Bourbon Dessert Recipes

The “Southern Living” magazine Christmas issue arrived last week, and it has a several page feature on desserts made with bourbon.  The Vanilla Custard with Bourbon Caramel Sauce and the Butterscotch Bourbon Lava Cake look especially good to me!

Would you mind posting a picture of that custard/bourbon caramel sauce recipe?

I ended up making this with "meh" results.  The recipe, I think, is pretty good.  I failed in the execution.  I always run the smoker and grill and rarely am involved in dessert so both my experience and skill level in that arena is limited.  Basically my custard was not heated long enough and was just a bit runny.  The caramel sauce on the other hand I went a bit long and as a result it is very thick (think melted milk dud) so when you try to scoop the custard the caramel layer just gets pushed down.  Wife and I agreed flavors are there though.  I would attempt this, or something similar again.  Despite my end results the recipe itself was not very difficult. Although there was a lot of whisking.  I will post a picture later today when I am home.

Thanks for your feedback, Bob.  It certainly looks nice, particularly in that MM glass! If I don’t get sidetracked, I’m going to try this weekend.  I’ll keep your notes in mind on the timing aspects and it’s effect on texture.  Regardless, it sounds like it tastes good!  I’ll let you know how I fare.

I had one a few weeks ago that I was surprised to find a Costco.  Not bad at all.  Much better than I expected.
