It was a nasty day at work, so I am having a large pour of OGD 114, of course when it's time to get up and go back tomorrow, I may regret it.

Starting a Long day after work with a 2 ounce pour of Buffalo Trace.

Later will have some Old Weller Antique and finally near bedtime, I will have nice pour of George T Stagg Fall 2005.

Monday I am getting in a shipment of 1-Fall 2005 Stagg and 1- Old Weller Larue. Cant wait to try the Old Weller Larue!

The last three nights I've been on a Hirsch streak.

It started when my son from CA spent the night here as he passed through on a business trip. While he drank a bland, blended s___ch on the rocks, I dug out the Hirsch 20 he bought me quite a while back. I found it less dominated by charred wood than I remembered. Perhaps my taste of EC18 last week changed my perspective on that.

Last night it was the Hirsch 16 y/o, gold foil bottling. It was pleasant enough, but I didn't like it as well as the 20 y/o.

Tonight it was the gold wax bottling. It reinforced my impression as to just how ordinary the gold foil edition is. (Note to bottlers: If you can find out how the 16 y/o was stored between bottlings, there's a cautionary tale for you somewhere in there.) The flavor was rich and full. It was smooth enough to invite holding it in the mouth a while. Occasional subtleties emerged, beyond the basic caramel, vanilla and leather. For a moment I was reminded of Junior Mints. Later a floral scent emerged. This bourbon rivals the best I've ever tasted. I'll be sorry when this bottle is empty and even sorrier later as I open each of the several bottles of the gold foil, which I foolishly added to the bunker on the strength of my fondness for the gold wax version.

Yours truly,

Dave Morefield

I have opened that bottle of Bulleit I mentioned a few weeks ago. First impressions are not good. It doesn't even taste exactly like bourbon. But, I will give it a couple of more tries before I pass final judgment.

It's not exactly bourbon but right now, Sazerac 18yr Rye 90 proof, bottled in the fall of '05. I am really enjoying this pour...

After a very long but lucrative week at work, I will be enjoying an evening that will start off with ETL Single Barrel, move on to Eagle Rare SB and finish with Blanton's. I am very good to myself at times.

Still have not opened the Fall '05 Stagg.

Booker's - 8 years + 2 months old at 126.6 proof.

I drink bourbon neat - and before this - Old Weller Antique 107 was highest proof bourbon I have tasted. I expected a real alcohol burn - but I let it breathe for 5 minutes after pouring - and it lost the initial nose burn.

Booker's has a great nose and taste - and in my opinion - think it's the best of the 4 Small Batch Bourbon Collection choices( Baker's, Basil Hatden's, Knob Creek & Booker's ).

WT Rare Breed. wow can't believe this stuff is this good...and under $30! this batch that is the current release is something special in terms of quality. I'm thinking about poping a RR 101 to do a side by side.....

After a long time searching I finally found and couldn't resist the urge to open some VWFRR 13yo. Watching the movie Walk The Line sort of helped the urge to want to drink a good Whiskey, or 5, 8, or 11. Ok well started with ORVW 15yo to WT Rye, Old Overholt and THEN finished with the Van Winkle. I was eating Thai food and bourbon just didn't seem to go well so that's when I decided to switch to Rye... A better compliment to the spicy  food.

The VWFRR is truly exceptional!!!

I gave it a serious tasting, last night. First straight, then with a few drops of water.

It was very nearly undrinkable. All I get from the nose is harsh alcohol. That is just about all I get from the palate. The water didn't help.

Actually, it is pretty close to what I imagine "frontier whiskey" would have been like - harsh and unenjoyable, to be drunk only for the alcohol kick. :hot:

So, the rest of this bottle will probably go towards Manhattans and Sazerac cocktails. I hope it doesn't ruin them. :skep:

Well Tim, for once we agree on something. I agree totally with your assessment of Bulleit.

