sob0728
Just got back from a scotch tasting, really enjoyed the Aberlour 10 and Bunnahabhain 12 and 25. The Ledaig 10, Deanston 12, Tobermory 10 and 15 and a few others were OK but nothing special, at least to me, I know everyone's tastes are different. I really did not like the Deanston 30, age does not always equal quality.

Tucker
Knappogue Castle 1995. Creamy, light, with just enough oak.
bad_scientist
Glen Moray at a party. Tastes just like Johnnie Walker Green, in case anyone was curious about it.

bad_scientist
What do you pay for it in your neck of the woods? Sounds good!My friend had it (he was so proud that his dad brought it back from Scotland, bless his heart), so I don't know what it goes for here, but Binny's has it for $30. It's pretty good for that price, I'd say. I think I'll get it to replace the Johnnie Walker Black that I have around for parties.
Clavius
Well I ran out of all my Islay single malts. And the only single malt I have remaining is a Glenlivet 16yr Nadurra. Ever since discovering the Islay single malts I've found most other non-Islay single malts to be merely "meh." I like this particular Glenlivet better than the 15yr French Oak, which I like better than the standard 12yr. But for me, as a scotch, I guess I just want that smoke and peat! Probably have to break down and buy another bottle of my favorite here soon, Laphroaig 10yr.

unclebunk
I decided that I could never fully appreciate the force without at least exploring the dark side so over the past few weeks picked up a few SMS's - thanks to the search function at SB - and I've been impressed. I won't be switching sides completely, but what impresses me are the wide variety of tastes available without the hunt that's sometimes involved with bourbon. I'm not going to go hog wild with purchases (honest) but now I can appreciate where you guys are coming from. A few thoughts...Balvenie Doublewood - first one purchased - I get lots of carmel, vanilla, and honey. Mild and smooth - great for after dinner. The dark side is seductive in this one.Speyburn 10 - mixed reviews on here but I found it to be a good basic SMS with some nice sweet notes at a very reasonable price. Not complex, but hey.Highland Park 12 - Lots to taste here - I can see having this in stock at all times. I understand the balanced comments - and I like the hints of smoke so I had to make one more purchase...Ardbeg Uigealail - Wow - I can smell the bandaids but it doesn't matter because I'm at a pig roast! The nose on this one even changed in the glass between the pour and the finish. Strong, complex, sweet, then spicy, smokey bbq. I can't wait to see how this one evolves as the bottle ages a bit - and my palate evolves. I like this one - a lot.So not a full fledged apprentice but I'm enjoying. Any other must-have suggestions are always appreciated.Rich

Brisko
After snaking out my kitchen drain tonight (semi sucessfully), Laphroaig 10 cask strength was the only option to get the stink out of my nostrils.
LikeItWasSodaPop
Just chiming in to say that I really enjoy this thread. It's been the one that's taught me the most about the Dark Side. I just wanted to thank the regular posters here. I should post more often re: my purchases and likes and dislikes. Will try to do so. That said, tonight Lagavulin Distillers Edition is doing battle against Bowmore 17. The Bowmore 17 was my first Scotch (relative) dusty (not sure how long this has been out of production, but not more than a few years, no?), and I still love it immensely. There's just an intense creamy, almost cream soda flavor to it. Invites certain comparisons to PVW in terms of body and sweetness. I realize how preposterous that statement is, but if you're by my bar, I can justify it! I've got a few stores where there are 5-6 bottles of this on the shelf and while I am dedicated to sweeping up bourbon dusties first, I do hope these Bowmore 17s wait for me. There's just something about the huge body and sweetness that makes it so uncharacteristic for an Islay, and what's reminding me of a wheated bourbon. That, or I'm drunk! DaveOfAtl
Lephroaig 10 and a Lagavulin 16 last night. I am just starting to "get" the Islays. Very good.
Parkersback
Ardbeg 10. Not as multi-layered and rich as Uguiedal, but still nice.I definitely prefer both to the Laphroaigs or Lagavullins I have tried.
Lost Pollito
Lagavulin 16 is one of those "Benchmark" malts for me. Just about perfect in every way. The Distillers edition from 2008 was my all time favorite Lagavulin. 16 year old Lagavulin perfectly finished in PX. Mingles the smoke and salt nicely with the rich px. I'm excited to pull the cork on it each and every time! Talisker is another killer and has, at times, been my favorite island-produced single malt. But let me also throw Caol Ila 12 into the mix. It is a quality malt that is often overlooked but worth every penny in my book. Perhaps not quite on the same level as Lagavulin and Talisker but pretty damned close. weller_tex
At the house right now, I have the new Bruichladdich, the Laddie 10. It is good, but I don't think it deserved the Whisky Advocate award. Plenty of 10-12 yr that are better. I have a wee bit of Talisker Distiller's Edition left (not as good as the 10 year but I wanted to try it..). I have AnCnoc 12 year that I have buyers remorse about...had it about 9 months and not even half a bottle gone. Finally I have a Cadenhead's Highland 100 proof that tastes as if it is young Highland Park. Very good on the rocks!
