Last night I had 2 pours of Green River and a pour of EW BIB while sitting by the fire and watching a movie.

Making some serious time for Christmas...finally.  Carols and wrapping are on!  Decided to open something festive for the season.  Even more so since it's one of the little 375 bottles.  Dumped the day after Christmas 1996.  Tastes as good as it looks.

A quiet night with just the wife and I.  Enjoying a pour of RR SB SP and watching It’s a Wonderful  Life.
Tomorrow night we are off to a Winter Solstice Celebration  that a friend puts on with the local library at the old downtown theatre.  He, his wife and several friends play Celtic music of the season that culminates around the fountain in the square.  I may require a flask for the fountain sing-along

Always a great celebration of the Holidays.  Cheers!

Going with the King tonight.  For me there is no bourbon of any type that delivers such a nosing experience as GTS.  And while, there are many great barrel proof bourbons over the years, none harness the power of high proof with such luxurious flavor from front to back.  This whiskey in all of its releases, is just amazing to me.  There is no equal.  If GTS were a horse, he would be Secretariat.  Drinking it is like watching this video.

It was movie night for me and the missus.  Had a Knob Creek at the theater while we watched Napoleon.

Back home and I had a short pour of both Still Austin BiB white corn and red corn. The red corn sweetness is in my wheelhouse.

 

Now I settled in with an old school Baker's small batch.  Such a balanced, well rounded bourbon.  

 

If aliens landed here and wanted to taste a sample of "what bourbon tastes like," Baker's Small Batch would make my short list.

If my Catholic education is correct (and unclouded), the Emperor Constantine set the celebration of Christmas on 12/25.  This was a result of a contested belief that Christ was born and crucified on the same date.  The extrapolation of nine months placed it in December.  Th actual date is never mentioned in the Bible.

The pagan solstice vastly predated the birth of Jesus and was based on the shortest day of the year.  He chose the date specifically to usurp their festivities or at least distract them from generational habits.  At that point in time, there were only two seasons, Winter and Spring, the Solstices marked the shortest and longest days.  Winter Solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year.

No pics but passed around a flask with a few friends at a seasonal celebration tonight.  Now that we are home, time for a glass of WTKS to myself.

When we got home I took the dog out and found a wrapped bottle on my front porch from Santa.  I’m guessing it is from my neighbor that I helped out with closing his pool a few months ago.  It is sitting under the tree but will likely get opened tomorrow.  I’m out early to deliver Christmas treats to a few LS friends.

Yep I know the history of the holiday, I studied European history many moons ago. I still find it kinda funny that in the year 2023 people are celebrating winter solstice again, presumably as an exercise in virtue signaling.

We just arrived in Las Vegas for our annual trip to see Mrs. Jazz's family.   Bottle prices are high on the Strip, but here's one of the best whiskey values on the planet - Rittenhouse Rye BIB.   Same mashbill as the elusive Pikesville,  this tastes like milk chocolate and cling peaches in a glass.   By golly it sure does hit the spot!

I've found that if you add a splash of those earlier hot mess releases into a pour of Eagle Rare, it really sings.  I don't measure, but I think the ratio is roughly 1/3rd Jr to 2/3rd's ER.   A fellow member here suggested that and it really works.
