I had a bottle of Overholt from '53....damn, was it magical. I also have a bottle from '49 that I am waiting to open (I think the birth of my first kid is a good reason,) and just grabbed a '57 today...Broadford, PA Overholt is incredible stuff.

I got this bottle of Lot B 12 in a buyers raffle just before a dinner/ whiskey tasting with Julian this spring.

I have not tried one from the 60's, but the OO dusties would be my choice too! Nice collection you have there!

Help a rookie out?

Why are the older bottles so good? I thought the bourbon stopped aging once it hit glass. Not true? Is it a different process than today? I know our local bourbon hub Canon here in Seattle has some really old bottles and they charge an incredible amount for a dram. I always thought it was just exclusivity. Is it more?

Many opinions on that subject in this thread...

Prior to the distillerys becoming computer controlled Bourbon/Rye was mashed/distlled by long time distillery employees who in some cases were themselves the product of generations of distilling tradition. The human element created distinct personalities in the major House styles which are less apparent in the newer precisely controlled production whiskys.

Were they better? No, just different, the old practical distillers did what worked and were very good at their jobs but arguably we are better off now with our greater understanding of the process. I was around back then and while I enjoyed those whiskys I don't feel slighted in the least with what we have available today.

Please remember that I'm still a noob and frankly I just wanted to see if I could upload a pic. i won't even start to going into the details of just getting on the pc. I'm too old for all of this. Be gentle.

Okay, got to move the "bar" cabinet which is really just a converted old armoire. As seen here before I bought it, I added a shelf in the main compartment seen in the last photo.

The lady of the house said I can take over some shelves in the garage that we don't really use so I got everything out of the cupboards and closets and took the opportunity for a semi-organized photo shoot.

This is what I got.

Starting with non-whisk(e)y spirits

Then ryes

Then bourbons

Then Scotch

My dad dropped off an old metal utility cabinet from his office, so I put it straight to work.

Man has a gazillion dollar camera, takes a picture with a potato.

Nonetheless, looking mighty good!

Haha. It's at the office. Believe me, I'm getting the kids out for an over the top photo shoot with lighting and everything soon.
