Wandered into a BevMo and found this.  In a world of $70 KC picks, this one ended up $45 after member rewards discount and a coupon.  And it was barreled on my birthday, so bonus!

Very happy to find this tucked away in the beer section at TW today.  I think that's a sign it's time to crack my B522.

Same old story. 🧐 We had to go to the store to stock up on a few things, and get the fixins for my chili on Halloween. Naturally, I had to stop by a liquor store on the way home. A very, very long story short, my timing was kinda right for a change. I ended up with a BT and Weller SR. They also had put out a couple of EHT Small batch, a  couple of ORVW 10’s and maybe a Lot B, but ………..

Excellent!  You should grab a back up and make it your "Birthday Bourbon."

Hmmm....some people are sneaky!  I would hate to have to comb every aisle and look behind every bottle in a TW store.  However, this story almost compels me to.

My last purchase too. I'll just borrow your pic Matt. However my was mid $50s instead of $40s, but I'm sure my local wouldn't overcharge me. 😡:ph34r:

Last night, I got an IG notification that a store I follow just got a KC pick.  I zoomed in on the picture and this one was bottled on my wife's 50th birthday so I ordered one.  Now we will each have a special birthday bottle.  With this luck, I should buy a lottery ticket!

Man, now you need to grab 2 spares.  This is a really cool story.  Good whiskey, barreled and/or bottled on you and your wife's birthday.  It is especially cool if your wife doesn't like bourbon so you can drink it in celebration of her!  Win-win!

My wife was a vodka drinker.  She started liking bourbon some after we got together but our trip to Louisville in 2019 opened BOTH of our eyes and now she likes bourbon a lot.  KC is probably her favorite, so she will have no problem finishing her bottle.  We did a few distilleries on the Bourbon Trail in 2019 (our 30th anniversary) and bottled a bottle of KC SiB at the end of the distillery tour, got it laser etched with our anniversary, and put our thumbprints in the hot wax seal.  Probably gonna open it on our 35th.

And the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.  My 23-yr-old son turned 21 during the Covid lockdowns so I couldn't take him out to a bar,  Instead, we had him over to the house and I asked him what he would like for his first legal drink.  His response:  "Knob Creek, neat."

I just picked up the KC pick that was barreled on my wife's birthday.  I could have had it shipped to me, but the store is ONLY 50 minutes away so OF COURSE it made more sense to drive down and pick it up myself.  Good thing I did, cuz the person who packed the order put a bottle of regular KC SiB instead of the pick, so I had to get that corrected.  And since I was there, I might as well take a look around...and these followed me home.  The Remus is a store pick.

  • 3 weeks later...

Wife and I went to a whiskey festival last month and tasted a local craft distillery: Corbin Cash.  The had some nice whiskeys but my wife fell in love with their Sweet Potato Liqueur.  It really does taste like that sweet potato with marshmallows on top dish that someone's aunt brings to Thanksgiving.  Since I had to pay for shipping, I felt it was only right to amortize the expense over two bottles instead of one.  Hard to argue with a KC store pick.  This one is actually mislabeled.  the "Fifth Floor Wood" is another barrel that is coming; this one is actually "'Fourth Floor Sweetness."  It's the third KC pick I have seen barreled in the 8 days between Oct 9 and Oct 17, 2012.

Given the parameters for Japanese Whisky are what they are.  I've heard that sweet potato liquor is sometimes part of the blend.  Japan has a tradition of using the sweet potato for distilling. 🍠

Dunno about Japan, but everybody has been fermenting whatever they have available since forever.  Corbin Cash is a small craft "farm-to-bottle" farm/distillery in central CA.  It started as a family farm, with the current generation looking to do more with the stuff they grow.  They make a sweet potato spirit that becomes their vodka, gin, and liqueur, as well as a farm-grown 100-percent Merced rye and a blended whiskey that combines the sweet potato spirit and the rye.  We tried the 917 rye and it was pretty darn good.  They also have a couple of bourbons, but I don't know if they grow any of those grains on the farm.

Have you opened the Remus pick yet? I’ve got a local pick I’m eyeing but no age listed and the employee had no clue. I imagine these are 4 or 5 years old, tops 6??

I had not but, because I am nothing if not selfless, I have just opened it and will give you my impressions, such as they are.  Unfortunately, the only other Remus I have had is Repeal V, so kind of a high bar.  Also, my nose and palate are not very sensitive.

The nose is fairly light, not overwhelming, with some dusty, leathery notes one might associate with age, a light vanilla overtone, and an almost citrus astringency possibly coming from the alcohol or maybe from rye spice.  The same notes follow through on the palate, with the vanilla coming out a bit later in the finish and some gentle spice at the end.  The finish is reasonably long for 109 proof, and shifts from flavor to flavor.  I'm just getting some stewed fruit or fruit compote after about 30 seconds.  The mouthfeel is fairly creamy.

I finished my 1-oz sample and had a sip of coffee and the combo finishes like a sweet delicious coffee drink with real whipped cream, like an Irish coffee or a Kahlua and coffee.   I

The age and mash bill are not stated, which I think is a really big omission for a single barrel.  For me, this bottle falls into a pretty large category of bottles that are fine, but I would probably not buy again, as I could name several bottles I prefer for the $50 it cost me.  I do have a bottle of Repeal V in the bunker, and when I get around to opening it, I will compare it to this bottle just for laughs.

Hope this helps.  I am your humble servant.

Yes, so it would appear. 🤣

I, for one, appreciated the review, your stated deficiencies notwithstanding.  😉

I've been told by liquor store employees (so...) that these are 5 or 6 years old, depending on the barrel chosen.

I bet if you had a 6-oz sample your review would have been more favorable.  😜😀  More whiskey = better review.

Just kidding, I appreciate your review because see Remus SiB often and I just can't justify a purchase without sampling first.

I have an unimpressive Remus single barrel store pick with the MGP "high rye" mashbill from a local store that I once bought on a lark.  The store did not offer a sample before buying.  I love good MGP but this one is meh.  Lots of vibrant fruity flavors but overall it's a bit disjointed and unremarkable.  I chalk it up more to the store pickers than the Remus SiB brand.  But my lesson is "try before you buy" for these single barrels.

However their Repeal Reserve is consistently top notch and not to be confused with the Single Barrel product...
