Picked up a mix-n-match 6 pack today consisting of Shiner Holiday Cheer, Rahr Winter Warmer, Sammy Adams Downtime Pilsner, Community Witbier, Revolver Bock, and Ziegen Bock.  I haven't tried the first four at all, and I haven't had that last one in 15+ years so I'm curious to give it a whirl again.

Edit, trying the Shiner Holiday now - I pick up a lot of fruit, peaches maybe.  Interesting.  Pretty decent, but also glad I only got one.

Hah, I got a pick 6 from a local mainly because they had left hand bottles,  and it was cheaper than a left hand 6 pack, but I picked a shiner holiday 6-fold.

Miller Fortune with lunch, pretty good stuff.  I suppose the quirky bottle is supposed to add some "perceived value" but the beer stands on it's own.

Don't drink beer much anymore because it almost always results in a headache about a half hour later, but I make exceptions here and there and the holiday season brings out some good seasonal ales that are hard to resist. Ever since Thanksgiving I've been enjoying this year's release of Deschutes Jubelale - a long time favorite. It's a little different every year and this year's is exceptional so I've been drinking more than usual.

Just finished up my run, and while walking and cooling down, my thoughtful German neighbor came out and handed off a Weihenstephaner Heffe Dunkel.  Enjoying it now out on the patio!

It really does!

Mrssmokinjoe and I went to Ted's Montana Grill for dinner, and I washed down the bison sliders with a SweetWater 420.

Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree!  Yes!  Not as tart as Hopslam or Double Trouble, But oh the fullness of this brew.

Is there a new batch of that already? It's a favorite of mine.

Tried a Blue and Red label Chimay last night and REALLY REALLY liked the blue label. Red was pretty good but I found the blue to be far superior. I also picked up a white label, so looking forward to trying that one as well.

Mrssmokinjoe is looking for me to get the Christmas decoration boxes up in the attic this afternoon, but I'm going to continue to sit out here in the back yard and enjoy this Terrapin Golden Ale.  My trust in y'all runs deep, so I know y'all won't tattle... ;)

I've been drinking Deschutes "The Abyss" 2015 reserve. Deschutes doesn't get much distribution east of the Mississippi so for those not familiar, this beer is a barrel aged imperial stout described as "a malt beverage brewed with black strap molasses, licorice, with cherry bark and vanilla added with 21% aged in oak bourbon barrels, 8% aged in oak barrels, and 21% aged in oak wine barrels."

it is beautiful wonderful stuff. Deschutes is consistently one of my favorite breweries.

I always like to try the latest from Almanac, a local brewery that mainly does sours and other barrel aged offerings. Last night I tried their Truthful Statement, which they say is a "sour stout aged in Woodford Reserve barrels with orange peel and cherries". I had high hopes for this one based on the description, so was sad that this fell flat. There wasn't much in the way of traditional stouty flavors and  the sourness was strange and not integrated (it just kinda came in at the end). Perhaps I was hoping too hard for something along the lines of Tart of Darkness.

Drinking some Black Xantus, this is a stout that is always available in my area and I really like it. Great coffee and chocolate flavor.

A buddy invited me to a food and beer pairing yesterday and he did a stellar job.  The beers that we sampled were amazing.  I've been to a few bottle shares before but none of them came close to what we sampled yesterday.

Sam Adams Utopia 10th Anniversary, Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA, Bourbon County Brand Stout (vintages 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015), Bell's Oracle, Bell's Saturn, Three Floyds Dark Lord 2009, Pipeworks Ninja vs. Unicorn, Maine Beer Company Dinner, Toppling Goliath King Sue, Thomas Hardy's Ale (1991), Lost Abbey Judgment Day and Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree.

I also shared the last of my Van Winkle Lot B and GTS 14 bottles with the group and they were greatly appreciated.

Sometimes I want something not too complicated.  I picked up a case of Icehouse (hadn't had it in years).  I was pleasantly surprized.  For an American style light lager, it's pretty good.  It's way better than the brands that advertise constantly during football.

Every once in a great while, someone will give me a Miller Lite.  I'm amazed how bad it tastes.  To me, Lite is like carbonated water with an odd bitter and metalic aftertaste (even from a bottle).  Have these people never tried any other brand?  I'm even more amazed people seem to buy a lot of it.

How was that Utopia? I have the same one tucked away somewhere but just haven't had a good excuse to open it yet.

Founders CBS was my favorite beer.  Now this Utopia is.  It was a stunner.  The nose was so great I took my time drinking it.  When I did drink it, I got big flavors of molasses, toffee, raisin with lighter flavors of dark chocolate and cinnamon.  More than one of the guys stated they tasted port but I'm not experienced with that.  I was never interested in purchasing a Utopia before but I am now.  It was exceptional.

You need to start looking for an excuse to drink it.  Like crawling out of bed or something like that.
