JTS Brown 86-proof, bottled 1988, distilled (I think) by Heaven Hill.

Otherwise skunked in my dusty bottle hunting...

Went back to an old hunting ground and found a stray bottle of WTRR-101 that needed a good home. Later, made good on my promise of a week ago to retrieve that last bottle of WLW 06 where I found one last week for $52 + tax. I put it away in the bunker with the other one. Hopefully can find another 1 or 2 in the coming months.....but, pretty doubtful due to the low production numbers.....very thankful for what I have found.

Picked up a bottle of Fighting Cock. I've been tempted to pick a bottle up over the last month or so, but when it went on sale for $14, I grabbed a bottle. SB'ers were saying this is a sweet bourbon....you're not kidding. I'll have to do a side by side with ETL to see how it compares.

A fruitful day, one of each of the following:

Eagle Rare 101

Wild Turkey KY Spirit w/ pewter top, bottled 2/14/01

Old Charter Prop Resrv, Louisville

Now, which one to open first?

I just received my order from Sam's in Chicago of 6 bottles of 10yo Sazerac Rye Jr. Has anyone tried this new offering? I have only tried it once side by side with the 6yo and could not tell any difference. They were both excellent and still one of my favorite pours.

Old Fitzgerald BiB. Does anyone have any info on this stuff? Straight up, it's a bit harsh, but a couple of ice cubes really smooth it out. I'm slowly working my way through the bourbon shelf of the one of our bazillion local package stores (John's Liqours in Falmouth, MA). They don't have much on the high end, but they do have an interesting selection on the lower end of the bourbon spectrum. mmmmmmmmmm bourbon!!

Old Forester Bonded. Very flavorful and spicy. Eagle Rare 101. I don't usually like sweet but this stuff is good sweet.

Mysteriously, ER 17 2006 and Twice Barreled from the 2006 BTEC re-appeared on the shelf of a local, very-high volume liquor store. They were limited to one per customer so I snagged one of each.

I just grabbed a couple of WT Russell's Reserve 101's that I found while doing a little dusty bottle hunting. I paid $29.99 each for them but they're kinda scarce these days. They had 4 more sitting on the shelf...the question is...should I go back and get the rest?

30 dollars is a bit steep, at least in my neck of the woods. I picked up one last week for 25.99. But at 30 bucks I'd still go for it.

Wow...so WTRR 101 is widely available in your neck o' the woods? Very nice! Sounds like I need to do a road trip!

Yeah, the store was in downtown DC and everything in there was almost exactly $5 more than what I usually see in other shops.

Around here all of the VA ABC stores have plenty of the "new" 90 proof version and as far as I can tell the same is true for most of Maryland.

No, not widely available. I wish! WTRR 101 has all but completely disappeared from the shelves. Replaced by the 90 proof version. I just happened across a lone bottle a while back.

I found a bottle earlier this week myself for same price as you paid. This store sold them a while back for $25.99 but went up on the price as stock diminished :hot: .

Anyhow, I left 2 on the shelf and am seriously thinking of retrieving them tomorrow. It is tough for me to pay almost as much for the RR101 as RB, but, it has disappeared and will never reappear from what I hear. IMHO, RB is the best offering from WT right now. If I hunt far and wide enough, it can usually be had for $30-35 in my general area of the state.

WT101.

Almost bought another RR101, as I have a line on a few more bottles, but with five about the house and no regular 101, I had to go this route.

I picked up a Lot B and a bottle of Bakers. I look forward to giving the Bakers a try as it is the last of the Beam Small Batch I have left to try.

I saw a bottle of Ezra B in the store today. I don't think I have ever noticed that on the shelf in the stores I usually frequent but the Bakers and Lot B won out.

I stopped at Liquor Barn on Fern Valley Road in Louisville on my way to the Sampler Friday. My mission when in Kentucky is to buy what I can't get here in Chicago, but you know what can happen once you get started.

Regarding prices, I just now noticed that Kentucky retailers charge no additional taxes on spirits. That isn't to say spirits aren't taxed in Kentucky, they sure are, but there is no sales tax added at the register. The price on the shelf is the price you pay.

In Chicago, by contrast, there is state sales tax (6.25%), county sales tax (1.5%), city sales tax (1.25%), state liquor tax ($2 a gallon), county liquor tax ($1 a gallon) and city liquor tax (50 cents a gallon), so a $19.39 shelf price for Wild Turkey 101 winds up costing $21.91.

Here's what I got at Liquor Barn:

Very Old Barton BIB (1.75) 21.99

(the rest all 750 ml)

JTS Brown BIB 8.69

Ancient Age 10yr 86 p 13.79

Heaven Hill 10 yr BIB 13.49

Bulleit 17.99

Four Roses Small Batch 21.99

Rebel Yell 10.79

Hancock Reserve 27.99

For anyone who doesn't live in Kentucky, the Bourbon Section in a Liquor Barn is a thing to behold. They even have a bonded bourbon section.

I love the bonded section. I picked up a J.W. Dant Bonded, which came first tasted blindly (by me) at Bourbons Bistro last week, this was out of a flight of 6 bonds (VOB's, an HH and OF bond, OG, can't recall the other one). It had a soft fruit character with good complexity and a lingering finish.

This cost me about $10.00, which is something like paying $10,000 for a Lexus.

Understatement is a much valuable, and too-little-used, literary tool.

I was at the Fern Valley liquor barn on April 11th and also bought the Four Roses small batch and Hancocks Reserve. The prices on these 2 as well as the JTS Brown BIB that Chuck mentioned are the lowest I have found anywhere. If anyone gets up to the Newport/Cincinnati area, Party Source has Old Heaven Hill very rare 10yr. BIB for 9.99. Party Source is another great store for bourbon!

Found a BHC IW Harper for a buddy. Nothing for myself. And, looking at my bank statement, that's all for the best...
