# Extending the C–K design theory: A theoretical background for personal design assistants

@article{Kazaki2005ExtendingTC, title={Extending the C–K design theory: A theoretical background for personal design assistants}, author={A. O. Kazakçi and Alexis Tsouki{\`a}s}, journal={Journal of Engineering Design}, year={2005}, volume={16}, pages={399 - 411} }

The C–K theory is a recent theory of reasoning in design. Despite many practical applications, the theory has not yet been operationalized in the form of a computational design tool. In this paper, we argue that, in order to build such tools, a third space—an environment space E—must be introduced to the theory. Therefore, we extend the C–K design theory, using ideas and principles from situated cognition. As we discuss, the new version provides a theoretical background for building personal… Expand

C-K design theory: an advanced formulation

- Computer Science
- 2008

This work shows that C-K theory captures the generation of new objects and new knowledge and offers a rigorous definition of Design, and interprets Braha and Reich’s topological structures for design modelling as special assumptions about the stability of objects in space K. Expand

A model of K space is given based on a term logic, NAL, and it is described how to interpret the key notions of C-K theory within the framework of NAL. Expand

Design as Forcing: Deepening the Foundations of C-K Theory

- Computer Science
- 2007

The correspondence between C-K theory and Forcing, a method of Set theory developed by Paul Cohen in 1963 for the “invention” of new sets is established and the deep relations between the two approaches are shown. Expand

Towards an ontology of design: lessons from C–K design theory and Forcing

- Computer Science, Mathematics
- 2013

This paper derives such ontology from a comparison between formal design theories developed in two different scientific fields: Engineering and Set theory and interprets Forcing, a technique in Set theory developed for the controlled invention of new sets, as a general design theory. Expand

Is "Creative Subject" of Brouwer a Designer? An Analysis of Intuitionist Mathematics From the Viewpoint of C-K Design Theory

- Computer Science, Mathematics
- 2009

It is argued that, even though the concept space of C-K theory is not explicitly represented, Intuitionist Mathematics authorize, and even welcome, concepts and the reasoning process of the creative subject implicitly makes use of them. Expand

Idea-configuration-evaluation (ICE): development and demonstration of a new prescriptive model of the conceptual engineering design process based on parameter analysis and C–K theory

- Computer Science
- 2018

The paper describes in detail the process of developing the new model, which was similar to product development, and started with conceptualization in order to define a set of key factors and principles, i.e., the conceptual foundation or the “ideology” of the new prescriptive model. Expand
