Kane
FR = disappointment for me, always. This year it's three SPs: OESO, OESF, OESQ. Luckily I found the courage to pass on Al Young and 2017 SmB LE, and in hindsight, don't regret it one bit.

If 4-R isn't your thing, you should spend your available funds on ones that are in your wheelhouse. I hope you don't continue to be disappointed. Personally, I found the Al Young an excellent bottle. Very nuanced, and quite within my flavor preferences. But, as I said; different strokes for different folx. Pour what you like, and like what you pour. Life is too short to drink whiskey because someone told you it's supposed to be good. If it ain't good TO YOU; then it ain't good for you.

kevinbrink
Disappointment was in myself for buying a bottle of Jefferson's Rum Cask against my better judgement. Regret was not buying a bottle of Amrut Spectrum 004 for retail, passed on it 3 times and when I finally decided to cave it was gone.

I chose GTS (the cost for me was 125.00) and I just couldn't get the flavor out of it. I later had several pours of ORVW10 and really enjoyed it much better than GTS. However I have no regrets, as another poster said its only brown liquid, and I am still glad for the chance to own it and try it. And like you, I am still looking to get my hands on a bottle of the winkle family. I would never pay $499 for the ORVW, but thats me, if you do, please enjoy. " ....Nope - not gonna buy any ORVW or any other unicorn unless it's at MSRP. I learned a valuable lesson purchasing my first unicorn...they’re simply not THAT much better than standard good bourbon. I’ll save a TON of money and time drinking the available standards. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I agree. Iv'e been fortunate enough to get some good stuff at MSRP or slightly above, but nothing to high in price. I will say one of my current all time favorites is the PH 8 year (paid $110) malted bourbon/whiskey, as I said in another post I don't understand why it gets no love. super tastey. fosmith
My biggest disappointment of 2017 was HW Rendezvous Rye. Not even close to as good as WFE 3yr. Close 2nd was KC25th. Not a bad $50-60 bottle but no way worth twice that, IMO. Been pretty quick to pull the trigger on things I want to try so can't think of anything I wish I'd bought that got away. Except maybe another 2 bottles of K&L's recent KCSiB store pic. It was great!
jshleffar
OF 1920 for me, didn't enjoy one single bit of this.
Clueby
Reading this reminds me again how varied our palates are. I like WFE 3Y Rye..but it is young and brash and doesn't have near the refinement (to me) of a HWRR. OF1920 was probably the surprise hit of the year (again for me) and more than held its own against much higher priced LE bottles. Such a rich, decadent tasting bourbon.
Lance
woodford reserve for me, tried it a few years ago and didn't care for it but decided to give it a second chance recently. Had a couple of pours on different days and its still not for me, gave the rest to a friend.
bayouredd
I know it's pretty popular and it isn't bad, but the ER10 just didn't do it for me. It isn't what I want neat but, I do need to keep it around as my Wife & D-I-L thought it outstanding. That and Woodford seem to be the choices for my ladies... JTaylor
The Willett 80th and VOB 6 90 proof were the most disappointing... glad I didn't have much wrapped up in them. At $14 I didn't have much hope for the VOB, but with all the love the BIB gets I thought maybe I'd find it a good cheap mixer at least, but I didn't even like it with Sprite or Coke... AAA 10 Star fills that bill nicely though so I think I'm done experimenting with the bottom shelfers... I didn't pass on much last year, but of those I did pass on I can't really think of one I'm kicking myself over... OH, I did leave an ECBP C916 on the shelf in Mississippi (they had two, and I only bought one) that I almost immediately thought I should go back and get... but with all the LE's I was able to get in '17 I'll chalk it up to good bourbon karma for leaving that one ECBP and call 'er good! Caleb_the_great
Purchased a bottle of WSR and I really wasn’t a fan of it. Luckily it only cost me $18.

Tony Santana
I don't really regret buying anything. Not everything I bought was necessarily worth what I paid, but they were all at least decent, and a learning experience if nothing else. My only "pass" that i rue wasn't a bourbon - Glendalough 13 year Irish whiskey (I think only available overseas). Stellar. Fortunately my daughter picked one up for me for a Christmas gift. But I wish I had more.

lcpfratn
My most disappointing purchase in 2017 was the Woodford Reserve Masters Collection Cherry Wood Smoked Barley. I was a big fan of the 2016 Brandy Cask Finish, and had big hopes for the 2017 release, but it's just not a very enjoyable bourbon. I don't really have any real regrets, but I do wish I would have bought a case of an OWA PS when I had the opportunity instead of just buying a half case...it's really good! jackthedog
For me it was OF 1920 or WRDO. For the price, neither was particularly good for me. I had high hopes for both, especially the 1920, but I suppose it's just another example of differing tastes.

I think it is pretty universally preferred over WSR. Personally I don’t really care if I can buy much WSR or OWA on the shelf or not. I don’t really drink either neat very often, and if I want a wheated in a cocktail, Larceny in the $22 range around me works just fine.
ccleve23
The most disappointing bottle I bought this year was the Evan Williams Masters Blend bottle they had at the Evan Williams experience. What a horrible waste of 60 bucks. My biggest regret, maybe not picking up a couple more bottles of the SAOS 12 single barrel year I found. I was right. Can't think of any passes I regret at the moment. Admittedly I don't pass on a lot but I have passed on some this year and so far I am no worse for wear.
