Wanted to try this one after hearing it was discontinued. Glad I did, but I won't miss it. For me it was overpriced and just "ok".

^^^^ Although I do enjoy and quite like SAOS 7 year bourbon, I frankly think that the SAOS 7 year rye is pound for pound the better whiskey at that price point (similar, high $30's and low $40's).  Of course, both are generally discontinued, and you need to like rye and be ok with the LDI/MGP profile, but I think the rye is top top notch.

Finished this wonderful bottle. Binnys barrel pick, 12 yrs 3 mo. Lotsa toffee, honey, a little leather & mint. Got another barrel pick in the larder, that one 12 yr 7 mo. And theres a few more different 12+ yr picks, should get them before their gone.

I very much agree. SAOS is, so far as I can tell, much better than your typical non-finished MGP rye. I've tasted other good examples, and I do like the MGP profile generally, but it seems the SAOS barrel selection was really top-notch here. For whatever reason, the dill note is toned down as compared to every other MGP variant, and a lovely light smoky flavor replaces it. The standard release is very good, and the barrel proof variant is one of my all time top 10 bottles. 

 

The only other time I got that smoky note from an MGP is WPOW, but the MGP flavor is masked with other barrel finishing. And the only 100% MGP rye I like as much as SAOS is AE Rye, but again it uses the finishing crutch. 

 

I spend much of the early part of this year collecting and drinking (I'm not good at bunkering) all the SAOS ryes I could find after I heard they were phasing out.

I will be on the lookout for those. I do enjoy the MGP 95 rye profile, especially the James E Pepper 100 proof version (over Bulleit and Dickel).

I love "archiving" samples of great bottles. Lets them come back from the dead later.

I bought several small glass bottles with wooden corks from specialty bottle about a year ago. I didn't buy them for long term storage. Just to fill up & give people that don't get LE's a chance to have something unique over the holidays.

 

What type of bottles do y'all store these samples in? Also what methods do y'all use to insure that the quality of the whiskey stays good? Just curious? I might want to save some sample bottles for the future also.

I bought several small glass bottles with wooden corks from specialty bottle about a year ago. I didn't buy them for long term storage. Just to fill up & give people that don't get LE's a chance to have something unique over the holidays.
 
What type of bottles do y'all store these samples in? Also what methods do y'all use to insure that the quality of the whiskey stays good? Just curious? I might want to save some sample bottles for the future also.

I typically use a 4 oz bottle with a plastic, not paper seal under the lid. It seals good as far as I can tell, however, I also wrap lid with paraffin wax. I'll send you some pics later. I'm home alone with a screaming baby and don't have time at the moment. Cheers.

Same as Gonzo. Except usually 2oz Boston Rounds. Just make sure you fill to the top-no headspace. Store in a cool dark place(or at least out of direct sunlight). They should keep as long as needed and taste very similar to the day you poured them.  I've got some fun ones stocked away to enjoy long departed favorites(e.g. JPS18) that I will probably never see again.

How do you guys find the plastic/rubber seals on the little bottles to hold up long term? I use boston rounds myself with the seal lids for short term use with no problems, but I wonder how these would work for longer term storage, especially with valuable rare whiskies.  I guess I'm a little afraid to deviate from the tried and true corks or hard plastic screw tops until I hear from fellow bourboners that have proven results.

If I stored them upside down then I'd be concerned. But the whiskey is not in contact with the cap liner so they should be fine. And I'm not planning to store them for decades. I think your concern is valid for shipping as the paper can degrade with longer term contact. So buy the hard plastic lined caps just so you can use them for storage or shipping.

Emptied this private select RR SiB.  It started off slow but got better and better, until all gone.  I have one more from the same selection. Initially when I opened this bottle I didn't think this particular barrel was special enough to warrant more bottles from the same barrel, but now I'm not so sure....
