Did some inventory last week to check on my stock of SA. Had a few more than expected, but that's okay.

I have basketball practice with the boys tonight & will drink several of these later. Did some inventory last week to check on my stock of SA. Had a few more than expected, but that's okay. 90% of these are top notch barrels that I bought a bottle of, then went back for multiples over the last 3 years. I learned the hard way at the beginning of this journey, by buying multiples before tasting.

Cheers,

Jeff

How did one of the standard 7 year bottles make it in that group of single barrels and store selects?

Kinda starting on this bottle, nice sweetness, at least compared to the 1870.

Funny you ask... I was told about a barrel of SAOS11 that was just great (left pic). For some reason most the 11 year bottles just lacked the depth of the 10 year bottles. Not this one. Bought a case!  Have 2 bottles left. Worth every penny! Anyways... Several small batches were in the store when I picked up the SAOS11.  A trusted source told me to pick up Batch #184 (right pic), because there had to be some old whiskey in this batch & that it was very tasty. And that was 100% the truth. It was just so good. Ended up buying 2 cases of Batch #184 & wish I could have bought more. It was $32 per bottle after the case discount. Have 3 bottles left! To answer your question. It was a very rare find & I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

Cheers,

Jeff

I’m not po’d, just intrigued that someone had the wherewithal to buy all these while they were readily available. I used to walk by rows and rows of this stuff in various stores because I thought they were a little too pricey. I eventually picked up a few, but not until they started to get harder to find.

I too passed on a good bit initially. After hearing several others saying how good it was, I gave it a shot. SA did a great job selecting barrels & were selling them at affordable cost. If you search on SB there are several threads way back talking about MGP stock that SA had was running low. This happened to Willet long before. Can't say any names, but there are several guys that have more stock of this than I do. If one was able to buy 4 bottles a month over several years & drink only 2 a month, then they would have a nice little stockpile. That's what I enjoyed about SA. I could drink them & put back some. I think more will be available in the future, but they will be more expensive. It's not there fault though. MGP barrels started costing more. Like 2-3 times more. So NDP have to increase their price too. I still enjoyed yearly LE offering like everyone else, but this was a chance to find honey barrels of whiskey without the chase. There are many other brands that still offer this. The biggest difference going forward will be how much you pay for them. Which will without a doubt be more.

OK; not actually Bourbon (Mea Culpa); but, I did a SBSBS of Pikesville Straight Rye, Jack Daniels Straight Rye, and Baby Saz.

Not being that big a fan of ryes, I didn't expect my hair to be blown back . . . and, it wasn't.

My fave among the 3 was the Pikesville, though for easy drinking Baby Saz was nice.     The surprise (for me at any rate) was the JD.    It had the most 'rye character' of the 3.     ...And, it wasn't close.

I've been enjoying the JD Rye myself. I think it's a winner.

I thought it was the worst. I've never drank nail polish remover but I'd bet they're one and the same.

Yeah, I remember the threads that started talking about SA MGP stocks running low, and at about that point SA stated they were suspending some of their offerings. I finally started picking up a few single barrels and some of the regular 10yr, but didn't get that many before they went missing on most shelves. Lately, I've been picking up a few 10 and 11 year Belle Meade Single Barrel cask strength bottles in the low to mid $60 range since they've been putting out some good MGP stuff too. I don't think I'll buy that many since I like too many diverse things, but I'm bunkering a few.

With my limited experience, I feel like the pricing of some of the mgp single barrels are inversely proportional to quality (at least the ones i usually get from binnys), but they are all good

Best: SAOS $55

next: Belle Meade $70

Last: Redemption $90

I've only had Redemption CS Rye (the 7 yr is still around for between $65 & $70) and I have generally found it better than most of the SAOS I have had, but they have been awfully close. The only one of the three who I have owned bottles of Bourbon from is SAOS and there have been some duds mixed in, I've only had Belle Meade as a pour when I was traveling and the cost on the Redemption bourbons is out of whack.

The one common thing I see here more than price is that they are all single barrels. In an above post I mentioned that most the bottles I have were from really good barrels. There were plenty that were solid, but no multiples were bought. And several that just weren't up to par. That is what I like about single barrels. There are some true gems out there.

Enjoyed a pour of OWA 107 at the Sidebar before the U of L game last night.  They have a really good selection though some of their prices are a little .  Had some CEHT SmB while watching the playoffs the night before.  Bottle is getting a little low but not to worry, have two more bunkered.

Absolutely some variation in these particular single barrels, to be expected I guess considering the # of profiles mgp has and the large span of proofs for barrel proof ranging from low 90's to over 120 proof.  I love that they are right on the shelf ready to buy!

Never had the rye, but always hear good things about it

I should give this a try. Readily available and good juice from what I have been reading.

KS has a very oaky taste profile compared to many of the other WT products. So, keep that in mind if you're not a fan of a strong oak forward taste. I like it, but most of my favorite bourbons are at least 12 years old...YMMV.

It really is good, but it runs about the same price as RRSiB, ECBP, and Stagg Jr. so the competition is pretty stuff at that price point.

I have OGD114 coming out of my ears. Isn't distribution a funny thing?

Cheers!

That's so true. I remember some posters saying that they can't find any wsr, and that's available here now. We'll for now, let's see how long that lasts.

Btw not to be ignorant, but what does sbs stand for? I know it's some taste test.

Also finishing my last wsr bottle. I need to get some more.

I'm not able to come about WSR at a reasonable price around me at all.

SBS stands for Side-by-side. When you want to taste a couple pours side-by-side.

Cheers!
