Cracked a Stagg jr. 132.5 for the first time tonight. WOW, incredible, full of flavor and wasn't near as "hot" as I was expecting.

GD 12 along with the occasional WR was a whiskey I consumed many bottles of over the years. Once I relocated to GA and my options exploded I began my journey through the various bourbon distillers and brands. A couple years back I noticed the GD label changing and decided to pick one up since it had been years since I had any and I dug the old label, it sat until last night.

I was curious to see what I would think of the flavor profile now that I have explored so many others and have several established favorites. I also had a GD 9YR 103p that I had purchased last year and while the vitamin note many refer too never put me off or called attention in the GD12, it sure did in that 9YR so I started getting very curious as to how the old favorite would fare.

I am delighted to say it held its own quite well and I am thoroughly enjoying this visit with an old friend. I much prefer this to the 9YR I had and as fond as my memories are of all those GD12s of old I think I hold it in even higher esteem now as I am still a fan after the prolonged hiatus. A unique flavor profile but one which clearly resonates with me.

 

Great thread idea as it played a hand in prompting me to open this bottle. My curiosity has turned to a celebratory pour as I reacquaint myself with one of my all time favorites and the fond memories it brings back.

Cracked open my last bottle of MM46CS last night.  I had been holding off on opening it, since I'm not sure if it will be generally available or not, and I only got 2 bottles at the distillery last year.  I do really like the nose on this one.  It smells just like birthday cake to me.

Opened blantons sftb today. Tried it neat and diluted down to 93 proof to compare to blantons. My first impressions are that I prefer the neat to the dilution and normal blantons to dilution for whatever reason. Will spend more time with this tho to confirm. Research beckons.

I've opened a few bottles this past week:  Knob Creek 2001, Smooth Ambler Single Barrel 10 year (46.1 ABV), Springbank 16 Local Barley.  It feels really good to open a bottle!  I am using the private preserve spray to keep the opened bottles fresh---have probably 50 open?

Getting low on open (and closed for that matter) bottles that are 100 proof or under (almost stop to buy a few bottles to remedy that earlier but resisted) so I grabbed a standard 4RSiB from the basement.  Tasty as I remembered (killed a 4RSmB recently) and it will join his big brothers OESF and OESV in the upstairs cabinet now.

Back to raiding/culling out the bunker.  I opened an Old Ezra 7 year 101 proof I had picked up in KY some time back.  It really reminds me of Evan Williams.

I'm down to only a couple of open bottles at the moment. When they're finished, I had planned on opening a few different BIB's. I'm thinking about changing things up though. The weather here has been unsettled to say the least. Cold, then hot, then cool, then hot again, then so-so, then hot yet again.  It appears that the hot weather may be here to stay for the next couple of weeks though, other than for one day. With temps in the mid/upper 80's to low 90's, I think I might have to lighten things up a little by opening a few 90 proofers. I'll probably got with BT, ETL, and Weller SR. However, I do have a handle of Old Forester BIB that's been calling my name for quite some time now. I might have to finally give in to the angel/devil on my shoulder(s) with that one.  Sucks don't it?

First time I ever saw the 1792 Port wood cask in my area. Grabbed one and opened it as soon as I got home. Pretty good stuff. Will stash it in the back for fall to finish it.

I actually just opened my 1792 Port Finish the other night, and I agree, it is pretty good.  I picked up my bottle a few months ago at release time, and left a few on the shelf.  In retrospect, I should have bought a couple more, as it is a nice change of pace, and was reasonably priced around $35.  Oh well.

I don't think this was a one-off release, so you should have other opportunities down the line.

Thanks, we'll see.  I'm fine without it, but wouldn't mind another one if I came across one.  Though I thought that Port was rather limited, whereas Sweet Wheat (which I never saw on the shelf) was coming back around.

Here's the presser from the Port release.  I guess they said they are "considering" future batches.  Probably depends on how sales of the first batch went, which I'd assume were pretty solid given that any halfway LE bottle pretty much flies off the shelf (except WT LEs that is).

Not today, but I cracked open a couple of bottles recently: SA Old Scout 10 yr SB a couple weeks ago and Michters Rye Barrel Proof last weekend.  I normally prefer original distilled products but both of these taste so good to care. 2 great examples ... possibly the best NDP whiskeys I've had (?).

I opened a perviously mentioned bottle of BT today.  To paraphrase a saying our old bowling team (Vosgar) used to use, "Good as it ever was."

I opened a 1L bottle of Cabin Still that I've had probably 10 years.  Another bought in KY just because we don't get it locally.  I paid like $10 for a 1L, aged 36 months, 80 proof.  I think sourced from HH.  It's a little sweet, no rough edges.  I'm actually surprized how good it is for being basically bottom shelf.

I cracked open an Old Fitzgerald Bottled In Bond today. I finally tracked one of these down on a trip to KY earlier this week. It's pretty good. I wasn't expecting anything fantastic, and I do think it's nice. Some sweet cinnamon wheat bread on the nose. I like it better than a few other BIBs I have.
