TheNovaMan
I have a vacancy on one of my bourbon shelves, and I'm looking for recommendations for a bourbon or rye to fill it. Here's the catch: the bottle can be a maximum of 9 1/8" tall, and I prefer to buy 750mL bottles (or larger, but that just isn't going to fit). It's replacing a Dickel single barrel, so I know that fits, but I wasn't crazy about either bottle I've tried. Knob Creek and Elijah Craig are currently the tallest two bottles on this shelf. Hmm, maybe I should try ECBP?

Hmm, maybe I should try ECBP? Vacancies are always annoying. You must fill it immediately. I don't know the dimensions of Dickel bottle compared to an EC. bottle, although they seem similar in height. If you haven't tried ECBP, it is available, and you are ok with the price, that would be a great option for filling that space. I have had several different batches over the years and, while a few took a little while to figure out, I have enjoyed all of them. I have found the last three batches, A119, B519 and C919 all enjoyable with C919 my favorite of the three. Hmm, maybe I should try ECBP? I am not a woody bourbon fan. BUT, the last three ECBP releases have tasted so good to me that I bought multiples at MSRP or on sale (mostly on sale right after each new release came out). I even ordered a couple prerelease and prepaid. I also like KC age stated (old or new) at or below $24 locally. Jefferson’s Ocean wheat was good, but I didn’t think it was worth a second bottle for the price. If you haven’t tried it, it is worth one bottle just to try it but maybe not two. ECBP, though, may cause you to clear some more shelf space.

I wanted to like EC18 but just didn't. I ended up blending EC18 and EC12 and it was really good. The last three ECBPs have been really good. A little oak but not as much as other batches. KC is always in my rotation. I have found that I enjoy the KC NAS as much as I used to enjoy KC 9. But, it may be because my tastes are not as discerning.

That's a pretty glowing endorsement! I know I've read a lot of positive comments about some of the recent ECBP releases, so I checked my local favorite spot and the alphanumeric code was one of the "good" recent ones, so that's under serious consideration. 1 hour ago, mbroo5880i said: I have found that I enjoy the KC NAS as much as I used to enjoy KC 9. The KC on my shelf is a 9YO from quite a few years ago. At that time, there was only one KC, and I found it to have a somewhat sweet, apple-y taste that I quite enjoyed. I have no idea how it compares to any of the current KC expressions. Does anyone have a bottle of Pikesville rye they could to measure? mbroo5880i
Another option is Four Roses. FRSB and FRSmB tend to be shorter bottles.

Thanks for measuring, Gary! 22 minutes ago, mbroo5880i said: Another option is Four Roses. FRSB and FRSmB tend to be shorter bottles. Point well taken. I have a bottle of FRYB because I think it's the best 80 proofer on the market, and it was a gift from a friend. I've been resistant to their dizzying array of higher proof expressions because I know I'd NEED! (want) to collect all 10 recipes and every LE, and that would take a very long time, much effort, and quite a bit of money... and also shelf space that I don't have. There are other major distilleries that aren't represented at all in my library, like Woodford. In general, I find their stuff is overpriced for what it is, at least in Michigan, but that seems like a deficiency in my collection. How tall is their bottle? Richnimrod
Pete, if you haven't tried it yet, do yourself a favor and grab a Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof. This is absolutely the best whiskey to come out of Lynchburg in . . . forever? The bottles are right about 9" tall, too.

I think the only 750 that's going to work for you is Knob Creek so I would suggest the Single Barrel Reserve, particularly a store pick. Or Knob Creek rye, the single barrel or cask strength versions if you can find them.
BottledInBond
Wouldn’t Rare Breed also fit? Obviously a little harder to find, to varying degrees, but the mb2 gang is pretty short, so Blanton’s, ETL, RHF, HPR

RHF is such an attractive bottle I may have to break down and buy one. 1 hour ago, Vosgar said: Of the bottles on my bar, ETL, RHF and Jefferson Rye are all under 9". Vosgar
Hey Pete - Knowing your love of Scotch and all things from The Darkside, I checked and yes, any of the wonderful bottles from "That Boutique-Y Whisky Company" will fit on your shelf. Sure, they're only 375ml but are colorful as well as offering whiskies from a number of distilleries. What more could a guy ask for? Always willing to help you out buddy!

Two thoughts, Pete: 1) the JD Barrel Proof is an entirely different animal, and to my taste buddies EXCELLENT stuph! Don't sleep on this one! I've had 4-different ones and every one was stellar! 2) If you haven't had the 1792 BIB, you are missing some of the best stuph coming out of Barton/1792. Rich, mouth-coating and complex; wonderful, if a bit overpriced in comparison with many BIB's... but, on the other hand it is head and shoulders better than most of 'em, so maybe not that 'overpriced'.....
