Megawatt
Whyte & Mackay Special Blend with an ice cube. Certainly one of the better entry-level blends in the world of Scotch whisky. No smoke but lots of dried fruit (raisins and figs), also honey. Wonderfully aromatic on the rocks.
ggilbertva
Decided to do a non-bourbon line up tonight so got together with a couple other like minded whiskey dudes and enjoyed the following:Bushmills 16 yearBushmills 1608Bushmills MillenniumTyrconnell 10 year, Madeira, Sherry and Port finishTomatin 12 yearAmrut Fusion (a great Indian whiskey)Paddy Old IrishCardhu 12 year HSMAberlour a'bunadh cask strength (120pf)That last one was superb...loaded with honey, toffee and very bourbon like. ggilbertva
Thanks, Greg. That did a great job answering my question. I replied to you here last night while I was having a Bushmills 10 y.o. SM (this stuff is so nice), but my post seems to have disappeared. (Maybe I hit 'preview' instead of 'submit' - duh!). I've only got a little experience with the Irish, but after a rough start with Jameson, I find I really like what I've had so far and want to branch out a bit. Comparing price and your excellent descriptions, I think my next port of call will be Tyrconnell Port 10 year.Edo - you can't go wrong with the Tyrconnell. Another one I would recommend is Redbreast 12 year, it's a very nice Irish from the Midleton Distillery. If you can find the 15 year, that one is considered even better than the 12. I haven't had that one but have a lead on a couple bottles in Ireland and hope to have those in hand mid summer.

AVB
Balblair 24 Limited Edition #2542 of 3150 from 2003. There are classic tastes of toffee and oak mixed in with a grapefruit like citrus. Quite unlike the vast majority of malts. The finish keeps the citrus feel for quite some time when toffee comes out near the end.
JamesW
Was up in Canada all last week house-hunting and bought a bottle of Gibson's 12 yr (Canadian Whiskey) to see how I might survive up there without many favorites. The first sip was all alcohol. Tasted like rubbing alcohol with a faint sweetness. After a few minutes left to breath the rubbing alcohol flavor subsided slightly and what remained was very unimpressive whisky that had a lot of burn for 80 proof. All in all, not a good first purchase over there.Back home now and enjoying some JW Black and Lagavulin 16.

I'll have to pick a bottle up and give it a try, since I can get it locally.

rmallen
Enjoying a dram of Aberlour A'Bunadh, Batch no. 21. Almost ready to add it to the Which Bottle Have You Laid To Rest? thread. This has been an outstanding bottle. I've considered picking up another bottle of Batch 21, but think I would like to try a different batch. Anyone have one they recommend? I've also tried Batch 27, but didn't like it as much as Batch 21.

Tonight I started with some Margaritas and have moved on to some Whitehorse. This is one of my favorite inexpensive blends. There's some smoke and spice and quite smooth for such a young whiskey, a very nicely crafted blend indeed!

The Boozer
Had two drams of Glenmorangie LaSanta to finish the bottle. While I enjoy other sherry cask scotches from different makers, this one was a big disappointment. The other "flavored" cask infused whiskeys by Glenmorangie are very enjoyable and the "original" is quite good. This one just misses big time. Its like the flavors are fighting one another, no harmony. Finished the night with a little HP 12yr. Still one of the best SM out there.
unclebunk
Finished the night with a little HP 12yr. Still one of the best SM out there.I couldn't agree more. I did an "Orkney night" last night, with two pours of Scapa 14 before switching over to HP 12 and a pour of HP 18 for the grand finale. The Scapa and HP couldn't be more different but shouldn't really be compared with one another, as it would be like comparing apples to oranges. Scapa 14 lives up to the tasting notes on the bottle's label: smooth, sweet, heathery and honeyed, while the HP 12 has the peat and smoke in perfect balance. Both great but in entirely different ways.
