ebo
Lag 16 really is a benchmark whisky and never fails to please. I'm excited to pull the cork on it each and every time! Talisker is another killer and has, at times, been my favorite island-produced single malt. But let me also throw Caol Ila 12 into the mix. It is a quality malt that is often overlooked but worth every penny in my book. Perhaps not quite on the same level as Lagavulin and Talisker but pretty damned close. Virus_Of_Life
I find that I tend to like the younger Islays (10 - 12 years) over the the older ones. The peat and smoke mellow with more aging. I guess I just really like the intense peat/smoke in the younger whiskies. So far, I am there with you. Which brings me to my drink for the night Octomore 1.1, damn, it is freaking phenomenal! I love this stuff. For something so peaty and intensely smokey it still has some fruit and cocoa characters in there. Well done.

DaveOfAtl
Ardmore is one of my go to drams. It would be hard to find a better whisky for the price.Totally agree. It has a beautiful combination of peat and bourbon-like vanilla and caramel. Hard to find for $35.

unclebunk
That is an insanely good price.Binny's has it for $30 which I thought was terrific until I stumbled upon this other place. The store owner swears that nobody buys it because they think it's a cheap knock-off of Ardbeg or something along those lines. (And at $20 I'm sure they think it's a McClellands-type product.) So, until the masses discover what I already know, the Ardmore Trad Cask will remain in abundant supply around here. Works for me!

dean_martin
After being out all day in the sun and wind yesterday, had two healthy pours of HP12 last night. I don't call on sms often but it hit the spot last night.
Bmac
I just got a bottle of Laphroaig 18yr for 67bux. I tried this at a tasting a few weeks ago and had my mind blown. They told me its aged in used Maker's Mark barrels. So it litterally has a whisper of wheat. No wonder i liked it (big fan of wheaters)

Brisko
Is there a scotch out there that has a tobacco finish to it?Do you mean tobacco smoke or cured tobacco? Some older versions of Talisker had a cigarette like finish. Otherwise look for peated distillate aged or finished in sherry. These tend to have notes of cured tobacco. Also older Springbanks (again, the sherried one) might fit that profile.

Bmac
Is there a scotch out there that has a tobacco finish to it? I not an expert, but I don't think a single malt would have that flavor profile. Bourbon is mostly Corn and rye/wheat with a tiny margin of malted barely for it's enzymes. My suspicion is that the corn and barrel char/oak equate to tobacco (again I could be wrong on that.) Now, with blended Scotch, anything goes if it uses an aged neutral grain whiskey. Also, it's possible that a faint hint of tobacco could be tasted in malts that are 20+ years of age (extracting the flavor from the used bourbon barrels). But you'd be investing in 200 - 1000 dollar bottles to get a flavor that 20 dollar bourbon can get you

JamesW
Mine sure wasn't free! (I'm sitting and eating Turkey with Cranberry Sauce etc.; and have just opened my first bottle of Eagle Rare. Tried it neat before the meal, and was not over impressed. Now, however, as I enjoy it neat with the food and a bottle of Cricketer's Arms Lager, the total effectis lovely.) To the point: As I eat, I am mentally opening my bottle - (No. 124 of 248) - of Aberfeldy Single Cask Highland Single Malt Whisky (Chris Anderson's Cask) 18 year old. AND then thinking, "No, you fool! Don't open it yet!!! AND abstaining. Has anyone here had some? In the words of Monty Python: "Wassit like?!!" Happy tippling all. I haven't had the pleasure... although I know the self-control of which you speak. I have a number of collectables that cry out for opening....I have to slap my wrist each time....

unclebunk
Caol Ila 12 last night. Always impressive and truly delicious. That's an Islay with perfect balance!
drunk
I had my first Redbreast last night and really enjoyed it. It was my first irish whiskey since falling in love with bourbon, but I might have to pick up the cask strength version at Binny's.
Clavius
Tasting Bowmore 12 neat at the moment. I swear it says Islay on the bottle but it sure doesn't taste much like an Islay single malt. Sort of smells like one I guess. Honestly though, this tastes more like a highland single malt to me. And to my unrefined palate all highland single malts taste the same. emil
Currently drinking:Aberlour 12 - Very good. Nice notes of heather and honey and only $34 in OH.Laphroig 10 CS Batch 002 - A bit fruitier than the regular 10, but just enough smoke and salt to know it's a Laphroig. Very nice stuff. Ardbeg 10 - My first Ardbeg and I love it. Picked up a bottle of the Ugiedal which I'll bunker for a while.
