Jack Daniels Lem Motlow

Hi all,

for an acquaintance over here in Switzerland I am looking for a (full) Jack Daniels bottle with a Lem Motlow label. The bottle should be in good condition (good label, no leakage), size preferably 70 centiliter (I guess a fifth comes close).

I already found a set of three bottles (a half pint, a pint and a fifth) but the owner will only sell the whole set and is not prepared to break it up.

Question: is anybody interested in the half pint and pint bottle so we can split up the set and share?

Or: does anybody maybe have a Lem Motlow labeled Jack Daniels for sale?

I can arrange shipping to Europe so you don't have to worry about that.

Can't say that I have ever seen such an item, though I don't search for Jack often. Is this just a bottle of Jack with a different label?

Twenty something years ago when I worked at a liquor store in Atlanta we had a "Lem Motlow" whiskey, which was below the green Jack on the cost scale. I am pretty sure I subsequently learned that the distribution of it was very limited.

OK, from a quick google it looks as if it was only sold in Tennessee and Georgia and is no longer in production. It also looks as if I should have bought several cases, because it's going for a fortune these days.

I know nothing about Jack Daniels and only offered to help to locate the bottle so I can't comment on 'when bottled' and 'where distributed'. What I did learn though is that the going price is pretty high here in Europe, which might explain why my acquainance is prepared to pay quite a bit (700+ USD range).

I will look into the the connection mentioned and keep you updated on my quest.

What craigthom said is consistent with my knowledge about this product. It is a long-since-discontinued product of the Jack Daniel's Distillery that was never widely distributed. It also was a bottom shelf product, i.e., nothing special whiskey-wise, but that doesn't matter to many collectors.

I was surprised to learn, on my most recent visit to Lynchburg, that Lem Motlow whiskey was bottled until 1993. I'd assumed it was discontinued earlier.

I bought a bottle of this in Memphis in the mid 80s. I think it was Memphis, could have been Atlanta. I recognized it as a Jack Daniels product and since it cost a lot less than the black label I figured it was worth a shot. The label said it was three years old. It was hot, harsh, thin and I never bought another.

There seems to be a new George Dickel Cascade Hollow Batch bottling. Apparently less than 3yo. This may be of interest in a comparison with the Lem Motlow. I haven't had it or seen it yet, but a store in Georgia lists it as available.

well, i actually found THREE bottles of ole Lem Motlow in my closet...

one 750 mil unopened, perfect in every way. one 375 mil unopened, perfect in every way... and one 750 mil that unfortunately "is" opened (evidently at some point i took a swig or two out of it...about 3/4th's full but label and bottle are still perfect for the bottle collectors.)

Actually, most here would argue that no unopened bottle can be 'perfect' -- so it's the one you have open that's closest. (But, then, we're trying to find the stuff to taste/drink, not sell.)

The people at JD told me years ago that they bottled Lem Motlow right after prohibition ended to get some cash flow while they waited for green and black to age. It was sold only in TN & GA and removed from sale because it was basically unaged Jack and the company needed all the basic stock it could get when the brand took off in the late '80s. BTW I have 2 750 ml that I'm saving for my grandchildren. I had 3, but my wife opened one when she ran out of Jack and I was away on business. Almost divorce time!

good question but I don't want to disclose the price if you don't mind. The collector in question wanted this bottle really badly and he was prepared to pay a decent price which he did.

He asked me not to divulge what he paid for it so I am not at liberty to say. Sorry.

Beowolff has violated his user agreement, Big time.

This is a typical example of what the member's are talking about in the thread "bottle finder"...

contrary to Ms Boone's personally hurtful/spiteful statement/wild opinion/accusation...this site was involved in NO dealings between me and Mister hjlhjl. everything was one hundred percent above board between the both of us. and NO 'end user agreements' of any kind were broken or intentionally violated. i came here with NO intention of selling anything. but spotting the nice Mister hjlhjl's interesting post, i posted in turn...and the rest is history. no breaking any agreements...no shady business deals...no skull-duggery of any sort. and more than any money i might have gotten from my ole LEM...i made a nice friend in Mister hjlhjl which is MANY times more valuable to me than a mere bottle of old whiskey...and to my thinking, that SHOULD be one of the 'main' ideas (or maybe THE main idea) behind this (or any other) site, anyways.

it is sad that people that do know the whole story can take potshots at others when their backs are turned. but that seems to be the norm these days.

i would ask for an apology as her spin on the facts do not bear up to the light of day, but then i strongly suspect that our Ms Boone is not the kind to give one. well, that's okay, Ms Boone. Keep it. we obviously are not alike and i can say with some relish that i am glad of that fact.

You talk big of friendship but with out contributing here how do you expect to get to know any of us. Just because you sit on the sidelines waiting for someone to post a need for something you have does not constitute friendship. Those of us here who have had a pour together know the difference.

Agreed 100% with Tony's post. Betty Jo has a fantastic rep on this forum thanks to having drams with SBers, helping bourbon with finding their ways through the Kentucky Sampler or the like. Also has helped with SB clothing where profits have gone to charity or the board (not her pocket) if I'm not mistaken. All this to say nothing of the inside info regarding her workplace that she graciously shares. I would be honoured and privilaged to make her aquaintance.

Different boards have different ideas about newbies coming on to sell stuff at anything other than an origional price. At Whiskymag.com, it's buyer beware and anything goes. Here you are trading/selling with friends. Big difference!

If you tell people where the dusties are, you will be welcomed here I believe. If you are looking to resell the dusties or make profits from these transactions you will not.

i came here at the request of a customer to find out more info about a whiskey that i knew nothing of... pure and simple. nothing more, nothing less. and in coming here, i spotted a man needing something which reminded me that i had them (or thought i did) in storage and actually had no use for them. i attempted to pm him but it was several days before he responded so i posted up pics for all to see (especially for him in case he had not gotten my pm.)

very simple really. he needed something that i had. i let him have it. and became friends in the process. (shrugs) nothing at all shady or underhanded about any of that. yet i was jumped on for it. then in defending myself, why should i be surprised to be jumped on again?

that is the way of people, especially high-handed 'net cliques.'

down here in Tennessee, we were raised to treat EVERYBODY with respect and kindness as long as they treated us the same way... i don't fear tangling with igmo's...but then to do so would surely bother 'others' that have no dog in the fight and i am not about that sort of thing though no doubt 'some' are. and so rather than fight it out with cliques that obviously feel superior to everyone else, i'll just say goodbye to you all and let you have your way here.
