Digging around the bunker earlier and came upon something I forgot I had.  So, opened up she is!  While I very much enjoy current EW, everything from nose to finish in this 7 yr 90 proof bottle is superior.   Particularly, the mouthfeel.  Heavy, while supple.  I also  love the Goetze’s Caramel Cream candy notes on the nose and palate. Wonderful whiskey.

Poured some WT101.  I'm thinking this would be on my short list of bourbons for a desert island.  I don't think that is an uncommon position around these parts.

I'm right there with you on that!

I had that two nights in a row.  It's really growing on me.  Gotta sit and re-compare it to the other two mainline 4R offerings.

Didn't you pick up some SBBP on the kentucky trip?  That's where it's really at!

This was the first bourbon I tried that I really liked.  ~$12 for a handle at the original Liquor Barn now Bevmo store store in Colma, CA, a repurposed Safeway store.  Many great wines purchased there but this bourbon amazed me with sweet caramel, brown sugar and candy corn.  I think I went through six handles before it went away.  Current EW. while good, is a shadow of its former self...

Yes.  Have another one waiting for me in Houston, TW has them, friend got one.  I'll need to open one or both of those during the 4R flight.  Looks like I'll need to google "flight combinations to try", both same brand but also "contrast & compare".

I can not think of a single instance where I've said to myself "you know what, the newer version is better."

Had the KC9 that my son and I bottled on the tour.  It really is a good bottle, I now wish I'd bought more than 3, both for the taste and the memories.

Son has one, I opened one.  I think I'll leave the 3rd for when I pass with a note attached.  Hopefully that'll be in 30 or 40 years.

How do you Old Elk?  Any in particular?

Yes, what @Anwalt asked. A few stores in my area have it. One store had private picks of regular and wheated.

I liked it so much that I bought a 2nd bottle.   The caveat here is that this is a single barrels pick that a buddy of mine did, whose palate aligns very closely with mine.    I've never had their standard offering.   It's an MGP distillate  I read that Greg Metze worked for MGP for something like 40 years.  At one point, before he started working for Old Elk, he worked with Old Elk to *"create unique mashbills and and distill whiskey's specifically for them"    The bottle states "Greg's Picks"   Greg is my buddy who picks these, and not to be confused with the distiller, who is also named Greg.😉

Now that I've bored you with that, as far as the whiskey goes, it's very good.   It's a high malt i.e. 34% mashbill which, ordinarily, gives me pause, but it doesn't undercut the spice or overly mute the caramel and whatever else is going on, (sorry...I'm not very descriptive.....I recognize and appreciate the nuances of what I'm tasting, but have a difficult time putting it into words).  The bottom line is that  I trust my buddy and all of his picks have been firmly in my wheelhouse.   His is one of the few picks that I'll buy without trying first.   I was waffling on this one, (because of the aforementioned malt....if I want malty, I'll pour scotch), but as soon as I tasted it, I I bought that 2nd bottle.

When these are gone, (and the price is right),  I wouldn't hesitate to buy one of their standard offerings.