I am still in my Bourbon infancy, only having sampled 16 different bottles, but I really have found something to enjoy in all of them so far. I like Bulleit well enough. I find it mild, not as flavorful as some, but for me a decent pour. I had to open my bottle tonight just to double check.

Funny how people can taste so much difference in a product. I finished off the night with a nice pour of WT RB, which for me is second only to Bookers. I have only had Bookers in a bar, so I guess when I get my own Bottle it might be different, I only hope I enjoy it as much next time.

Probably due to my novice position, but I think the environment I am drinking in is still greatly impacting my enjoyment of the flavor. I need to take some time to do some real side-by-side tasting with nothing else going on.

I am a little worried...I mean for me that Bookers was incredible, I am afraid it might be due to the fact I got along with my teenager all weekend, had time to relax with my wife for a nice evening, and had nothing on the honey due list pestering me...That is going to require further investigation! I will endeavor to mature my tastes so that I can offer more critical tasting notes besides...Yummy.

Bought a bottle of Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage 1993 last Friday...Didn't spend much time with any other bourbon over the weekend. It goes down pretty easy.

I maligned this bourbon for being only 8 years old after the first two vintages were closer to 13.

This is very good bourbon. French Toast on the entry, cinammon and maple sweet.

I think my palate was just in the right mood for this.

I was pleasantly surprised. This was the first time I ever had this one all by itself.

Its always been a shootout with one or more of the other OFBB's.

Did a little "clean-up" of almosr empty bottles. PVW 15 (my favorite of the family) followed by some PGD114.

Though I've tasted it a couple of times before -- including at Cliff's relabeling party Saturday -- this is my first real study of the Kentucky Barrel SocietyTM 2005 'Barrel C' W.L. Weller 12yo (distilled at Stitzel-Weller June 26, 1992), which was my personal favorite at the barrel-pickin'.

post-367-14489812297928_thumb.jpg

It has lost none of its appeal to me. After a front-end whiff of strong vanilla, the nose settles into something akin to brown-sugar fudge overlaying a thin layer of chocolate.

On the palate, I almost want to chew this bourbon. Chocolate fudge and peppermint -- a bourbon a Girl Scout (think Thin Mints cookies) could love:cool:. I don't know that I've had anything quite like it -- but I like it:yum:!

Thanks, Cliff, :thankyousign: for preserving this bourbon intact as a single-barrel.

Finishing up now a generous pour of Weller Antique after starting off with some WT101. Think I'll call it a night once the last drop is consumed. Too much of a good thing usually ends me up searching for Advil about 7 hours later.

Well, first of all I am jealous that I am not drinking that Tim! And I have been meaning to ask, what is the "Kentucky Barrel Society?" I have my suspicions, but not sure... If anybody would be willing to trade a bottle of that Weller 12 at some point I'd be interested... But I don't suggest giving any of that to a girl scout :slappin:

Anyway, I am having a little VWFRR 13 year old tonite with something I don't hardly do and haven't in a long time, an ice cube added just to see what it did. Still good but not as good as unpolluted I don't think. It was a long hard night at the gym so I think one pour is all Imagonna have tonite.

Not "right now" because I'm at work, but last night - based on several posts here I picked up a bottle of Elijah Craig 12yo.

EC12 seems to have plenty of proponents and detractors here; put me solidly in the proponents catagory - I think it is my new favorite.

I was talking to the cashier where I bought it, telling her that I was trying different bourbons - she picked it up and looked at it like she'd never seen it before and said "Oooo, I like the bottle". Interesting to me because I dislike the bottle/label. As far as bottles go I think Bulleit, Buffalo Trace, Makers and even Old Forester have the EC12 beat - but as far as the contents, I couldn't be happier.

Tonight it is Baker's. It is the bourbon of the month and I thought I would revisit it.

Okay, first things first: This is my first post on this board. Hi, everyone, some of whom I recognize from another board.

Now, to the good stuff: A couple of fingers of Pappy 15 yo from a bottle that Julian and Preston signed at a tasting in Louisville, last December.

A bad day at work means some of the best get poured at home.

Mike
