smokinjoe
just wanna commend the liberal usage of Bambi.and yeah, thinking the name did it no favors and ECBP, well...also heard theres some pretty major batch variance going on here. All that being said its plenty good enough stuff. Is there a listing of batch numbers somewhere that can tell us which are good, and which are not good? MyOldKyDram
Nah and it could be a load of hooey. There isn't even any batch info to be found on the bottle at any rate that I can see.

bigtoys
finally got Jr. Opened a fresh GTS, too, tonight. Have an old Bookers in the bar. A friend came over and we compared. Jr is definitely worth it. a little sweetness up front; maybe not as strong and smooth as GTS, but way better than Bookers that had a strong, unpleasant alcohol taste. smokinjoe
I had an opportunity to spend some time with this today. No, don't call this Bambi. Ruttin' Young Buck, is more like it, I think. There ain't nothin' doe eyed with skinny legs, and big eyelashes about this whiskey. If GTS is the regal and distinguished head of the BP herd, then Stagg Jr. is that young buck feeling his oats. Where GTS's monstrous qualities are seasoned with 16+ years of aging, and astute barrel selection at BT, the Stagg Jr. is just a precocious youngster ready to lock horns. He's just not his daddy, but he's not supposed to be, is he...Fiery, young, unpolished, and brash. But, as I think Sean alluded to, there are some things in this whiskey that give notice to its exquisite lineage. Nice nose, that does well with a few minutes for the heat to waft off from the glass. Then, there is some very nice brown sugar, toffee, butterscotch, and even slight cherry notes over the palate. Big rye kick throughout. The finish is rambunctious, too. One last gore from the rack.$50? Worth every penny to me. You want to compare it unfavorably to ECBP? Fine. That's OK, and I probably won't argue with you. But, this is a fine, whiskey in itself. I'll say this, some similarly aged 4R barrel proof selections are wonderful whiskies that rightfully get a lot of love on these boards. But, I would take this Stagg Jr. over a couple of those... Running him next to ECBP is tough though. ECBP simply has to be one of the most notable releases of the year. Running in the tier below the best is nothing to be ashamed of. MyOldKyDram
Thanks for the notes and glad you liked it! Don't think I've written anything here about it, actually. Shared my impressions w some friends though. Much the same as yours. Maybe not quite as enthusiastic, but I got a lot of the same out of it. The nose is pretty great. And I definitely get the cherry note, along w a bit of chocolate. I will add that it kinda fell apart w water for me, and found the finish to be little more than hot and dry. Still, far from the trainwreck many early reviews made it out to be. I'd prob give it a solid B.

Yeti
Sounds like there's a good chance this will roll into WV tomorrow. I'm planning to give it a try and see what happens. Worst case scenario, it ends up on the Gazebo table. Best case scenario, it doesn't last long enough to end up on the Gazebo table.

msong
I just got my bottle yesterday and tried it, solid B+. I like to pour my dram and let it sit for 5-10 min before drinking. Great nose, bit harsh on the body on the first sip but finish was better. Not sure if I got used to it quickly or not but second sip was much better. I usually drink GTS neat. I then tried it with a little water and liked it even more. Overall would grab if you see it on the shelf for MSRP, but probably wouldn't go too out of my way to find this one. jfw
I agree with the other reviews. The nose is wonderful. It has a LOT more heat than GTS does generally (the same kind of heat that I get from ER 10). I couldn't drink it neat either. Let it sit and add a bit of water and it's a solid pour. A lot more caramel shows up and you can see it's a relative of GTS. It's good, but certainly not in the class of GTS. I did a side by side with WT RR Barrel strength and the WT has a lot more balance and would be my choice of the two.I'm glad I picked up a few, but I personally think they should have named it something else.Talking to a local retailer, he said it should hit the shelves in MD this week. cnybrbnhntr
I emailed BT when I first heard of this release. They finally got back to me and said it is not being released in New York State. Very disappointed as I thought part of the reason they did this was to make it available to the masses.
