My Bride and I are gonna be in SLC in a week or so, only for a couple days. We're touring some National Parx with a group.

I'm hoping to have enough free time to visit High West while there. I know they do a pretty nice job on some very innovative offerings.

Is there anything in particular I look for at the HW gift shop?

Is there a liquor store in the area worth a visit? Any 'tips' will be greatly appreciated.

Any tips?

"Don't eat yellow snow"

Someone passed that one along at some point, and it seemed important ;)

The High West Saloon in Park City is a very nice place to eat and they still have the original stills there. You can sign up for tours but the restaurant does not typically take reservations. They have a gift shop with the standard bottles there but all the newest stuff isn't likely to be available before September. The new distillery is not yet officially open as I think the grand opening is going to be in September on Labor Day I believe. They will likely have some special bottles available for that event. But they may no be released before that.

Unless you know people who know people...

(Jeez, I can't evn use smiley faces at the momntan this intermittent typing isgetting annoying!)

The lack of response should tell you something about the state of alcohol here in the state of Utah.

Given a free afternoon in SLC, its worth the drive up to Park City to eat at High West and check out the place. I haven't been out to the new distillery yet to comment on it. If you make it up to PC, you can also hit the liquor store at snow creek (store #38), I'm told its the 2nd largest in the state, so if its sold in Utah, they probably have it. The downside is bourbon selection in all of Utah is basically just standard releases, thank you mormon overlords!!! You can search the UDABC inventory here: http://www.webapps.abc.utah.gov/Production/OnlineInventoryQuery/IQ/InventoryQuery.aspx

The #1 store in the state is somewhere in SLC, so I'm sure you'll find something decent to enjoy while you are here.

Utah does have decent craft beer, available at 4%abv in the grocery stores and above 4% in the state stores. Good brewpubs in SLC include: Desert Edge, Squatters, Wasatch, Bohemian, Uinta, and The Annex by Epic Brewing. Anything on tap is 4%abv, to get beer above 4% in restaurants, it must be served from a bottle.
