What Bourbon Are you Drinking Summer 2023?

Started "end of work week" (and dry til today) Friday with a freezer pour + 1 of regular MM. Could've stayed here but was quite antsy about trying an Old Soul TinType. Sure, it's only a 7yr old but wow!

To start, it's 122+ proof and the mouthfeel is an immediate viscous coating of caramel/apple goodness. Mid palate glides into a med/long finish with nothing off putting; at least to me. The spicy burn is slight and only on the front of the palate and it drinks well below it's proof.

Bottom line - at $110, I think I will go and get the other one that was on the shelf...

1783 tonight,  got my hands on one, not that obvious in Europe, unfortunately. It is the old bottle, so the 86 proof, the 90 proof has apparently not find it's way to Europe yet.

This is stunningly good.  I’ve liked the Chattanooga releases so far, but this BIB whiskey blows my socks off.  Classic bourbon notes as it’s base, but a plethora of herbal, chewy, and different spice notes dance along the ride from nose to finish.  Incredibly multi-dimensional, while not losing one inch of its bourbon-ness.  The finish is beyond fantastic.  It invites a very prolonged “Chew” long after the whiskey is in my belly.  
My early leader as my Bourbon/Tennessee Whiskey of the year.

It has been a really up and down few weeks.   My father-in-law passed away almost three weeks ago (down).  Not unexpected and, in some ways, a blessing.  That was followed by my daughter's wedding last weekend (up).  A very nice affair in Pittsburgh.  Oh yeah, I needed a root canal in the middle of all this (down). 

 

I had a couple hours before the wedding and searched out a liquor store.  Picked up an OF 1920.  Been wanting to try this one for some time and decided to open it tonight and have a pour in memory of my father-in-law, as well as to the new couple.  I am really enjoying it and expect that I will be keeping on in stock going forward.  I'll always have some memories when I have a pour.

Rough time for you.  Kudos to you for at least taking the time to recognize the highs.  Life is too short to focus only on the lows; yet we still need to recognize the lows, mourn our losses and celebrate their lives.

Impressive.  I have a Spring 2017 BiB open now.    So you're saying I need to try out the Spring '19 version now.  Dammit, another bottle I need to buy. Lol

First pour tonight was a Maker's 101.   This wheater tasted so good so I decided to stay on the wheat farm for the night.  2nd pour was a Lincoln Road MM PS pick which was very nice as well.

 

I decided to cut to the chase and go straight to the top of the wheated bourbon food chain.

 

'17 WLW in my glass now.  Superb.

I've wondered about those proof differences. I think we saw it with Woodford as well.

The King is dead, long live the King - that's the cycle to which we are consigned. Easy for an outsider who is not presently going through it to say. And yet...necessary for us to hear.

 

I am sincerely happy to hear of your ups and sorry for the downs. I'm betting your father-in-law would be pleased to know of your manner of reflection. I know mine would.

 

To a new union, the lives it improves, and, perhaps, to the new lives it produces.

 

Minor side note: Thank God (and capitalism) for new tech. My Dad (75) tells me what dentists were like back in The Day. I'll not like the visits, but I think I'll take the modern over the old in this case. A thing to be thankful for.

Not in this case,  Heaven Hill changed (upgraded) the 1783 in 2021, new label, new bottle and amped up the proof from 86 to 90. So in this case it is not a strict proof difference between EU and US. Indeed WF DO is a good example, but also the JD SiB and SiB rye, where EU proof is 90 and US proof is 94. Wrote to Brown-Forman about it as I did not find any info on the web at all, obviously they did not respond.

I haven’t seen it in Indy but based on my experience with their other products and this post, I will be looking a little harder.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Hopefully,  things are getting back to normal.

 

OF1920 is a stellar bourbon and very suitable for reflecting on life's events.

Tonight I shall bring up the OF 1920 from the basement and have a pour in honor of your Father in law.  It doesn't really belong in the basement, but if it sits in my sight line, I tend to choose it too often and drink it too quickly.  Maybe that's not such a bad thing.

Bottle kill pour on a big cube. I'm convinced OF at BP just isn't for me. I'll stick with OF86, OF100, 1910, and, 1920.

I've tried quite a few of the OF BP picks and every one has been delicious to me. A few of them were crazy good. I'm not much for water or ice with bourbon but I find that OF products in particular take water very well.

I attribute the recommendation of adding some drops of water to ET BIB to make it really good to you.
