What bourbon did you purchase this Winter 2024/25

I also picked this up last week.  Their own 7 yr old distillate.   I'm interested to compare this to the Blender's Select from 2020, I believe it was a NDP blend of 9 yr old bourbons, which was very good.

Very interesting, given I'm a fan of bottled in bond, plus getting to try their own make.

From what I recall, the story goes - originally the Bulleit Bourbon was sourced from Four Roses.  That contract ran out.  Then they had to get barrels from someone else in KY (maybe more than one source).  I don't know who.

They got barrels from anyone they could. I saw a nice range while poking around in one of their rickhouses.

Most brands pride themselves in a specific taste profile. How could Bulleit control any taste profile with multiple distillates? I hide when mentioning on this board I'm not a 4R fan so I never liked Bulleit (once I found out it was 4R i knew why). I might have to try the "new Bulleit" because it could match my taste preferences? Did you see some good stock that would keep you interested Steve?

They had a lot of Four Roses on hand and in the hopper when the contract ended so they could slowly blend in the other distillate for a gradual profile shift that wouldn’t be as noticeable.
Beam, BF, HH and even some Makers.
I’m now going to be very curious to try their own distillate. I didn’t think they’d come out with it all in like that. I figured the slow profile shift would continue.

Makes me wonder what those Bulleit single barrel releases could be.  🤔

Doctor appointment today and the wife rode along for lunch afterwards.  We stopped in a LS nearby and they had these and the regular Bomburgers.  They were doing a tasting and I had never tried before this.  The regular version did nothing for me or my wife.  The PFG was pfg!  One per person so glad the wife was with me!

I'll have to keep an eye out for it, hopefully it hits PR.

OGD16. Like it. Don't love it. Prefer the "less rye" Beam mashbills at that age.

Up in Montana getting ready to build a cabin.  Found some Larceny Barrel Proof C922 at retail up next to Glacier National Park.

Great batch.  Got me wondering what the locals drink..🤔

Cheers

I haven't tasted it, but I was thinking that might be the case so that's why I passed on it myself.  I enjoy the OGD mashbill at a younger age because it has some nice zesty fruit notes that I assume would be wiped out at 16 years old.

Definitely none of that in the OGD16.

I finally decided to grab one of these today since the sale price tempted me one to many times. I liked the initial pour and will be curious to see how it opens up over time.

Benchmark Full Proof is bloody awful! 🤮

I see lots of wonderful reviews about Benchmark Full Proof as well as the Single Barrel, and I like a good value; so I purchased a Full Proof to give it a try.  It's toilet water, absolutely terrible.

This photo reminds me that we need a new "Drain pour" thread .. .the old one got archived.

I haven't tried the Benchmark FP so I have no opinion on that bottle.  I did try the "Single Barrel" Benchmark and thought it had a weird taste note,... BUT it wasn't terrible, kinda different,  and I did finish the whole bottle. Didn't buy another.

My takeaway was that as long as I can buy standard BT for $25 off the shelf (plentiful in Texas), why in the hell would I purchase that Benchmark line for the same price?  No thanks.

I agree that it’s not very good.
It might work well to clean the toilet bowl at least…

I purchased one when it was new.

I'd call it very mediocre well liquor, except at high proof.  i didn't need to purchase a second.

Maybe use as a mixer with ginger ale or cola.

Hey, Benchmark is bottom shelf Bourbon, but still above blended whiskey, or flavored stuff.  👎

On the Benchmark series, I’ve purchased and finished all of them.  Full Proof and Bonded have been repeats.  The only one I had trouble with was the Top Floor.   A bit too prickly hot for my tastes.  In general, the series is a decent if not overly complex collection of bourbons.  And, very well priced, making their QPR better than many in my book.

Today's purchase definitely helped to ease the pain of yesterday's miss. 😀

I was in the mood for some Middle West Pumpernickel Rye, so I went to a local spot that normally has the core line of Middle West Spirits on the shelf.  When I arrived there was nothing to be found.  I politely inquired with one of the staff who said "I think we pulled it from the shelf and put in the bargain basket".  Yes, they did.  I picked up 4 bottles for $19.99 each (2 Pumpernickel Rye, 1 Wheated Bourbon, and 1 Wheat Whiskey), which was a nice surprise and a superb value.  The bad news is that Middle West was not selling and will no longer be available at my local store 🙁

I admit the Benchmark FP isn't great but I kinda like it.  I get a butterscotch note in it.  I like to add one of these charred oak spirals to the newly opened bottle and let it sit for a couple of weeks.  It takes some of the young edge away and gives it more complexity.
