For the Four Roses fanatics out there, Brett Pontoni at Binny's recently hand selected three casks of Four Roses Single Barrel. If you read the Cowdery Blog or Chuck's Examiner Column, you already knew that this juice was in the pipeline. I called his store about an order recently and during the conversation, I asked him how his spring trip to Kentucky went. He went in to the various selections that he made and he was most enthusiastic about the three different flavor profiles that he chose for FRSB.

Here's how Brett describes the different expressions:

Barrel #1 is really soft, fat, and sweet, very subtle. Probably the low rye mashbill with a sweeter yeast.

Barrel #2 is probably what folks would typically think as Four Roses, fat and sweet with that nice spicy rye back bone.

Barrel #3 is the rye/fruit monster, really spicy only barely restrained by some really nice fruit (cherry, etc.) character.

-------

I don't see them listed on Binny's site (yet), but I know that they are available to order by phone. I'm forming an order around a set of these as I type.

(Disclaimer: I don't work for Binny's, but I love good/unique whiskey like everyone else here)

I tend to favor, by a small margin, the Small Batch...I suppose the marrying of the above works out best for me overall...but the individual expressions would be great to try.

Cup selected? Reidel selected? Beaker selected?

Maybe it is like watching someone drink from a well pump with their hands cupped?

Funny...I still have one from each barrel in the bunker.

It would be a fun SBS after 7 years.

Very cool. I only bought bottles from barrels 2 and 3 at the time and regret not picking up barrel 1 but funds were quite limited so I went with the two that appealed most by your posted descriptions. I happened upon both bottles in the bunker this week and have been really enjoying barrel 2. Would either you or Joe have any idea which Four Roses recipe would most closely resemble barrels two and three? I honestly can't keep up with all the various FR bottlings and have yet to encounter one I don't like, so I simply buy them as the mood strikes without a lot of research as to which one is which. Thanks gents!
