Yep......it's always nice when a no longer available NDP shows up on one of these lists. Cracks me up every time.

This is pretty comical. They also have this blurb about PVW20: "[PVW20] is now distilled and bottled at the Buffalo Trace factory by the Sazerac Company, using old stock from the original Stitzel-Weller Distillery". Hmm, don't believe this has been true for some time now.

Apparently that reporter's research well doesn't run very deep.

Happy to see Larceny showing up on lists here. I really think HH hit their stride with wheaters over the past few years. Of course now none of them are available here. We used to get OFBIB but that dried up last year and I bought the last two bottles I found in the state. Hopefully Larceny will make its way here soon.

As for my top five, I'm in the camp that finds favorites changing all the time. I'm with PaulO in always having a HH bond of some sort around. After that, the list would probably be:

OWA

FRSB

VOB BIB

OGD114

Next month the list will probably change

For somewhat readily available American whiskies:

ECBP - king of the multiple releases per year whiskies

4R Private Selections

SAOS barrel proof ryes - with the discontinuation of their rye barrel program, this is sadly going to drop off the list

Rittenhouse rye

Henry McKenna SB BIB

All time:

Jefferson 17

Hirsch 21

PVW 23

various old Willetts

4R 125th

Still new to bourbons but my top 5:

1) ER10

2) RHF

3) 4RSB

4) WT RB BP

5) BT

i agree that tastes change frequently. Just picked up the Rock Hill and absolutely loved it and the WT RB barrel proof and they rapidly moved into my top 5 from the first drink. Other 3 are my daily drinkers along with Basil Hayden

Going to have to concur with everyone who said that tastes will change over time, but currently:

Four Roses Store Select Barrel Strength (any recipe) - Currently enjoying an OBSF

Smooth Ambler Old Scout 7 Year Straight Bourbon - I love this stuff

Blanton's Single Barrel - this one started me down the bourbon road

Eagle Rare - mileage can vary, however

Four Roses Single Barrel 100 proof

I haven't yet tried my ECBP #8 and Stagg Jr. #3. I first want to finish what I've already got open. So I imagine my list could change very soon!

Joining the "readily available" gang:

1) SB blend

2) OWA single barrel store picks

3) Whatever FR PS I have open

4) OGD 114

5) SAOS CS rye-sadly falling out of the readily available category.

I'll divide my answer as well- top five all time and top five regularly available:

All time favorites in no particular order

Four Roses 120th anniversary. ( I've tasted it head to head against other releases and it remains my favorite)

black Maple Hill 16 yo

Very Old Scout 19 - this was a blend of 19 yo and older whiskey and was simply fantastic

William Larue Weller. 'Nuff said

EH Taylor Tornado Surviving

regular favorites, also in no particular order:

buffalo trace

Elmer T Lee

Old Weller Antique

1792

Very Old Barton BIB

the second set could probably be twice as long; in general, my favorite bourbon is the one in my glass!

I haven't tried any of the really hard to find or well aged stuff, but these are the ones that stuck out to me so far:

1. Rittenhouse Rye (rye but I believe one of the best values and most readily available ones)

2. Evan Williams Single Barrel

3. Wild Turkey Rare Breed

4. Four Roses Single Barrel

5. Blanton's (though i'm not sure if it's worth the price)

I have quite a bit in the cabinet that I haven't opened yet, so This will be a list of my CURRENT top 5. And while we are on the subject of caveats, on any given day/mood, any one of these could be my favorite.

1) ECBP

2) 4RSiB - Store Picks

3) ETL

4) Blanton's

5) SAOS - Barrel Proof

Stagg, PVW15, BMH, and a few others are certainly on the list, but since they are unavailable, I separated them.

1) Stagg Jr (batch 4)

2) Elijah Craig Barrel Proof (ECBP) - batch 8

3) Old Grand Dad 114 (OGD114)

4) Buffalo Trace (BT)

5) Elijah Craig 12 (EC12)

..I have a lot more to try, but these tend to be my regulars.  I also seem to prefer the higher proofs.

I still haven't had a lot of bourbons being located in Canada but I can easily say it's my favourite spirit.

My list of bourbons and American whiskys I would keep instock that don't break the bank:

Eagle Rare 10yr

Ridgemont Reserve 1792 (have this open now, very creamy feeling, was quite surprised by this one)

Wild Turkey Rare Breed

Rittenhouse Rye

EH Taylor Small Batch
