Well at least you didn’t have to stand in the bunker for 30 minutes like a deer in headlights wondering wtf to open.

🤣. Yeah, The Universe was trying to tell me something!

I did like it (in the mouth, not the eyes). Very sweet, not the astringency that often accompanies wheat. Not super complex, but the finish was more bourbony, a little bitter and really offset the sweetness well. Unique. I liked it.

And yup, Markandrex, Gollum all the way. God bless fellow geeks!

A New Way to Open Bottles (Not Recommended):

Old Elk Double Wheated came well recommended from a guy who is usually right. Got via KL Wine. Friend drove to my annual Vegas trip. Another friend took it to Nashville (because I had too many bottles to take back on my own). Made its way to Columbus. Then put on a plane to PR in luggage. Heavily sealed in an inflatable bag that protected it quite well. Got around to opening some of those up that were sitting in the closet. Remove from bag, put away, check XL for accuracy.

Cork was super wrapped. Trying to get bottle out of the very tight bag. Pulling, pulling, pulling. on neck. Hand  slips to cork/stopper, cork comes out, liquid sprays like a shotgun in my face. And yes, It Burns Us, It Burnnnns Us. Washed face. Cut open bag.

Note how much remained in the bag. Get it out, quick! Have too much estrogen already, the plastics and the hobbits is Nasties, Nasty. Most of it made into the Glencairn, some Preciouses Drops didn't make it. My Precious!

Another day, another saga.

Now we'll see if this stuff is any good.

Sprayed in the face! Amazing. Good recovery though.

  • 2 weeks later...

Opened a Buffalo Trace tonight, first new bottle of BT I've opened in maybe 4 or 5 years.  One of the first bourbons that really got me on this journey.  Fittingly was donning my Buffalo Trace shirt just bought in April!  Cheers SB!

ECBP A120. 136.6! Gonna let that one breath for a spell....water drops on the Glencairn, I know, I know. Doubt it'll matter with this heat.

I've been wanting to try that.  I thought their regular Bourbon was pretty good.

At least not in the Bourbon section -  technically it's a liqueur.

I enjoy their standard bourbon as an easy price friendly sipper. I need to do a side by side, but for only a couple dollars more, I think I may prefer MM 101 more.

Cracked a couple of top ten pours of my life over the last couple of weekends.  We're terrible at describing things, but notes are below as written at the time.

WFE - Nose: Brown sugar, proof, extremely bold.  Palate: Sweet molasses, spice, citrus/orange peel.

HH18 - Nose: Caramel, whipped cream, so much oak.  Palate: Vanilla, caramel, so much oak, burned brown sugar.

All the recent M101 posts triggered this pour. It's working a lot better than the 4RSB that I had earlier....

Am I wrong or does it not even contain whiskey? Grain neutral spirits if my memory is right.  Don't quote me on that but that's what I recall anyway.

Bought this one several years ago, right before it disappeared for good.

Still has that lovely spearmint-ish profile going on that I remember.

Good Stuff!

Starlight Double Oaked 6-year (finished in American Oak), 111.5 proof

The other day I tried the Starlight Double Oaked 7-year (finished in French Oak) and it was fabulous, so today I picked up (and have opened) the 6-year offering finished in American Oak.  I'm normally not a big fan of double oaked or finishes in general , but I decided to get out of my comfort zone and experiment a little.  Glad I did!

The 6-year offering finished in American Oak is more in the neighborhood of what I expect from a double oaked product (rich oak, chocolate, tart cherry jam, vanilla) whereas the 7-year finished in French Oak is a fruit bomb that drinks like a high-rye bourbon or a barely legal rye whiskey.
