It is...

My top (obtainable) five would be (in no particular order):

Pappy Van Winkle 15

Elmer T Lee

Old Grand Dad 114 (this one fluctuates, always in the top seven or so though)

Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit

Elijah Craig 18

Top five? Lessee . . .

WT Russell's Reserve 101 - the best bourbon I've ever tasted

Dickel No. 12 - my everyday favorite

Michter's Rye 10 yr - very peppery, a happy hit to the gut

Elmer T Lee - the Scotch scribes all rave about how a good whiskey has to be balanced; that's the trait this bourbon displays most of all

Evan Williams Single Barrel - I've tried the 1994, 1995 and 1996, and they're all the good liquid candy. (Gotta have a Heavan Hill on the list; they have a unique taste i wouldn't want to be without.)

(Just for fun, here's a top five Scotches, too: )

Highland Park - it's that balance thing

Bowmore, 15 year - a bit less medicinal than other Islays, but just as complex and with an even better aroma

Auchentosen - I would think this finely detailed malt would appeal to a bourbon drinker

Torbornory - this is sweet stuff, the Little Debbie of scotches. I love it.

Talisker - Like Pujols, a five tool player: nose, balance, flavor, texture, idiosyncracies,

is russells reserve 101 still available?? all ive seen is the 90..

The 101 proof was replaced by the 90 proof about a year ago ( +/- ). While it's no longer in production, the 101 can still be found, but you have to hunt for it a bit. Here's a pic of the 2 bottles side-by-side for comparison.

To answer your original question (in no particular order):

Bookers

OGD 114

WTRR 101

Elmer T Lee

Buffalo Trace

It seems weird that they say the 101 proof RR is "discontinued" when they must actually now be exporting it. We got it in Australia about 2 months ago and the shelves are full......

My Top Five:

1. Pappy 23 - Lawrenceburg

Poor Joe, you can't buy any of your favorites anymore except Ezra B and some variations of #5.

Mine would be:

Weller 107 Antique

GT Stagg

Eagle Rare 17

Russells Reserve 101

Weller 12.

However, I did try a Birthday Bourbon that was fantastic the other day. It's the current release and I do not own a bottle but I might need to remedy that.

You can't get that one either Pal. I'm not talking about Ezra-B 12 or 15, I'm talking about the old 15 y/o that comes in the wooden box. This stuff is a whole lot better than the Ezra-B 12 or 15.

If the ryes were allowed in this list all three from the 2006 antique collection could be inserted in the list or maybe make mine a top eight. [sazerac Jr., Sazerac 18, Thomas Handy]

W. L. Weller 12

W. L. Weller Centennial

Elmer T. Lee

WT Rare Breed

George T. Stagg

I haven't seen any in GA for several months, but I have some bunkered and stopped hitting all the out of the way stores.

My top five fluctuate, but just bourbons, no ryes, and things I got in GA:

OGD 114

Weller Centenniel

Rock Hill Farms

ORVW 15 (actually, I marginally prefer the 10, but the older bottling)

WT RR 101 (Criminy, I just realized I never opened that 12 yr!!)

Since the last two aren't around anymore, I'll add GA value favorites, and frequent top 5 listees:

Old Charter 12

Very Old Barton 90

Bob

My top five bourbons in no particular order are:

ORVW 15/Pappy 15

Pappy 20

William Larue Weller

George Stagg

Elmer T Lee (have to have it on the list for its value)

Since I was into Scotch before Bourbon I'll follow Jazzhead and give my top 5:

Aberlour a'bunadh

Lagavulin

Tullibardine

Glenfarclas

Compass Box Hedonism (it's a vatted grain scotch...but love it uniqueness)

I like to limit my top 5 to things I know I can get:

1. Pappy 15. The only wheater to make my list. I generally think wheaters lack pizazz, but I guess the extra ageing in this one makes up for it, because it is my absolute favorite.

2. Rare Breed.

3. Russell's Reserve 90. The 101 was number 2, but this one still makes the top five.

4. Blanton's

5. Woodford Reserve. It makes the list because I think it makes the best bourbon-on-the-rocks. It just nudges out Elijah Craig 18 for the 5 spot.

For the heck of it, an all inclusive whisk(e)y top five would look like this:

1. Talisker 18

2. Pappy 15

3. Redbreast 12

4. Rare Breed

5. Laphroaig 15

IMHO, the top 5 out there...

1) GT Stagg

2) Wild Turkey Rare Breed

3) Rock Hill Farms

4) OGD 114

5) EC 12

I tend to really like the high proof/barrel proof bourbons. Rock Hill and EC12 don't fit that mold but I do like 'em a lot.

We kind of did this once before but with 10 (March 2006). I love numbers...have no clue why. When we did the top 10 we finished with 46 voters who listed a total of 116 different bottles. Just for fun, the top 5 finishers back then were:

1) WT RR 101 (17 votes)

2) ORVW 15 (16 votes)

3) VW Lot B (16 votes)

4) GT Stagg (15 votes)

5) Bookers, VW 15, ETL (all had 13 votes)

So far we have 17 folks (39 bottles) and this threads top 5 are:

1) ETL (9)

2) VW 15 (8)

3) ODD 114 (7)

4) GT Stagg (7)

5) WT RR 101 (6)

I know the numbers really don't mean much, but I enjoy seeing what people like. It has directed some of my purchase's when I have a choice...led me to OGD 114, which I really enjoy.

I am sure some bottles get limited attention because they are difficult to find or cost prohibitive. I know here in WA we don't have the selection that some other States have, but I was pleased to learn that on the top 10 list (which had 13 bottles) I have access here in WA. to all but 2 of the bottles. So when I originally came to this site to find out more, obviously I value the opinions here to some extent, it was nice for me to learn I can act on some of those opinions and sample some fine Bourbons.

Our tastes cover a wide spectrum...good think we have so much choice.

My favorite on your list is Bookers...it hits me so incredibly well. Nice fruity nose, hits my tongue like hot caramel...and stays there.

The problem for me in making a top five is that it could easily become a top ten, or a top fifteen - and my preferences can change at any time.

All of these are in random order.

If cost/availability isn't an object:

American: GTS, Sazerac 18, VWFRR 13, ORVW 15/107, Hirsch 16

Scotch: Ardbeg 1977, Glenrothes 1974, Highland Park 18, Campbeltown Loch 25, Alloa 40 single-grain

Readily available and/or low price:

American: Weller Antique, Rittenhouse BIB, WT Rye, WTRB, Buffalo Trace

Scotch: Ardbeg 10, Aberlour 10, Highland Park 12, Compass Box Asyla, Clynelish 14
