Yes, what @Anwalt asked. A few stores in my area have it. One store had private picks of regular and wheated.

Biba! Joe

Please see my response to Anwalt.     The pick I have is a single barrel and it has a higher malt mashbill, so I can't speak to the wheated version.     The bottles that I have are a pick from a buddy whose palate aligns closely with mine.     Aren't you the resident Weller Whore?  If so, you may lean towards the wheated version, but I haven't tried it.   Hopefully, the store will let you try them both.

I liked it so much that I bought a 2nd bottle.   The caveat here is that this is a single barrels pick that a buddy of mine did, whose palate aligns very closely with mine.    I've never had their standard offering.   It's an MGP distillate  I read that Greg Metze worked for MGP for something like 40 years.  At one point, before he started working for Old Elk, he worked with Old Elk to *"create unique mashbills and and distill whiskey's specifically for them"    The bottle states "Greg's Picks"   Greg is my buddy who picks these, and not to be confused with the distiller, who is also named Greg.😉

Now that I've bored you with that, as far as the whiskey goes, it's very good.   It's a high malt i.e. 34% mashbill which, ordinarily, gives me pause, but it doesn't undercut the spice or overly mute the caramel and whatever else is going on, (sorry...I'm not very descriptive.....I recognize and appreciate the nuances of what I'm tasting, but have a difficult time putting it into words).  The bottom line is that  I trust my buddy and all of his picks have been firmly in my wheelhouse.   His is one of the few picks that I'll buy without trying first.   I was waffling on this one, (because of the aforementioned malt....if I want malty, I'll pour scotch), but as soon as I tasted it, I I bought that 2nd bottle.

When these are gone, (and the price is right),  I wouldn't hesitate to buy one of their standard offerings.

Nothing boring there.  Good buddy to have!  If I may be so bold:  Are those picks still available?  I have learned that recommendations from people who know work out better.  Even better if palates are aligned, but we don't know each other quite that well!

I have a few store picked Old Elk's (straight bourbon Indiana SiB Select and wheated bourbon OE3 Wine World Select) recommended by friends whose knowledge surpasses mine (still a low bar, working on that).  Haven't gotten to them yet.  Still working on some of the other wheated bourbons and wheat whiskies.  I tend to open a few bottles and try them at different times to divine a pattern from my often inconsistent palate.  But these are on the list, hence the inquiry.

Thanks!

Had the KC9 that my son and I bottled on the tour.  It really is a good bottle, I now wish I'd bought more than 3, both for the taste and the memories.

Son has one, I opened one.  I think I'll leave the 3rd for when I pass with a note attached.  Hopefully that'll be in 30 or 40 years.

If you really want to go down the rabbit hole, here's the Chilean version (I married one, it is a different dialect):  Bailes mejor cuando 'stas curao, weon!

Thanks!

The barrel sold out, fast, sorry😔

You sound like me.  I open bottles,  then revisit them later.

I liked this one from the start.

I know a guy with Chilean cousins. Now I'm gonna have to start calling him weon. According to the Google definition, he will either be impressed or offended.

It's much like the F bomb and other naughty words in English.  It's totally in the tone & context.

"Let's get curado on bourbon weon!" probably would strike just the right note in writing.  If spoken, drop the "d" in curado & stress the final syllable - curAO.  Chileans (and Puerto Ricans) talk way too fast to be bothered with pronouncing consonants they deem unnecessary.  That's one way they can tell I'm not one of them - all the needless enunciation.

John J. Bowman Single Barrel is continuing to kill it for me.  The Rickhouse-on-a-hot-day wood notes from nose to finish are really spectacular.  Not many bourbons can pull that off, for me.  It’s usually, on the nose but nothing for the rest of the journey.  Or, nothing up front and over the palate, and then comes on at the finish.  This has it all the way through, and results in a very unique and extremely enjoyable whiskey.

KC12.  It's starting to grow on me.  A little time with a big ice cube smooths out what, for me, seems to be a bit much oak & tannin.  Can't leave the ice in for too long or it dilutes it too much though; this ain't no 120.  Starting to grasp some of the nuance & complexity, though I'm not yet comfortable naming what I think I taste.

But I still prefer the KC9 store picks (well, the ones that tend towards the sweeter side, a relative term with KC).

I haven't tried the KC15 yet.  If the 12 strikes me as a bit oaky, I suspect that the 15 may be a bit much of that for my taste.

MM101, some cinnamon apple chips from Aldi, and Seinfeld.

I highly recommend these chips with bourbon.

Apple and Cinnamon seem like a perfect pairing with bourbon!

I was actually going to ask the same question as @Anwalt.  I know I can Google this but I prefer to hear what member's of this community think and know about various bourbons.  Is the 34% high malt in the mashbill unique to your buddy's pick?  I see a lot of variations of Old Elk at various retailers and while I have been intrigued, I have yet to pull the trigger.  Have you had the standard offerings?  If so, which do you prefer?

I have had KC offerings from NAS to almost 15 years.  Most have been good to great.  I did have a KCSiB standard bottle one time that was really hot but that was the exception.  I don't care for an oaky profile in a bourbon so I thought KC12 might be iffy.  I found that I really like it.  It definitely has more nuance and complexity than KC9.  It better for a $20-30 per bottle premium.  I believe it is worth the price of admission for <$60.  It is one of the better newer offerings in the bourbon world over the last 5 years.  I prefer it over Blanton's or other widely sought after bottles.

The local grocer currently has a deep row for $56.99 before multiple bottle discount.  I am waiting for 30% but might end up biting for 15%.  They currently have a couple of other bottles of interest that I don't want to miss out on as well but I am patiently waiting for a sale.

Great minds think alike, except yours is a SB and BP while mine is the standard offering.  I will make up for it with a slightly larger pour.  😀

Outside of this one, I've never had any of their other offerings.

The way that I understand it, is that all of the single barrel picks have the same 34% malt in their mashbill.

I have more whiskey than I can drink in this lifetime so, with exception of restocking the standards, I stick to buying "special" bottles and picks.

That being said, if my cheap-ass came across a bottle on sale, I'd buy it.

Tonight it's been Bowman Bros. and Town Branch Single Malt.   The latter, which is 7 years old, is the first American malt I've tried that tastes to me  like "real scotch" (Speyside variety).

I'm with Ms. Wedel! Crazy ending to that race and Mercedes had the right strategy until the safety cars negated it. I also watched that football game - what an ending indeed.

Red Bull has such a strong car, matched to Max and they are unstoppable. He has a legitimate shot at winning every remaining race. I would not have thought that possible, but after what happened at Spa, anything is on the table for Max.
This time of the year is the best for sports. The MLB pennant races get tight, F1 races are great and my #1 sport,  College Football is getting started. All made better, with a nice whiskey in the glass. Now, WT101

Cheers

KC 12 for $56.99 is a very good price.  I would be stocking the bunker at that $..  I like that pour ..  Oh wait, I think I have said that before..

Tried the WSR based on the recommendation of someone here who said he liked it, hated it, and then came back to liking it over the course of time.  I've been in the "hating it" stage.  Had a few ounces last night, neat, it wasn't bad.

Finished with Rebel 10y. A few minutes with a big cube after trying it neat, probably got it down to 90 proof.  Liked it from the start and it continues to grow on me.
