OGD 16yr

Located from a little "honey hole" in the bowels of Boston - $149.99 OTD!  Now I wonder what a blend of OGD16 & OGD114 or even an update of my GW4G blend with the older bourbon would taste like???

Where is that graduated cylinder from my 5th grade chemistry set???   😋

Or as my mother used to say (in Chinese, of course) "Idle hands are the Devil's workshop" or something like that . . . . .  🤪

How ‘bout a measuring cup and graduated shot glass?  😁

My mother (the scientist in the family) would have had heart failure if I used her cooking implements with my whiskey blends.  "You MUST be precise!"   🤯

I took the plunge and bought one at MSRP.  I'm glad I have a bottle (even though it's overpriced).  I stuck it in the back of the closet and will probably open it in the spring of 2025.

So, inquiring minds are wondering about this blend.  Any success?

Had an opportunity to buy at "retail" but passed after trying it at a friends.  I wasn't impressed with it so I left it for someone that would hopefully appreciate it.  They were running close to 200 here.  Maybe 189 or 199.  I think Baker's 13 is a much better pour.

I have yet to see a btl of this, let alone try a sip. I dislike the price point but would buy at msrp. This would hurt a bit reaching for the wallet but I do love OGD bib and 114.

What I don't understand is why they used a different mashbill than the standard OGD's??? And not disclose the mashbill??  Why call it OGD? Are they trying to get customers to buy the name/label/age statement and not the liquid inside?

I think I might have talked myself out of purchasing one. 🤔

Or probably not. 🤪

If not the OGD mashbill then regardless of label, it ain’t OGD. That was enough to dissuade me from seeking a bottle. I may have a pour if they have it on offer at the distillery next month but as far as purchasing? I will now wait for actual OGD in a future release as I’m sure they will be additional line extensions.

I didn't realize that it wasn't the OGD mashbill.  Yet another reason not to buy it, and I'm glad I didn't.  With this and "Baker's" High Rye, Beam is really playing roulette with their brand identities.  I feel it's a marketing mistake, and totally unnecessary.

Where are you seeing that it is not the OGD mash bill?

The press release says “It was patiently aged while converging the high rye recipe bourbon drinkers know and love with significantly extra time in the barrel.”

I just saw it mentioned by Breaking Boubon in their review of OGD16:

"Though it features a high rye mashbill, which is a hallmark of the brand, it is not the same mashbill as the brand's other current releases."

However, the reviewer didn't cite any source or mention how they came to know this.  Interesting.

Thanks. I also note that there is a comment to that blog post review asking this very question from two months ago, with no answer. I see other blogs suggesting this release is the typical OGD mash bill (63/27/10), but no source cited there either. Unfortunately, many of these whiskey bloggers print rumors/speculation as fact, so unless they provide a legitimate source, I take them with a grain of salt. I'll say this, it is logical to assume that Beam would use the same mash bill in this OGD release as they use in all other OGD releases, just for brand consistency's sake. Now, if they had a significant lot of older "high-rye" barrels for some other reason, I could believe they used them here, among several other recent releases using older, high rye barrels. But absent such a scenario, I don't know why Beam would have a bunch of 16-year old barrels that aren't associated with any of its existing brands.

I agree with you, JJ.  It doesn't make sense to me why they would not use the OGD/BH mashbill.  And in hindsight, I should have not taken Breaking Bourbon as gospel and I should have mentioned my source, but usually they steer me in the right direction.

Or at least I feel they do. 🤷‍♂️

Will be interested in finding out the truth.

Sounds like they USED OGD MASHBILL for this bottling according to this article.

Below is the link to the article from Men'sJournal.

My bad for any panic or confusion I may have started.

No panic, in fact SB.com is exactly the place where issues like this should be hashed out and or de-bunked if need be. I too read "somewhere" that the OGD mashbill was not used, I was surprised, disappointed and immediately stopped looking for one, now IF that turns out to be incorrect, well, I missed out and I will look forward to a pour at Beam in April, however, where there is smoke.... so lets see if any of our members have anything additional to add.

I agree with gumbo.  MSB's post is welcome because it brought the issue to my attention and I had no idea there was some question as to the OGD16 mashbill.  Agree that SB is the place to discuss the question. Thanks!

I hope that this forum can validate the mashbill. I know there are many here that have the resources and knowledge to find what is in that btl of OGD. This is one reason I joined the forum is for the plethora of information you all have. And that you are so willing to share it.

Thank you!

I checked with a friend who works at Beam/Makers Mark and he confirmed it’s the same mash bill.
