BDanner
As an avowed Cascade Hollow Fanboy, I don't understand why in the world anyone would pay $26 bucks for a bottle of 80 proof Jack Daniels when they could take that same money and get 90 proof Dickel No. 12 for the same price, or 80 proof Dickel No. 8 and save $10. Both are vastly superior IMHO. The new "Bourbon" is also very good and priced well for an 8 year age stated whisky. I did find that time open does bring some of that vitamin note that some find offensive. The BIB's have all been hits, though the recent price jump here from $36 to $50 was not a welcome development. The Barrel Select and the 9yr Store picks are also very good. The only Dickel Whisky I've had that I didn't like was the 15 year Single Barrel at around 80 proof. It is damn nigh undrinkable. I'm hoping that I just got an off barrel as I have a couple other bottles at higher proofs that I pray are better. I've got a 15yr SiB that's 96.2 proof and it's delicious. A friend gave me a sample of a low 80s proof barrel he had and it was actually better. Just as much flavor but smoother as well. Yeah, I hate that description but by that I mean that the flavors have no sharp edges. I've never had a low proof bourbon deliver so much flavor though. Like eating cake..

Mine tastes like an old toothpick dipped in lemon pledge. My barrel is definitely off.

(Yes, they don't use an 'e') I complain about that vitamin note. Well I'm here to admit that I found one I like. I just returned from a Kentucky/Tennessee trip doing various barrel picks and I made my first ever visit to George Dickel Distillery and did my first ever barrel pick there. The distillery itself was not open to tours so we only saw the outside. (Small, but pretty cool looking if you like that industrial look as I do). (Also, the distillery is usually open for tours but not during covid as they can't risk a positive test in their workforce which will shut down production for a period of time.) In fact, everything was shut down to the public so we were the only people there. We tasted through 8 samples - four of them were 9yr 100 proof, the other four were 15+ yr at barrel proof. We tasted blind as we always do. Out of the 8 I only got the vitamin note on 2 of them. I did discover that one of my friends is more sensitive to the vitamin than I am as he tasted it on more of them including the winner. (For the record, he likes it so it's not a negative to him.) I was really impressed by what I was tasting. In the end we chose a winner - sample #7 - and it was revealed to be a 17+ yr bourbon at 96.2 proof. I took a sample bottle home with me and tried it the next morning on a fresh palate to confirm and oh boy, all coconut cream pie on the palate and finish. So there it is..........I like Dickel. Nobody tell Jeff or smokinjoe because they will say "told ya so!" I cannot believe I missed this…so let’s get this out of the way first…I told ya so! Were any of the barrels you sampled from their alternative 70% corn mash bill? The vitamin note is definitely less pronounced in that mash bill for some reason. Blue Note really enhanced their national reputation by sourcing a lot of the 70% corn mashbill barrels from them, but apparently Dickel figured out what a good thing they had, so that source has been cut off. I’m not sure if that’s what they’re using in their new 8yr bourbon offering or not, but I suspect that it might be.

They claim that it's the same mash bill as their standard TN Whiskies and selected from the same barrels used for No.12 and No.8. I was hoping for an alternative mash bill, or the same mash bill sans Lincoln County Process. Still, 8 year Age Stated Dickel for mid 30's price tag is a winner for me.

These were all standard mashbill.
