So, I say, "you must be a SB.comer". "Why, yes" is his reply. "Plaidford from Kansas City." I introduce myself "Smokinjoe from Atlanta". We have a short conversation about our finds in the Volunteer State, while the owners of the store look at each other with this WTF? look on their faces. Again, Plaidford, good to meet you, and another reason why Straightbourbon.com is so COOL!

:toast:

JOE

I posted about this chance encounter in another thread earlier today -- definitely cool to meet you, Joe. What are the chances of 2 SB.com'ers - one from KC, the other from ATL - hunting at the same liquor store in the same small town in TN, at the same time? I had just stopped to get gas and then was on my way to I-40 to head to Nashville to catch my flight home when I saw the liquor store. Twenty minutes difference in our schedules, one way or the other, and we never would've run into each other.

It was hard to leave some other good stuff on the shelves, but I was flying home and, since I had to put the bourbon in checked baggage per TSA reg's, I didn't want to risk breakage on more than 2 bottles (they both made it home safely,BTW).

To keep this post somewhat on-topic -- although not bourbon, I picked up another bottle of Rittenhouse Rye BIB this evening.

Today we bought:

Rittenhouse Rye, 100 BIB

Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye

Old Pogue

The Rittenhouse has become a standby....

The Van Winkle was kind of a shock. We had tasted this once and both loved it. It wasn't on the shelf; it turns out the store is alotted one bottle per year, and the manager had it stashed away while he contemplated whether he wanted it. Somehow he decided to pass it on to us. (It had to be Paula's... smile.)

And, the Old Pogue... this is really nice stuff! Mapley, balanced, nice finish. I had thought this was difficult to find, but the story goes that one of the Pogue family was in town and in the store, asked why it wasn't available, personally made some calls to Kentucky, and now we have Pogue in Springfield.

Paula says, "The thing about the Pogue is you don't even have to get it into your mouth to already have it in your mouth, The smell of it is the taste of it. It is an amazing thing... it is breathtaking. Unlike any of the others, IMHO...."

I now have my spare bottle of Larue. I figured the Saz 18, Handy, and Larue were going to have the shortest "shelf life" at the stores. One more ER 17 and one more Stagg will complete the second set - and that set will go into long-term storage for next year's release.

Meanwhile, I have to fish out my bottle of last year's Saz 18 to compare it to this year's.

I made my first "big" bourbon purchase yesterday in Omaha. There were quite a few brands that aren't available in South Dakota. I ended up with one each of the following:

PVW 15

VWSR Lot B

ORVW 10/107

ORVW 10/90

WLW 90 7 year (the only kind of WLW they had)

ERSB 10 year

Thanks, Mark (Nebraska) for the heads-up on where to shop.

I think the Lot B and the ORVW 10/107 are going to be put away until Christmas (as gifts from my Better Half), but I can't wait to try the PVW 15 tonight.

I have a question: The ORVW 10/107 has a handwritten number on the label. What does the number mean?

Yesterday I found a stock of 1995 Evan Williams Single Barrel....

So a couple came home with me to bunker alongside their 1994 cousins

Two Bourbons:

Evan Williams Single Barrel (1995)

Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel

And an Irish and Canadian:

Forty Creek Barrel Select:searching: after searching countless stores

Redbreast

I've never tried any of these before. I'm especially looking forward to the EWSB as it seems to garner a fair amount of good reviews on SB.com.

The number does not denote anything. Numbers were applied but are generally meaningless.

I just picked up a bottle of Rock Hill Farms. Every time I have been to the liquor store to pick up a bottle, something else peaked my interest. I look forward to giving this one a try tonight.

The purchace was made last week, but today I recieved via snail-mail my Thomas H Handy Rye.

I do have a confession to make,......... I bought it on eBay.

Please hear me out, I tried several ways to score this item before I gave in to the dark side of eBay.

I placed a telephone order to one store in Kentucky. They said no problem we'll ship tomorrow.

A week later I called back and they gave me an excuse, and again said they would ship tomorrow. I checked my card on-line, no charges, so they blew me off, probably sold it for a lot more than the $59.00 they quoted me.

So I tried Binny's and Sam's in Chicago,.... nope. One won't ship to Michigan and the other hasn't got it.

So I tried my best to stay away from eBay, but I gave in,... yes I do feel exploited, but I think in about an hour from now, Mr. Handy will be talking to me and telling me I did good.

Mr. UPS arrived today with 3 bottles of 2006 William Larue Weller from Binnys. I love the nose on this one! As of today, it is still listed on their site for $59.99 a bottle if you are still looking for it.

Also recently purchased a couple of bottles of PVW 15 from www.shoppersvineyard.com on sale for $37 ea. Even with shipping from New Jersey to Oregon, this is a good deal.

After tasting the Pappy 20 at a bourbon event this past weekend, I broke down and bought six bottles. I went back and forth on this one what with all the talk about how it had been too long in the barrel, but both my girlfriend and I found it to be OUTSTANDING. We sampled six bourbons that night and it was an absolute stand out. The nose was incredible, so much fruit. And the taste? Fuggedaboudit! Don't know if that's technically acceptable tasting vocabulary, but it comes to mind. It was tasted along side a gold foil Hirsch 16, and we found it clearly superior. I'm so pleased to have some of this around for a while.

Off topic here for a second (except that I got 2 bottles yesterday,so it's not so OT), but how do we know the Stagg on the shelves now is 2006? It doesn't say anywhere on the bottle. It is about 0.5 lower in proof than a bottle I got a few weeks ago, that I'm assuming is 2005.

Lots of people like Weller Antique 107, but I found it to have a sort of bitter-tang aftertaste.

As an experiment, I had the Mrs. blind-taste some, and she didn't care for it either. She expects to enjoy whatever I have her try, so I think she was a little surprised.

I had most of the bottle hoping I would get used to it, but finally ended up dumping the last of it in some coke, and quite enjoyed it.
