pretty fantastic recipe.

A few years ago this question was posed and while I won't get the wording right it summed it up nicely for me and went something along the lines of Smb being like a painting featuring several colors vs SB as a vibrant display of a single color. It was stated more elegantly but that's the gist, maybe someone can link that old post if they recall it.

Buy both and enjoy they are mainstays at Chateau de Gumbohead, oh yeah I'm in the cult!!

I'm another fan of both pours, but would prefer the SB if I have the extra $$. In my area it seems the Smb is more widely available than the SB. I say try both and see what you think!

I like both, but probably the single barrel most. BUT, the prices are much more in line in Minnesota. Probably max of $35 for single barrel here, and ~$10 less for the Small Batch.

If you are in Phoenix stop by TW&M small batch is 25 and single barrel is $34 (it was $45 a few months ago)

The difference here is $16. The FRSmB sells for $33.99 and the FRSB for $49.99. I only own the small batch.

Holy crap, those prices are terrible. Four Roses Small Batch is about $25-$30 and the Single Barrel is $30-$40 depending on the store.

To the original poster: I rarely dislike a Four Roses bourbon, but I do prefer Yellow Label and Single Barrel to the Small Batch.

I prefer the SB and consider it to be an exceptional whiskey. Considering the fact that it is a readily available standard brand at 100 proof, it's remarkable that 4R is able to keep this high volume single barrel product in such a tight profile window.

What Paddy said. Also, about the time I get tired of an open FRSmB, a switch to an open FRSB works for me. AND, when I get tired of the FRSB, . . . Intersperse some barrel selections I picked up (two recently, both now open, too), and I always have at least one FR offering ready to satisfy a craving.

I would encourage you to pick up a FRSB. I like the SmB. It is really good. However, the SB is a step up!

I haven't tasted a SB yet but I tried the SmB at a bar and liked it. I have a bottle of each in the bunker but it will be some time before I can bring them upstairs to drink.

The prices are about $8-$10 different in Japan (maybe $28-30 for the SmB, $36-$40 for the SB).

I tried them both side-by-side once, and I bought the SmB. However I like the SB too. They have different taste profiles, and while the SB is arguably a "better product" due to being slightly higher proofed, I think your personal preference between the taste profiles will be a much more significant factor in which you prefer. Maybe that goes without saying.

Each individually is one of the best values in whiskey in my opinion.

I actually like the SmB better than the SB. so that's what I keep on hand. I got to do a tasting last year at FR of the 4 recipes in the SmB. OBSK was by far my favorite. If I could locate a bottle of SB OBSK, that is the only FR I would buy.

Thought the SmB was OK - wouldn't refuse a glass if it was handed to me. Tried a glass of the SB and promptly went back and got 2 more bottles. Stunning stuff if you like rye-heavy bourbon...
