Yesterday morning, I dropped by my local ABC store to see what grabbed my fancy.

A few weeks ago, I had filled out a suggestion card asking them to stock the Evan Williams Single Barrel and, yesterday, they had it (the 1991 bottling). So, I grabbed a bottle and took it to the cash register, where the lady nicely informed me, "That is going on sale next week."

So, I thanked her for telling me and put the bottle back on the shelf and started deciding what else I would buy. In the meantime, she had gone to the back room and informed me that it would be $4 off, next week. Well worth the wait, I might even buy two bottles.

So, I finally decided to restock my favorite bourbon, Knob Creek, which I am currently out of. Back at the front, the lady said, "I think that is going on sale next week, too." She went back to the storeroom and announced, "Yes, the 1.75L will be $10 off. Lots of things will be on sale in November, but then nothing will be on sale in December because of Christmas."

I gratefully thanked her for all the info and said I would just come back, next week. I went home empty handed! Drank Elijah Craig 12-yr old, last night. It is still wonderful.

That's the way it is with state owned socialist liquor stores Tim. Same thing in Virginia. This month there are good sales on Blanton's - $37, EWSB '91 - $19, 'The Fox' - $17, 1.75l EC 12 - $28, and 1.75l AAA 10 yo - $21. I'll go down to the ABC store tomorrow and buy one of each before they go off sale at the end of the month. I just have to stock up when the bourbons I like are on sale. Next month will most likely be just a handfull of bottom shelfers on sale for a buck off.

How much are your 1.75l's of Knob Creek running on sale?

The sale price on 1.75L KC will be $47, which is equivalent to just over $20 / 750ml. Probably doesn't touch what you pay, but that is $12 per 750ml less than normal, here. I have never bought a bottle that big before, but at this price I will just have to. Especially since it is my very favorite.

The sale price on the EWSB will be $23.

Prices here are just HIGH!

No Tim that's not much different from what I pay. $50 reg. vs. $45 sale. It makes sense to buy large bottles when they are on sale. You end up drinking better bourbon for less. Also it's imposible to pass up those giant sized versions of the regular bottle. Knob Creek; Elijah Craig 12, Buffalo Trace, and Old Forester are all like that - besides which they just all look so cool together when you set them out for company.

As I promised myself, I did go back this evening and purchase the EWSB 1991 and the big KC, both on sale.

Like the lady told me, there were quite a few bourbons on sale. The aforementioned, Dickel No. 12, Rare Breed, Wild Turkey 101, Russell's Reserve, Old Forester, and others I can't remember off the top of my head.

I sure hope I get some more money before the month is over.

Tim I'm nuts and I spend too much money on bourbon.Ask anyone. Here's a good example.I got off work at 8 this morning and rather than going home to bed I decided to stay up until the ABC store opened. After scarfing down some fast food sausage biscuits, I went and took a look at some new 2002 Jeep Liberty 4WD's. We're talking 25 grand for a well equiped 'off road' version. Monthly payments around $450. Now you're going to see why I drive a 15 year old jap pick up.

Every item on this list is at a sale price this month in the Virginia ABC:

Blanton's 750ml >>>- $36.55

JD Single Barrel >>> - $33.90

1.75l Jim Beam Black- $26.95

1.75l Elijah Craig 12. - $25.60

Russell's Reserve > >- $21.90

Evan Williams S.B.'91- $17.95

VA 4.5% Sales Tax > >- $ 7.33

Total Bargin Bourbon > $170.18

Yes I'll make this very same shopping trip at least once more before the sale goes off at the end of the month. Yes all the bourbon that I bought today will be gone by the middle of the month.

You can have your bourbon and drink it too, but not if you want to drive around in a nice new Jeep Liberty 4WD.

Could I get by on 'Ten High' for 60 months while I paid the Jeep off?

I hardly think so. What do you think I opened to drink while I wrote this post? Why the Blanton's of course! Hope my old truck can make it through one more winter.

Hello, Linn. Great price on the Blantons..When it is on sale here the best I can find is $39.98 . Your right about your priorities. I have a 96 Honda Odessy van with 117,00 mile. I too have also looked at new vans and su'v and at $25,000-$35,000 I like my paid off Honda quite well. It allows me the extra bucko's for what I like to drink. When Blanton's goes on sale I will get a couple bottles. Right now the Evan Williams Single barrel is $17.98 and Rare breed is $28.98 Last month I got 2 bottles of Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit for $32.98 per I do try and shop around.

Right now Ihave no desire or could I afford the best cars, houses, jewelry, etc. But I do have what I consider some of the best Bourbons available on the market today. and if it takes $80 for a bottle of 20yr Pappy or $50 for 16yr Hirsch that is something I can stretch for and feel good about. I also have fondness for fishing and I have some of the best rods and reels available today. Would I spend $50,000 + for a car. or $5,000 for a gold Rolex No!! But I will spend $450-$579 each for several Shimano Stella spinning reel and $329 each for 5 Shimano Calis baitcasting reels that should last me a lifetime..Yet there are those who will spend $50,000 and more on a car/van/suv etc $5,000 for that Gold Rolex and $250,000 and ups for that gota have house and will think I am crazy for spending $50 or more on a bottle of great Bourbon. Linn I have never meet you but I know where your coming from and understand your priorities. I delivery pizzas for Pizza Hut 5/6 nights a week and work real hard for my tips. I just get a lot of self satisfaction knowing that for an average guy like myself I can afford the best of something available today, Even if it's only fishing rods, reels and Bourbon. Creggor

And there you have the secret of life Creggor. All work is honorable no matter what the pay scale. I have been working class all my life and most likely always will be. There is no shame in being a man of modest means. Fish On!

Wow. Those purchases would last me several months.

I have a lot of obligations. No debt to speak of, just a first motrgage and one car payment. But, I have two children in private school and I also have to try to fund their future education.

So, I have to be pretty careful what I spend on the good things in life. Yes, I am worth them and I do for myself what I can, but the other things are the real priorities because they have long-term importance.

I am certainly not criticizing you, we just each have our own situations.

Cheers, Tim

Hey, I can vouch for Linn on this one. I've ridden in that thing, and it's a scary POS.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello, Today went looking for some 1991 Evan Williams Single barrel. Well my local Walgreens had some big bottles of Knob Creek on sale for $39.99 I kep hearing Linn tell me go ahead and pour yourself a big drink from that big bottle. Well I had never bought nothing bigger than 1 liter bottle and never a 1.75 but a quick look at the math .750 ml for $25.99 vs $39.99 and it was a no brainer. I whipped out my plastic money and left the store with the bottle. Walking out to the car felt kinda funny with that big bottle under my arm I was thinking it would be nice to have another under the other arm kinda to balance me out. Well this Walgreens only had the one bottle so I went to another Walgreens and bought 2 bottles same great price. Sale ends 11/17 so I figured I had better buy them while I had the chance. I left this Walgreens in perfect balance. Now if they would only market a big bottle of EWSB.. Creggor

Welcome to Bourbonia Creggor! That's how we like our bourbon = BIG & CHEAP! This is the same way that we like our women. "Good GOD give the drummer some!" - Frank Zappa [circa 1969]

By gosh, I may have to switch, BIG and CHEAP women and whiskey sounds pretty good. For some reason, I always seem to get women who are just like Starbux coffee.

Too expensive, thin, bitter & lukewarm.
