Sorry for another secondary post but I am a sucker for history even if it's 8 years ago. I found this article interesting. Does anyone remember SB discussing eBay? Was there disdain for those involved and bottles being faked and refilled? I was unaware of this going on at the time.

Periodically, some discussions/mentions of the secondary market for distilled spirits have popped up on SB, and eBay and similar social and blog/sites/listservs with "resale" threads have been mentioned.  Because the SB rules discourage/forbid/condemn such because it is illegal to sell or buy or barter spirits (unless one is a licensed retailer of distilled spirits AND THEN are operating within applicable state and federal laws and regs), the discussions and mentions have not been "robust" because there's no point in most of us pursuing this activity in depth OR in ANY of us promoting or fostering it.  After all, secondary market sales by persons NOT in The Business is illegal at the Federal and State level; what's to be discussed?

 

An SB search of terms like "illegal" and "secondary" and "resale" and "flippers" and even "eBay" and "reddit" may turn up some of those discussions here.

 

RE: your question about ". . . disdain for those involved and bottles being faked and refilled . . ." -- Several of us here, particularly those of us who are lawyers, law enforcement personnel, persons working in the distilled spirits industry, etc., have attempted on many occasions to "educate" persons asking, "If I have this bottle, and I want to sell it, if somebody sends me a PM, what should I ask for it?" but not so clearly or in so many words OR in many other words, that doing so IS A BAD IDEA!  So, yeah, Flippers get a lot of disdain.  Refillers are just crooks.
