unclebunk
I had a bottle of Cairdeas 2012 in October, sadly it didn't make it out of the month. I thought it was a real cracker of a whisky. Bright and friendly. Like a slightly less full throttle Uigeadail.Tonight I'm going to drink a Balvenie 15 Year Single Barrel.
ebo
Thanks for the info, gents. It's one I really should have pursued earlier that simply slipped under my radar for some reason. And sometimes young is good in an Islay. Gives it that extra something, right?
unclebunk
I prefer the Islays younger (10-12 years). The peat is more intense.... which is why I love Islay whisky to begin with.
ebo
I think I prefer the young ones too for the same reason. Once you start getting past 16 years old they tend to mellow out a bit, at least to my tastes. What are you enjoying tonight? I'm going with Ardbeg 10 and some Humble Pie. Marriott goes good with whisky, eh?

unclebunk
A friend kindly (and quite unexpectedly) brought over a new bottle of Powers 12 last night and we hit it pretty good, along with many bottles of Guinness Foreign Extra Stout and loads of great Irish music. A perfect evening!

A perfect evening! If the Powers John's Lane 12yo ever crosses the pond it sounds like you would like that. It is the backbone of the Powers 12 gold label in pure form! Might have to add a taste to my Thanksgiving plans now that I am thinking about it again!

HighInTheMtns
Dalmore 12. I've had this bottle open a long time and it's never really grabbed me, but it's a good simple pour that I always enjoy.

Brisko
I did a bit of a Gillmanization tonight. I bought a bottle of Black Bottle, and while flavorful, it is a little bright, so to speak. A little young and unbalanced. I combined the entire bottle with the following: about 3 oz of Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength, 2 oz of Springbank 10/100 proof, and 2 oz of Higland Park 12. The Lappy gives great definition to the Islay peat already present in the blend, Springbank gives some great "naked" barley spice, and HP lends a rounder, more slippery mouthfeel (but not much flavor). All in all a much more balanced and interesting dram, and a good way to use up some nearly empty bottles.

The flavors are settling down, putting it squarely in "good blend" territory, but the mouthfeel is wonderful. Round and creamy, very easy to drink. Trey Manthey
Last night I tried most of the recently released Distiller's Edition Diageo releases next to their standard expressions.Talisker - Preferred the regular expression. The sherry influence overpowered what I love about Talisker...that gentle peat.Oban - Preferred the DE. Enhanced nose over the regular expression, and a longer, sweeter finish. Went very well with the fattiness of the duck we were served.Lagavulin - Preferred the DE. Much more going on in the palate (spice and nutmeg) than the regular expression which to me is awesome peat/brine. Dalwhinnie - OK, by this time I was pretty well soused, so this was a toss-up. Both went well with the creamy dessert.
