What Bourbon Did You Pass On 2025?

Yesterday our local state run store dropped the remaining allocated products they had left from holiday.   It was scoured over pretty quickly.
When I got there the only remaining thing I was interested in was an OF1924.   Told the clerk to ring it up and when the register showed $123 OTD, I asked her to double check as I had paid much less for same months ago.  Nope, that was the new retail.    I left it right there and walked out.   🤷🏻

I sure thought msrp was $115 for the first release? 🤷‍♂️ I want to say most places were getting $125+. Not sure about the latest release but $123 seems reasonable. At least "reasonable" as relates to msrp. I tried the first release and thought it was a $75 bottle at best.

I was going to ask you, what did you pay several months ago? I never saw the first release myself.

I guess I’m not sure but I thought it was below 80.00.   Either way $123 caught me off guard.  I don’t feel like that bottle is worth that. I guess this is where we’re at on pricing….

I had to go look, but I guess it was 110 last time. After the first bottle, I don’t see the value at that price for that one personally.

Here's an odd one - Bulleit Single Malt.

Local grocery store has had it for months @ $45.  That's twice the price of same brand Bourbon or Rye.  It doesn't appear to have moved at all.

would love to try OF1924. Finally saw some, but at $125, had to pass. I guess that's close to "retail" though?

I pass on most Bourbon currently unless it's something I want at a feasible price.

Like, recently Stagg 24C then 24D hit the shelves in my area.

One store had it for $119 (feasible, bought)

One store had it for $170 (passed)

One store had it for $169 (passed but I stayed to buy some other items I wanted)

When I came to checkout the owner said in light of my purchases he would sell me the Stagg for $99. (Yes please, Bought)

Notable items I passed up today were Woodford double double oaked, OF1924, Booker's, & Little Book Infinite.

Still 30ish over msrp, he cleared a healthy profit.

I used to get it for $55.00 and

still have a little under half a bottle of that hot mess 2nd release.

I thought that the 3rd release was good.

I've read that the much later releases are really good, but I'm not willing to pay North of $100.00 for it.

I've backed off higher ABV whiskey anyway.  100-115 proof has been squarely in my wheelhouse over the past couple of years.  If whiskey cracks the 125 proof barrier,  I add water, or a few small chips of ice.

I have big cubes, but am a slow sipper so I find myself drinking faster because they still melt faster than I like.

100-115 proof:  me too!

When I use a big cube I take it out of the glass when the dilution gets to the point I like. I put the cube back into the ziploc bag into the freezer for my next pour.  I find it annoying to do this, but otherwise it wastes a good pour if the cube melts too much.

I'm at the point where I only use the big cubes for Old Fashioneds.

I finally saw some Remus Repeal VIII on the shelf, but at $120 at Total Wine I had to pass.  And I didn't technically pass since I was flying domestically, but the duty-free shop at HNL had Blanton's falling off the shelf at $120.

They had a lot of Blanton's at the Duty-Free in Aruba last September for $99.00.   I still passed

Makers Private Selection.  Not feeling it for 79.

Also passing for now on ECBP A125.  I've read mixed reviews, so pass for now.  Let me know if I made a mistake.

And Penelope Wheated.  I'll focus on Makers regular & 46 for now for my wheated fix.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've passed on everything.   My last few bottle purchases were actually tequila.  This year will be about culling the herd and getting the total bottle number down in my stash.  The only thing I may put a token effort into looking for is the Eagle Rare 12, and I have this strange feeling I'm never gonna see one in person.

This!  The tequila aside, the only bottles I’ve purchased lately have been ones replacing my “regulars”. As I’ve been creating spots on my open shelf, I’ve actually started pulling bottles from my “reserve” bunker to fill them. Time to enjoy some of my better bottles.  @Bourserker, I’ll let you know if by chance I see an ER12. Hey, ya’ never know. FWIW, one store here finally sold their last Weller Millennium. 😆

Yeah, MSRP is currently $120 it looks like. I like the Old Forester 1924 and bought two at $115 last year, but I don't think I'll be buying another anytime soon. I guess, in summary, even at MSRP, it's only a maybe rather than a clear buy for me.

I'm right there with you, (bought some Tequila, pulling bottles from the bunker) except not even putting the token effort into looking for ER 12.  I'll tell people here if I see one, truly doubt it would be worth it to me to fork over the $$$ (whatever that amount might be).  💰 😯

Yeah, I'm thinking the ER12 is probably gonna be astronomically priced on the secondary, so I'll pass unless I see one for a reasonable price.

The tequila is kinda funny because I got into that fairly recently.  My only experience before that was with crappy stuff like Jose Cuervo.  Getting decent quality additive free stuff like Tequila Ocho opened up a whole new world to me, and I found out that I'm apparently a tequila guy.  I love that citrus, slightly grassy, vegetal thing it's got going on.

I passed a whole shelf full of regular BT Bourbon @ $21 and change.  Oh I think it's ok, just ok.  No need to buy it.  I feel for the folks that want it, can't find it.

You should check out some mezcals, there are a lot of really good ones. I think they get a reputation for being overly smokey  because of some of the common ones recommended for cocktails, but that isn’t true.
