Our 35th wedding anniversary is Monday but we started the celebration today. Went to one of the top restaurants in the Indy area with my wife, best man, his wife, maid of honor, her husband and my youngest son. We even allowed a local news celebrity to join us but we made her sit at the table next to ours. I paid for the wine for the night but my best man said all bourbon pours were on him. I am never one to take advantage of a friend so I was looking at KC9 until I saw they had HMcK10 for only $1 per pour. That was my pour. It was an excellent choice, or two, or three. My friend opted for KC9. He wanted a little more oak. The pours of HMcK10 were generous from the start but appeared to be more generous with each pour as it was obvious we were going to pop some $$$ tonight. Sometimes atmosphere dictates perception but the pours of HMcK10 were stellar. I would love to have a bottle for home, even if just to remember this evening. Bourbon + Friends + Atmosphere = Awesome. Home now and enjoying a couple of decent pours of New Riff. The HMcK10 was stellar but the New Riff is really hitting it as well. Tomorrow we hit it with my oldest son and his girlfriend. Then I am off work on Monday, my actual anniversary. I see a lot more nice meals, family and friends, and bourbon over the next few days. Happy Anniversary!

Joe Happy 35th Anniversary! Or Harry & Izzy's (St. Elmo's sister restaurant) just around the corner? Anytime we were in Indy for a swim meet (1992,1996, 2000 Olympic Trials and the first "Duel in the Pool" in 2003 dual meet with Australia at the IUPUI Nattorium, as well as many other National and International meets), we always made it to Harry and Izzy's - wasn't as crowded, maybe even a little cheaper back then, and they took us as a group of 20 0r 30 officials for a late weekday dinner (did we get too rowdy at our first dinner at St. Elmo's??? Memory is the second thing that goes when you get old)
flahute
The weekend before last I was at TW and saw that they had a WTKS private selection in stock. This is the first WTKS I've seen in over a year so even though I know better than to trust a TW pick I bought it anyway. Should have trusted my experience! It's not awful but it's also not great. It is not typical Turkey profile. If I dump a little WTRB in it that about gets it to where it should be. No more TW picks for me.
Jazzhead
I'll need to ease back into the week, but not just yet. Relaxing to jazz and a blend of 112 proof Rare Breed Rye and 90 proof Russells Reserve Rye. I dig the proof here, and the vanilla punch. I'll need to put this up against Pikesville, my gold standard for the Kentucky style.

Memory is the second thing that goes when you get old) Actually, neither. We went to Anthony's Chop House in Carmel. The food and pricing are comparable to both St. Elmo's and Harry & Izzy's. It is located along the Monon Trail which has a great atmosphere with a lot of restaurants and bars. Once parked, you can pretty much walk to everything. For that reason, we prefer that area to downtown Indianapolis unless we are going downtown for another event (e.g., symphony, play, sporting event). Peyton is a part owner of a few Huse restaurants (owner of St. Elmo's) including Harry & Izzy's and another restaurant/bar in Fishers. We also like Sullivan's on the northside, which was another favorite hangout for Peyton back in the day. Another Indy downtown staple is Shapiro's deli. Back in the day, the Colts coaching staff would often be there for lunch on Friday's during the season. @GeeTen I graduated from IUPUI. In it's day, the Natatorium was one of the premier swimming venues in the U.S. One of my bosses' wife is a bartender at St. Elmo's. I need to chat him up a little more to find out what high end bottles they have and what a brother has to do for a bourbon hookup. Tonight, I am finishing up the bottle of Yellowstone 93 while licking my fantasy football wounds. My team's failure today is directly traceable to the Colts face plant. I am a homer so my team is loaded with the Blue and White. The bourbon is good. Better than I expected. I would probably grab another for $24.99 but not a penny more. So, if it were $25, then no go.

I saw that at my TW and went back and forth before passing on it. Glad I did. I have a RR SiB TW pick that was really no better than the standard bottle. Maybe their taste and mine are not aligned. Hope your missus has a speedy recovery BTW.

It depends on the quality of the pickers at your TW but it sounds like they are no better than the standard product which is a no go since they charge way more for their picks than the standard issue. And my wife thanks you!

Actually sounds pretty good. 101 proof Turkey but a little less smack you in the face than WT101R and with a little more age and better barrel selection. I have been disappointed more often than not by TW barrel selections. Albeit, I have only two TW in my area. I suspect they just get samples and pick without much effort. With barrel selections, I believe local retailers where you know the owner or tasters are much more predictable.
mrray13
Bursting my FR cherry with a glass of SmBS. Was going to buy SmB, but the salesman suggested the SmBS, and am I glad I listened! There’s a nice cinnamon note to it that I just love, with a nice mellow yet spicy finish. Again, please forgive my descriptions, I am still learning.

I wonder if the big chain store pickers tend more to pick something they think will have mass appeal and just end up with something more generic. I bought a BevMo OF SiB pick a couple of years ago and was underwhelmed.
