Lawrenceburg Distilleries: Wild Turkey and Four Roses

I will post more later on after I get home. Today, Fifeman and I went to Wild Turkey and Four Roses Distilleries in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Afterwards, we ate at Bourbon Street on Main.

Here are some pics of our tour guide at Wild Turkey. She was nice enough, but she seemed more like someone who leads tours for a paycheck as opposed to distillery tour guides who have an inherent passion for the bourbons and distilleries. I did not retain her name. She was certainly easy on the eyes, though.

Now, here are a few pics of our tour guide from Four Roses. Her name is Heather. Now, she was absolutely fabulous. She started off by comping my tour (due to my line of work). Then, during the tour she was very energetic, engaging, funny, charismatic, and knowledgeable. She made sure to engage everyone. She also is able to discuss a wide range of bourbons (she and I talked about Very Old Barton, Old Fitzgerald, Kessler, and WT).

We couldn't see as much at Four Roses in regards to production as they are remodeling and expanding. I love the architecture at Four Roses, though.

I love old bourbon warehouses. They make me feel as tall as an NBA center, they feel great, and smell divine. Wild Turkey's warehouse did not disappoint.

The tasting at Wild Turkey was (in this order), Russell's Reserve Single Barrel, Rare Breed, Russell's Reserve Rye, and Wild Turkey Honey. I would have skipped the honey, and done the tasting in opposite order.


Heather had us step up to the bar for healthy pours during the tasting at Four Roses. Their order was Four Roses yellow label, Four Roses small batch, and Four Roses single barrel. She told which recipe they use for Four Roses single barrels (non store picks), but my ADD kicked in and a forgot (Fifeman has a near photographic memory, so he may remember). Anyway, Heather poured very generous pours, so I focused more on drinking and savoring than on picture taking. Oh, and she had some samples with us.

After the tours, we ate a Bourbon Street on Main in Lawrenceburg. I had a very generous pour of 1792 Full Proof. I spoke with the owner (who is originally from Lexington). He is working on getting more bourbons and showcasing more bourbons. All of the locals were drinking beer when we were there. The owner said that Wild Turkey and Four Roses do not yet give them any deals on bottles.

Nice pics.  Did they say when they would be finished with the renovations at FR's?  I've been wanting to do a distillery tour but would rather do it when they are open to see everything.  Pretty good looking shrimp Po  Boy.  Sounds like a fun day.

That's right. The standard single barrel at 100 proof is always OBSV. The private selection single barrels at cask strength may be any one of the ten, but should be labeled accordingly. 

 

The small batch is always a blend of OBSK, OESK, OBSO, and OESO.

Has anybody seen these for sale? Wild Turkey had these as part of their current line-up. I do not mix bourbon with Coke, but the WT 101 with cola intrigues me.

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. The WT 101 and cola is $4.59 a can. These must be very popular with so many varieties, and to be so expensive. I find it interesting that Eddie Russell's signature is on the WT with cola can, but Jimmy's signature is on the WT 101 with cola can. Vosgar, have you tried any of these?

We toured 4R last year, and also enjoyed that one.  I think 4R has some of the better guides.

 

We toured WT 2 years ago, it was late in the day after 3 other tours, my wife and I had a solo tour with the guide, and I spent more time talking Ky basketball than anything else.  That tasting room on the second floor is interesting, I also wondered how I could get into that room.

Fun indeed. I loved the charisma of Heather at Four Roses. I am a huge WT fan, but their Distillery experience felt very corporate to me.

 

I would love to have spent considerable time talking UK basketball.
