Clay34
As a guy who has been chasing different bourbons for about a year, I really enjoyed this recent video by Mash and Drum. It puts some things in perspective for me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaw-JCoVhUw&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR1kbjD79TRFddgAuPfGDo8QKR5_VZKb6fCgG90L1YJxc0dXqwmYtnlOwv8 Edited August 9, 2020 by Clay34
miller542
Thanks for sharing this. Agree and have felt the same way for about 5yrs now. RRsib, 1920, ECBP, and others just makes anything over $75 difficult to justify. The WT decades and Little Book Ch3 I bought were both tough to reconcile mentally based on price even though both are really good.
smokinjoe
OK, but I get my eye roll and smirk going when I hear any bourbon blogger go into what’s happening in the secondary market and assigning his “worth” to the pricing there. Once it’s there, it’s worth whatever anyone wants to pay for it. This guys, yours, or my opinions on what any of us should/would pay means very little.

Aside from the 'bourbon boom' thread one of the reasons I enjoy visiting this place is because there's very little talk about the secondary market. Most blog/review sites can't go a day without talking about it and frankly, it's hard not to assume that those with such an in depth knowledge of it are probably part of it.

smokinjoe
Just now, flahute said: Hahahaha! I was going to delete this until I saw the Harry Jedi level edit explanation. Thanks! Luckily, there was no audio involved as I screamed and flailed like a 6 year old... then looked at my screen and gave a healthy WTF?
Clay34
I was thinking about this thread this afternoon and wanted to try and tap into the wisdom and knowledge here. Please give a bourbon that you think is over-hyped / Over-Priced. Then an example of what you find as a reasonably priced great buy. I'll start off from my personal purchases. I bought a $100 bottle of Bookers Kathleen's batch. I probably paid too much for it. I've been enjoying Knob Creek 9 year stuff and find it a value in under $50 / bottle stuff. Lately some of this value stuff is relative. As an example I think that I have three bottles of Eagle Rare in the bunker. I've passes up a number of bottles at or over $40, but when I find them for $28, I'm a buyer. I also think that I could live the rest of 2020 in the sub $50 range and buy two bottles instead of paying a goofy premium of over $100 bottle. OF 1920 is on the list of pours that I will buy within the next week.

Very informative and concise talk. He's pointing out the circus of the secondary market, not encouraging it. For myself, I'm not planning on paying over $60 for anything anytime soon. Lots of knowledgeable and experienced folks here. Lets see what others have to say.
Richnimrod
I won't bother with listing any that I find over-priced... since there are so damned many of 'em! I will however, name one I find reasonably priced: Wild Turkey 101. It has been very nice and pretty consistent over the last couple years or so... and even when it was somewhat less satisfying than it currently is for a year or two, it was still pretty good and absolutely worth the coin asked. I could make a case for Old Grand Dad BIB, as well as OGD 114, too. The 114 went through a period where the price shot up and it was harder to find; but returned to Earth pretty much, and is now back within the range I find reasonable for the product. The BIB is QUITE reasonable for the quality delivered (in most markets).
Mako254
For reasonably priced, ECBP might be the king. In my market it is abt $65. For a 12 year old, NCF, barrel proof bourbon. same for russells, though generally 8-10 yrs and you are giving up some proof. Campari has a strong presence in SC and we get 30+ barrels a year so it is certainly available. For over-priced, anything that costs more than ECBP and can’t hang with it.
PaulO
I watched the whole video. I believe Jason's assessments to be spot on. The one area where we may differ, he would pay more than I would for some items. There are also several brands he would buy at some price that I simply avoid.
