good luck finding any.

I've seen VW 12 year on a shelf, but not any ECBP at all this year...or even last year.

Not really.  IMO, this label has been mind numbingly consistently great with each release.  The bottle of 136 that I'm working hit me as super spectacular (but, upon thinking about it, I realized I felt that way about all of them at one time or the other ), and I attribute that as more a function of my tastes being primed for it, than this particular batch being "better" than any of the others.  I did buy another when I saw one, but I don't think I've never not bought one when I saw it...

Heaven Hill tasting team is totally dialed in on profile for this label.  They're 12 for 12, with all Home Runs.  One of the great runs in LE release history...

What was shaping up to be a rather bleak LE season has turned out pretty well for me. Once again proving that relationships matter, a store that I had high hopes for, that then didn't look good due to orders from higher ups, came through for me with a Stagg. Even though this is the lowest rated Stagg perhaps ever I'm still pretty jazzed to pick one up because this is my all time favorite whiskey. A 'bad' Stagg should still be a superior whiskey. When I went to pick it up I was surprised to see EHT Barrel Proof sitting on the shelf so one of those also came home with me. (I left two on the shelf).

Winter seems to have arrived a little bit early in the greater KC area so my tastes have really taken a turn towards 100 proof and more pours. The KC holiday package of a 750 ml and two rocks glasses was today's choice. It had the age statement and a bit of a burn that I must have forgotten over the past month or so while I investigated other bottles.

Managed to get a WLW and a Saz 18 to accompany my GTS, which I'm pleased about.

Also bought a Blanton's SB, which will be my final purchase for the year, and for the forseeable...

Cheers all!

With all the ECBP talk I did a quick inventory.

Batch 5 (134.8) - 2 sealed

Batch 6 (140.2) - 2 sealed

Batch 8 (139.8) - 3 sealed / 1 open

Batch 9 (135.6) - 1 sealed

Batch 10 (138.8) - 2 sealed

Batch 11 (139.4) - 2 sealed

Batch 12 (136) - 2 sealed / 1 open

There are various empties in the back, from Batches 5 -12. I know there's more empties somewhere.

Cheers, Jeff

Your the ECBP God! Enjoy! I still have closed: 1 Batch 6, 1 Batch 10, and now added the 1 Batch 12, and an open Batch 6.

It's getting harder here, believe me - not expecting to get any next year. Two of my usual go-tos have let me down this year, allocations halved left and right.

Honestly, I don't have a favorite. I really did think quality would drop when HH said they were bottling more ECBP. It didn't though. The latest batches are just as stellar as the early batches. Like smokinjoe said above. HH is dialed in on the ECBP profile.

Looks a bit like my inventory in reverse and perhaps a reflection of my admittedly very, very slow approach towards "bourbon zen". When I started in earnest ECBP was something you got from the HH gift shop in Bardstown (or as a special barrel pick from the GBS! B)).

Then when it first arrived on the shelf I had to have at least one bottle from each batch (multiples if possible of course) so I could compare and contrast each batch. But soon it became apparent that

1) They were all pretty damned good as has been previously noted and

2) As it became a bit harder to acquire and the price spiraled upwards I became less interested in scrambling to find them.

Now I will certainly pick one up if I see one and the price is reasonable (I think I stumbled across a batch 12 at retail recently and the hype led me to add it to the pile) but I haven't gone out of my way to hunt for them since about Batch 8.

I will somehow just have to make do with the dozen or so I have left! :D

Yesterday I picked up a bottle of Angel's Envy (yes, I know, not technically a bourbon) on the recommendation of a friend. I have to say, it was quite delightful. Incredibly different from any other bourbon I've had. It definitely doesn't replace "real" bourbon for me, but it fills a niche I didn't know needed filling.

It is pretty definitely technically a bourbon. Just happens to be finished in port barrels. Just as a Scotch is still a Scotch if it is finished in something but otherwise meets all the requirements to begin with.

Says as much on the bottle. "Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Port Wine Barrels"

As one of our resident Bourbonians of the Year noted in a comment on his blog from a couple of years ago:

You can't unring a bell. Once it's bourbon, you can't unbourbon it. If you do something to bourbon, then it becomes 'bourbon and' or 'bourbon with.' The bourbon component is still bourbon.

In this case it happens to be bourbon "finished in".

The GBS pick got me thinking. Why won't HH do this with some of their store pick programs?

Let's say the barrel weighed in at 135-140 proof. Standard proof is 94. You'll lose roughly 30-35% of your bottles from not being proofed down. Average price for standard proof is $27? 24 here, but let's say 27. Twice that would be $54.

These would probably be excellent honey barrels. 8-12(maybe older) year whiskey. All good strong proofs.

Revenue:

To make things easy. Same amount of whiskey.

(65-70)x($54)=$3,510-&3,780

(100)x($27)=$2700

Cost Decrease:

Less bottles

No need to cut (Labor)

Packaging

Freight

Etc. (ya get my point)

I think most of us would happily pay $54 for these? HH would increase revenue & decrease cost. They could use the existing ECBP front label & make a slight change to the back label. No expense there really. This just makes a lot of sense for everyone to me. And it would help alleviate the current ECBP situation.

A nice pour of ECBP later this evening sounds good to me!
